MSRTC to deliver bus travel passes to students at educational institutions from June 16
'Students will get ST passes directly at their schools,' said Sarnaik, announcing the 'ST Pass Directly to Your School' campaign starting June 16. He said the government currently offers a 66.66 per cent concession on ST bus fares for students travelling between home and educational institutions.
Under this scheme, students only have to pay 33.33 per cent of the fare to receive a monthly ST pass. In addition, all students up to class 12 are provided free passes under the 'Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar' scheme, aimed at promoting uninterrupted education, the MSRTC chairman stated.
'Until now, students had to go to ST pass centres or depots, often in groups, and stand in long lines to collect their passes. This would lead to a waste of academic hours. With this new approach, ST employees will visit schools and colleges and distribute the passes directly, based on the student list provided by the institutions,' the minister said, adding that this innovative step will benefit lakhs of students across Maharashtra.

Thane: State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Wednesday announced plans to launch the pod taxi project in Thane city, describing it as an environmentally friendly and economical transportation system that would complement the city's Metro network. Speaking at a development review meeting at the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) auditorium, Sarnaik said the groundbreaking ceremony for the project would be conducted after completing legal formalities. The proposed pod taxi network will span 52km with an estimated 63 stations. The fare structure has been kept affordable at Rs 30 per person per stage. "Legal approvals for passenger safety, financial viability assessment, and other formalities need to be completed before launching the project on PPP basis," Sarnaik said. "Such announcements seem to be mere eyewash," said a local activist, pointing out that Thane city is still grappling with basic infrastructure issues like poor roads, flooding, water issues, and traffic chaos. "These kinds of promises are usually made only before elections, but little changes on the ground," the activist claimed. Another resident questioned, "Where will they accommodate pod taxis when we have Metro and Ring Rail coming up?" During the review meeting, Sarnaik also announced a ban on heavy commercial vehicles on Ghodbunder Road from 6am to midnight to reduce traffic congestion on the busy arterial route. He suggested diverting cargo traffic through the Bhiwandi route, which would provide relief to commuters using the Ghodbunder corridor. The minister also recommended maximising tree plantation while developing the Nanglabunder creek area to expand Thane's forest cover, and setting up a rehabilitation centre for stray dogs outside the city limits to help manage the growing canine population across various localities. Sarnaik was reviewing the progress of various development projects in Thane city in the presence of TMC commissioner Saurabh Rao and other officials. He announced that development works worth Rs 1,800 crore were sanctioned for TMC under the guidance of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, who was chief minister when the funds were approved. "Most of these development projects are progressing well, and Shinde expressed his intention to inaugurate the majority of works by Oct 15," Sarnaik said. He directed officials and staff to work round the clock to complete the remaining projects. Sarnaik also instructed that service roads along Ghodbunder Road be linked with the main carriageway by Dec 31, by cement concretising the open spaces in the middle of the road. The minister also announced that Thane's third theatre would be constructed in the Ghodbunder area. Thane already houses Gadkari Rangayatan and Dr Kashinath Ghanekar auditoriums. At the review meeting, Sarnaik also assessed the progress of several ongoing projects, including the mangrove park at Mogharwada, beautification of the lake at Kasarwadavli, renovation of old gardens, and scientific revival of wells in Thane city. Train delays, cancellations inconvenience passengers
Pune: Passengers were inconvenienced because of train unavailability and major delays on Tuesday night and Wednesday because the heavy rain led to cancellation and rescheduling of a number of trains, including the ones operating between Pune and Mumbai, even though rail tracks had cleared up by Tuesday evening. City resident Manideep Mittal was returning to Pune from Ratlam on the Jaipur-Pune Superfast Express. He said he didn't know his trip would become a torture. "I boarded the train at 7.45 pm on Tuesday and we were supposed to reach Pune at 8.05 am on Wednesday. I was to join office after reaching home. The train reached Surat around 1 am and was rescheduled because of heavy rain in Mumbai. We were not informed through any medium. The train stood near Jalgaon from 7 am to 11 am on Wednesday," he said. Till the time of going to press, Mittal was still stranded and told TOI: "We have no idea when we will reach Pune." Harindar Singh was onboard the Amritsar Express which started 10 hours late from CSMT. He hoped the train would recover on lost time. "There are around 130 buses, including E-Shivneri buses, which operate between Pune and Mumbai daily. The passenger load in the buses is less than 40% on Wednesdays. Buses could have been increased but not too many people were travelling to Mumbai for fear of getting stuck. The same was for routes to Solapur and Kolhapur. The passenger traffic in each of the buses was around 50%," an official told TOI. Gautam Sable, a working professional, said he had to skip work. "I work in Navi Mumbai and often take a bus. However, I have had to skip work for two days now. I don't want to take any risk and then suffer," he said. In Pune city, compared to Monday, breakdown of PMPML buses increased on Tuesday. Kishore Chauhan, the PRO, said, "On Tuesday, 80 buses broke down because of the rain." On Monday, 69 buses suffered breakdowns. The actual trips on Wednesday were 19,255 compared to the planned 21,271. Kalyaninagar resident Nimish Sathe said, "Surprisingly, my bus came on time on Wednesday, maybe because of little traffic on the streets. " Divisional commercial manager and PRO of the Pune rail division Hemant Kumar Behera said train operations had returned to normal. "The Up line from Pune to Mumbai became fully operational around 9.15pm on Tuesday and the Down line became operational by 10.23pm. All intercity trains are to resume services from Thursday. We will update if there are any fresh development," he told TOI. Another railway official said that even with the lines becoming operational, things took a lot of time with many trains remaining stuck. "The lines were opened to rail traffic and trains have started to move slowly. The process is time taking and needs proper planning and execution," he added. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, the Central Railway limped back to normalcy on Wednesday after heavy rainfall late on Tuesday night. Mansi Gaud, heading to Shivajinagar from Fatimanagar, waited an hour for a PMPML bus, only to give up and take an autorickshaw amid rain. "PMPML buses are usually late, but today (Tuesday) was unbearable. Hopefully, one day they'll run on schedule," she said. A student of a Wagholi-based engineering college had a nightmarish ride on a PMPML e-bus, which was leaking profusely. "The maintenance is questionable. I couldn't even sit in the bus (number 167)," he said, describing his unpleasant journey from Bhekrainagar to Wagholi. PMPML PRO Kishore Chauhan confirmed 69 bus breakdowns on Monday.
