Kenyir green energy projects poised to attract global investment

KUALA BERANG: The newly launched Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and Green Hydrogen Hub projects in Terengganu have the potential to attract regional and international investors, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the new alternative energy initiative, a clean and green collaboration between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), is aligned with both Malaysia's energy policy and international aspirations for green energy.
"Kenyir is now becoming a focal point of interest for international investors. This is not just a boost for Terengganu, but Kenyir itself will become a major attraction. The project has also been implemented efficiently and swiftly," he said at the launch ceremony of the ventures at the Sultan Mahmud Power Station in Kenyir today.
Also present were Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar; TNB chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid and Petronas chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh.
The HHFS and Green Hydrogen Hub aim to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the green hydrogen value chain, while supporting the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR).

TNB's AI-powered Maintenance Project Wins ASEAN Innovation Award

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's leading electricity utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), has received the ASEAN Innovation Business Platform (AIBP) Enterprise Innovation Award 2025 in the Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) category for its groundbreaking AI-powered predictive maintenance initiative. AIBP, in a statement, said TNB received the award at the 49th AIBP Conference here last Wednesday, noting that the event is widely recognised as a regional benchmark for digital transformation, honouring organisations that deliver innovative, scalable, and high-impact solutions across ASEAN. "TNB's AI-powered predictive maintenance initiative transforms management of its extensive 11kV underground cable network, traditionally affected by numerous breakdowns annually. "Successfully piloted in Selangor with over 80 per cent accuracy in predicting failures up to two years in advance, the project reduces cable failures by 15–20 per cent, significantly enhancing customer service reliability," read the statement. Senior leaders in asset management and analytics represented TNB at the ceremony, alongside prominent industry figures, including CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab, National AI Office CEO Shamsul Majid, and AIBP CEO Irza Fauzan Suprapto. It said that there were over 100 nominated projects from both private and government-linked corporations in that category. Other finalists included major regional players such as Petronas, Genting, AirAsia, Sime Darby, and Allianz, highlighting the project's regional competitiveness and innovation strength. It added that the winning project underwent a rigorous evaluation process conducted by an independent panel of experts spanning digital government, economic policy, enterprise technology, and global innovation sectors. "Final presentations were held in May, with judging criteria focusing on impact, scalability, innovation, and value creation.

Malakoff inks MoU with EESB to develop green power projects in Sarawak

KUCHING: Independent power producer Malakoff Corp Bhd today formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with real estate and construction group Evergreen Earth Sdn Bhd (EESB) to develop Sarawak's green power projects. The MoU exchange ceremony was held in conjunction with International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. It was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. The MoU was exchanged between Malakoff's business development head, Shaja Ibrahim, and EESB director, Datuk Mohamad Danel Abong. In a joint statement, Malakoff and EESB said the collaboration covers feasibility studies, site assessments, project development strategies and local partnership models related to solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewable energy (RE) ventures. "The collaboration will also encompass the sharing of technical expertise, regulatory insights and market intelligence, as well as coordinated efforts to engage with relevant authorities and stakeholders to secure necessary approvals and grid integration. "These joint efforts are aligned with Sarawak's Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 and Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), supporting the country's long-term sustainability and clean energy goals," said the statement. Malakoff managing director and chief executive officer Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib said green power projects represent a significant step towards accelerating Malaysia's energy transition. "By supporting Sarawak's efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and diversify its renewable energy mix, we are contributing to the development of a more sustainable and future-ready energy ecosystem. "These projects are expected to deliver strong economic value through job creation, upskilling of local talent and the development of rural infrastructure. This partnership builds on Malakoff's broader RE progress, which includes a total generating capacity of 198 megawatt (MW) across solar, waste-to-energy and small hydropower assets," he said. Anwar Syahrin also said that as of June this year, Malakoff's rooftop solar capacity reached 63.6 MW, while in 2024, its RE portfolio generated 67.0 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity.
