Can gold retain its glitter as Dalal Street gets back its glow?
Gold prices, which recently touched an all-time high of Rs 1 lakh, have started to come down as global conditions improve and stock markets recover. This shift has reduced the demand for gold as a safe investment, with investors now turning their attention back to equities.Just a week ago, gold was trading at record levels due to global uncertainty. Concerns over trade tensions, US tariffs, and geopolitical issues had pushed investors towards gold, a common choice during uncertain times. But now, things are changing. At the same time, stock markets have shown strong performance. The Sensex has crossed the 80,000 mark, and the Nifty has posted its best level in 2025 so far. As a result, investor confidence in equities has returned, lowering the appeal of gold.GOLD TO RETAIN ITS GLITTER?Trivesh, Chief Operating Officer of Tradejini, said that gold and stocks serve different purposes in an investment plan.'Gold has gone up by over 30% since Akshaya Tritiya 2024 and over 200% in the last ten years. The rise was mainly due to global market troubles, trade restrictions, and rising oil prices. In India, gold is not just an investment—it has cultural value and is seen as a sign of prosperity and security during festivals and family events.'He added that while gold had a strong rally, some correction is natural as global tensions ease. Still, gold remains a popular choice for protecting capital and reducing risk during uncertain times. On the other hand, equities provide growth. 'The Nifty 50 has bounced back by 12% from its April low. But now, market expectations are high. If company earnings do not meet these expectations, there could be a correction,' said Trivesh. He advised a balanced investment strategy. 'Gold protects you from market ups and downs. Equities help your money grow over time. Choosing the right mix depends on how much risk you can take and what your financial goals are.'advertisementWHY ARE GOLD PRICES FALLING?The recent fall in gold prices is mainly because of better global trade conditions.US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said that several major trading partners, including India, had come forward with strong proposals to avoid US tariffs. He added that a trade deal with India might be signed soon.
China has also decided to remove tariffs on some US goods, which is seen as a move to reduce tensions. At the same time, the US has said it will ease the impact of auto tariffs. These steps are expected to improve trade relations between large economies.Jateen Trivedi, Vice President and Research Analyst for Commodities and Currency at LKP Securities, said, 'The fall in gold demand came as the US began tariff talks with many countries. Hopes for a China-US trade deal and possible peace between Russia and Ukraine have also reduced the need for gold as a safe option.'advertisementHe explained that when global tensions fall, investors tend to move their money away from safe options like gold and into other investments that might offer better returns. This shift has pulled down gold prices both globally and in India. At one point, gold had climbed to $3,500.05 per ounce due to fears of a global slowdown and market uncertainty.MARKET OUTLOOK FOR GOLDRahul Kalantri, Vice President of Commodities at Mehta Equities, said gold prices dipped early Monday due to low demand in China. However, they recovered slightly later in the day due to global risk worries and some profit-taking in the US dollar. He said that recent border tensions between India and Pakistan, and attacks in Iran, briefly pushed gold prices up again. But the rise didn't last long.Kalantri shared current levels for gold and silver. He said gold has support at $3,310–$3,288 and resistance at $3,360–$3,378. In India, this means gold has support at Rs 95,450–Rs 95,080 and resistance at Rs 96,750–Rs 97,290. Silver is also facing pressure, with support at Rs 95,680–Rs 94,850 and resistance at Rs 97,150–Rs 97,950.Dr. Renisha Chainani, Head of Research at Augmont, said that gold prices could rise again if a new global issue appears. She said that if gold moves above $3,380 (about Rs 96,400), it could go up to $3,435 (around Rs 97,400), and possibly reach $3,500 again (about Rs 99,400).advertisement(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group. Drishti IAS to continue independently 'for now', after considering Physics Wallah deal, funding via IPO
'At Drishti IAS, our decisions are always based on a long-term vision. Though we explored various funding options during last year, including Initial Public Offering (IPO) and discussions with a few strategic investors including Physics Wallah, we have decided to continue independently for now. We hope we'll keep doing better on our own, and if required, we'll explore other options as per circumstances in the future,' Drishti IAS CEO Vivek Tiwari told ThePrint. The institute said it will continue to run independently, as it has for several years. New Delhi: A few months ago, reports suggested that unicorn Physics Wallah was in talks to acquire Drishti IAS, which is among the oldest coaching institutes for civil services preparations. While they were dismissed as mere speculations, the IAS coaching institute has now said it was indeed exploring funding options last