SC internal reservation survey: Karnataka extends deadline to May 25
The deadline for Karnataka's ongoing survey aimed at collecting empirical data for internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SCs) has been extended. Retired Karnataka High Court judge H N Nagmohan Das, who heads the commission conducting the exercise, announced the extension.
The data collection process, which began on May 5, was originally set to conclude on May 17. It will now continue until May 25, news agency PTI reported.
For those left out during the door-to-door survey, camps will be held from May 26 to 28 for registration. Additionally, a self-declaration facility will be made available online from May 19 to 28.

Addressing the media, Justice Das said, 'There were certain technical problems, we were able to overcome them. The survey is smoothly going on and the progress is more than our expectation. Within the extended time today that we have given, I'm confident we will cover a hundred per cent survey.'
He added that the commission has already covered 72 per cent of the targeted households. While they were confident of hitting 90 per cent by the earlier deadline, several organisations and community leaders requested an extension. 'Considering all factors, we have taken this decision to extend,' he said.
Karnataka has around 25.72 lakh SC households. On the challenges faced, Justice Das explained that some SC households were reluctant to reveal their caste identities. Others who have certificates under categories like Adi Karnataka and Adi Dravida either do not know their original caste or find their sub-caste missing from the official list. Some, even when aware, were unwilling to disclose it, he said.
Justice Das noted that the Centre had asked for details about the electronic method used for the survey and that the commission had shared the information. 'We have done a unique job, and nowhere in the country this method is adopted as of now, as per my information,' he said.
He also clarified that his interim report had recommended a fresh survey, as the existing data was insufficient for a scientific classification. The Karnataka government accepted this recommendation and ordered a fresh round of data collection.
The cabinet had taken this decision on March 27. The move comes amid longstanding demands from sections within the SCs—especially those identified as 'SC Left'—who allege that only a few dominant sub-castes have been cornering most benefits while others remain marginalised.
The internal reservation policy seeks to redistribute the existing 17 per cent SC quota among the 101 scheduled castes in the state. In November last year, the state government appointed Justice Nagmohan Das to lead a commission to recommend a framework for this internal classification.
This came after a Supreme Court ruling on August 1 last year allowed states to create sub-classifications within SCs, recognising their social heterogeneity and enabling equitable distribution of reservation benefits to more marginalised communities.

UP CM directs officials to take action against fake, shell companies
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to take action against shell companies to stop the attempts to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders. While conducting a high-level review of the State Tax Department, the CM directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. "Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes," he said. Stressing that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density are naturally expected to generate more tax revenue. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Adityanath directed that information on suspicious firms registered under Central GST (CGST) be shared with the Centre for cancellation of their registration. For firms under State GST (SGST), he ordered in-depth departmental investigations, and if irregularities are found, their registration should be canceled and FIRs lodged. The CM emphasised the need for on-site inspection of all newly registered firms, stating "fake companies should not be allowed to obstruct the rights of honest taxpayers. CM Adityanath said that such acts are an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders, which is unforgivable. Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference," he said. During the meeting, officials informed the CM that Rs 18,161.59 crore in GST and VAT had been collected during April and May against the financial year 2025-26 target of Rs 1,75,725 crore.

Maharashtra has big dams, but we face water imbalance: CM
Nagpur: Maharashtra's deep regional water disparities persist despite hosting some of India's largest irrigation projects, said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Vidarbha Pani Parishad. "Big dams alone can't resolve the issue. The real solution lies in small, sustainable conservation structures," he stated, advocating for localised water planning. He highlighted the success of Jalyukt Shivar under the Baliraja Project, which ensured convergence of departments under district collectors, boosting participation and impact. Fadnavis also backed the Centre's move to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, calling it the "deadliest blow" to Pakistan and a precursor to "Operation Sindoor." He warned that water wars are no longer distant possibilities, urging wise use and conservation amid mounting national and global water stress. "Water has been at the heart of civilisations — from the Saraswati to Sindhu to African rivers," said Fadnavis, adding that in modern times, unchecked use, especially in agriculture, has become a major concern. "Whenever water availability rises, we shift to cash crops and overuse it. We must act wisely in usage and conservation." Speakaing about Jalyukt Shivar, he said, "Unlike earlier fragmented schemes split across 14 departments, this one was coordinated under district collectors. All officials, irrespective of departments, reported directly to the collector. This streamlined planning, execution, and participation." With Rs700 crore raised through public contribution, the scheme benefited over 20,000 villages, notably in Marathwada, improving groundwater levels. A 2018 HC petition led to an expert panel, which verified the scheme's success. In 2020, the Centre's Groundwater Report confirmed Maharashtra as the only state with consecutive annual water level rises. "Even with just 75% rainfall, we faced no scarcity," he said. Among key projects, Fadnavis cited the Wainganga-Nalganga river-linking initiative — a 500km project spanning seven districts in Vidarbha — aimed at redirecting surplus water toward the Godavari basin. Similar efforts include five other river-linking schemes and the Tapi Water Recharge Project, set to shift 35 TMC water to saline-affected areas. Since 2014, the state has completed 90 irrigation projects, including the near-completion Gosikhurd Dam. Post-2017, it has shifted to piped distribution systems, saving 8 TMC of water and boosting efficiency. Fadnavis also praised Israel's water practices, such as micronutrient delivery and precision irrigation, as models being adopted in Maharashtra. He flagged river and nullah pollution, attributing 90% of it to untreated domestic waste. "Industries get blamed, but citizens are major contributors," he said, urging better sewage systems in cities like Nagpur, Pune, and Mumbai. Warning of rising inter-district water conflicts like Nashik vs Marathwada, Fadnavis stressed that solutions, not demands, are the way forward. Earlier, Nagpur University's acting vice-chancellor Madhavi Khode Chaware inaugurated the Wainganga Water Exhibition at Vanamati. Over 150 students, scholars, and activists participated, showcasing posters, research papers, and models focused on water conservation and sustainability. KMC 2nd inspection of La Martiniere today
Kolkata: A KMC team, following directions from the Calcutta High Court, will conduct an inspection of the heritage buildings at the twin La Martiniere schools on Sunday. This is HC's second inspection directive to the KMC. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The earlier civic team that had inspected the school on June 2 comprised two KMC executive engineers, a representative of the West Bengal Heritage Commission and a representative from the three petitioners. During the hearing on Thursday, the West Bengal Heritage Commission, in its report, said repairs were required in the schools and the KMC needed to grant permission for it. The counsel for the KMC, Alak Ghosh, submitted before the vacation bench of Justice Ravi Krishan Kapur and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya that the school authorities already demolished what constituted the dignity of the heritage structure set up way back in 1832. The building appears in the KMC Heritage Building List as a Grade I heritage structure. But the KMC counsel admitted it conducted inspections in a "few selected rooms and not the entirety of the buildings". Chastising the KMC for its "casual and cavalier attitude", the vacation bench directed the civic authorities to conduct a further investigation of the damage at the heritage buildings and ascertain the urgency of the repairs. The bench directed the KMC to reach La Martiniere School for further inspection between noon and 3 pm on Sunday. While the matter will be taken up by the regular bench on June 10, the vacation bench reiterated "if the urgency of the situation so requires, the KMC and the heritage commission shall take necessary steps in accordance with law and won't wait for any order of court".