year, including through Physics Wallah, but ultimately decided not to go ahead with it. Four major coaching institutes—Drishti IAS, Chaitanya Academy, Rau's IAS Study Circle, and Sarathi IAS—were being considered for potential acquisition as part of a larger consolidation wave in the Indian EdTech and test prep market. With online-first players like Physics Wallah and Unacademy looking to strengthen their offline footprint and diversify into civil services coaching, talks with these legacy UPSC institutes had emerged as strategic opportunities to tap into a loyal student base, particularly in Hindi-medium and regional markets. Drishti IAS was founded in 1999 by popular teacher Vikas Divyakirti in Mukherjee Nagar. It became one of the most well-known institutes for Hindi-medium UPSC aspirants. The Delhi-based institute reported a revenue of Rs 405 crore and a profit after tax of Rs 90 crore in FY24. Vikas Divyakirti's popularity is such that he even appeared in the movie 12th fail, Videos of his classes and lectures receive millions of views on social media. The institute moved to Noida last year after infrastructure issues in Mukherjee Nagar were flagged, following the death of three UPSC aspirants in another institute in the Old Rajinder Nagar area, and fire incidents at other institutes in Mukherjee Nagar. Coaching institutes came under intense scrutiny by public and authorities for infrastructure lapses and licensing issues after these incidents. Sources at Drishti IAS said the institute remains profitable. Physics Wallah is known for offering affordable online coaching. It first gained popularity through YouTube and later launched online courses for JEE and NEET aspirants for admission in engineering and medical courses. But over the last few years, it has been expanding its offerings. It entered the UPSC coaching space after joining forces with OnlyIAS in 2022. The potential acquisition of Drishti IAS was seen as a strategic move to bolster Physics Wallah's offline presence and diversify its portfolio ahead of its planned IPO. Dalal Street Week Ahead: Nifty near breakout as resistance seen at 25,100; PSU banks, energy lead sectoral momentum
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel After consolidating for two weeks, the Nifty finally appeared to be flexing its muscles for a potential move higher. Over the past five sessions, the Nifty traded with an underlying positive bias and ended near the week's high point while also attempting to move past a crucial pattern of resistance. The past week saw the Index oscillating in the 527-point range, which was in line with the previous weeks. The volatility also cooled off; the India VIX came off by 9% to 14.63 on a weekly basis. While staying largely in a range trading with a positive bias, the headline Index closed with a net weekly gain of 252.35 points (+1.02%).Over the past couple of weeks, the Nifty has traded in a well-defined range created between 24,500-25,100 levels. This would mean that the markets would remain devoid of directional bias unless they take out 25,100 on the higher side or violate the 24,500 level. Despite visibly strong undercurrents, staying reactive to the markets rather than getting predictive would be prudent. Although there are heightened possibilities of the Nifty taking out the 25,100 level, we must consider it as resistance until it is taken out coming week is set to see a stable start; the levels of 25150 and 25400 are likely to act as resistance points. The supports come in at 24,800 and 24500. The trading range is expected to get wider than weekly RSI is 60.94; it continues to remain neutral and does not show any divergence against the price. The weekly MACD is bullish and remains above its signal line. A strong white candle emerged; this shows the bullish trend that the markets had during the week.A pattern analysis of the weekly chart shows that the Nifty resisted the upward rising trendline that began from the low of 21,350 and joined the subsequent rising bottoms. The Nifty has attempted to penetrate it after resisting it for a couple of the coming week may see the markets trading with an underlying bullish bias. However, for this to culminate in a good trending move, the Index will have to take out the 25,100-25,150 zone convincingly on the upside. Until this happens, the markets may continue to consolidate in a broad trading range. Unless there is a strong move that surpasses the 25,100-25,150 zone, one must consider this level as an immediate resistance point. Some pockets have run up too hard over the past few days; one must also focus on protecting gains at current levels rather than chasing the up moves. Fresh purchases must be kept limited in stocks with strong technical setups and the presence of relative strength. A cautiously positive approach is advised for the coming Rotation Graphs (RRG) show that the Nifty PSU Bank Index continues to build on its relative momentum while staying inside the leading quadrant. It may continue outperforming the markets relatively. The Infrastructure, Consumption, and PSE Index are also inside the leading quadrant but are seen giving up on their relative Nifty Bank Index has rolled inside the weakening quadrant. The Nifty Services Sector, Financial Services, and Commodity Indice are also inside the weakening quadrant.
