Why value investing has worked better outside the US

I recently interviewed investor and author Daniel Rasmussen for The Long View podcast, where he commented that 'value hasn't worked in the U.S., but it's worked fine internationally.'
I was intrigued by this observation. So, I looked at Morningstar's indexes. Sure enough, value investing has prospered beyond American shores—this year, as well as over the past three-, five-, and 10-year periods.
'Magnificent Seven' vs. 'Granolas'
US stocks of all styles have beaten international stocks for years, due to a strengthening dollar, superior returns on invested capital, and expanding price multiples.
Morningstar's US growth index is dominated by the ' Magnificent Seven.' But internationally, the scale is far smaller. There is not a single public company outside the US currently worth $1 trillion.
There was a time when the ' Granolas ' stocks were being promoted as Europe's answer to the Magnificent Seven (names like GSK, Roche, Nestle, L'Oreal and AstraZeneca). But don't blame yourself if you haven't heard of the Granolas. They never really rivaled the Magnificent Seven from a performance perspective.
So, what has boosted value investing internationally? Largely, the financial-services sector (which was lifted by higher interest rates) and energy stocks.
Looking beyond Europe with style
While value has outperformed growth in Europe over the past five years, Europe now represents less than half of equity market capitalization outside the US.
Rather, value stocks in emerging markets (like China, India, and Brazil) and developed Asia have outperformed by an even larger margin than in Europe.
The decline of Chinese internet companies, which were once big growth stocks, helps explain why value investing has triumphed over growth investing in emerging markets in recent years.
On the developed-markets side, Japan has seen rising interest rates and improved economic and investment conditions disproportionately benefit financial-services stocks, which tend to reside on the value side of the market.
Value's underperformance in the US: Is it macro or micro?
While I have mentioned some macroeconomic factors above, I am generally skeptical of attempts to explain style leadership from the top down. Back in 2022, when sticky inflation prompted the largest interest-rate hikes in a generation, US growth stocks fell much further than value. A popular narrative arose: Growth stocks are more sensitive to interest rates.
But then growth bounced back in 2023 despite high rates. The Magnificent Seven and others rode a wave of enthusiasm for AI. Growth stocks' thriving amid higher rates is hardly unprecedented. Between 2015 and 2018, the US Federal Reserve hiked rates several times, yet growth beat value by a wide margin.
Ultimately, I agree with Rasmussen that the triumph of growth over value in the US has more to do with 'historically unique and rare circumstances.'
I've been following markets long enough to know that style leadership can be cyclical. Right now, it's value investing that's being fundamentally questioned.
Value stocks have been called 'structurally challenged,' in 'secular decline,' and 'value traps.' But the value side of the market has always been home to troubled companies. Value investing is about stocks that under promise and overdeliver.
Perhaps the long-term cycle will turn again in value's favor. AI could be revolutionary, but, like the internet, ahead of itself from an investment perspective. We could look back at 2025 as a historical inflection point, as marking a new market regime.
The problem is that these things are only clear in retrospect. It will take time to know if the rotations we've seen in early 2025 will last, or if they're just head fakes.

Some of Vegas' iconic casinos, convention centers and hotels -- and thousands of households across the city, too -- are using the sun to save money and better the planet's odds at tackling climate change. Today in Nevada, about one-third of all energy demand is met by solar panels. The state has the highest solar electricity generation per capita in the country, as well as the most solar-industry jobs per capita. It comes down to cost. Take the Strip. It uses more electricity than 300,000 households, which is more than the rest of Las Vegas combined. Advertisement The state's biggest employer, MGM Resorts International, which has 11 properties on the Strip, is betting on solar. 'It gave us control of what we're going to pay for energy over the next few decades,' said Henry Shields, MGM's vice president for research and analytics. Enter Email Sign Up MGM installed 26,000 panels on the roof of Mandalay Bay, an enormous casino and convention center at the Strip's southern end. Then, northeast of the city near a place called Dry Lake, on a valley slope tilted toward the rising sun and dotted with sagebrush and red barrel cacti, MGM teamed up with a clean energy company to build an array of 322,000 panels. The panels now provide 90% of MGM's daytime power. Advertisement And the company is investing in a similar facility, coupled with large batteries for storage, that will power things into the evening. 'For a long time, the hospitality industry wanted to make power consumption invisible -- like, just come here and forget about that kind of thing,' said Michael Gulich, MGM's sustainability executive. 'Now we advertise it.' In 2019, Nevada pledged to produce half of its electricity from renewables by 2030. That goal is enshrined in its state constitution. Solar energy companies have flocked to the state. On a surface level, it's easy to see why: 97% of annual daylight hours in and around Las Vegas are unblemished by clouds. Off the Strip, away from guys dancing in gorilla costumes, gals in American-flag bikinis and the tipsy tourists stumbling around in Tommy Bahama shirts, is a much quieter city. And it is one where scarcity, not excess, is front of mind. Water use is strictly policed. Lawns are banned. Southern Nevada has a water patrol that drives around ticketing those who violate conservation rules. 'People here saw the writing on the wall years ago,' said Lauren Boitel, who directs ImpactNV, a sustainability nonprofit founded by the state and former casino executives. 'I've been here 35 years,' she said. 'We've decreased the water we use per capita by half, even as the population has doubled. We're world leaders even if Vegas usually gets dinged for this perception of waste.' That other Vegas, an expanse of strip malls and gated communities spread across an enormous arid plain, is also home to the greatest concentration of residential rooftop solar in the continental United States. State and federal tax credits help. The city makes it easy, too. 'You're pretty much in and out of our office with a permit in 30 minutes,' said Marco Velotta, the city's chief sustainability officer. Advertisement The demand for rooftop solar comes from all kinds of people, local installation companies said. At the corner of Man O War Street and Real Quiet Drive, in a subdivision called Lamplight Estates, one man named Dave, who was decked out in a National Rifle Association hat and shirt, said his decision to install solar came down to cost. 'People just want to be efficient, you know,' he said. He declined to give his full name. Autumn Hood - who called herself a real believer in sustainability - made a similar point. Rooftop panels have saved her money and made her feel more independent. But any climate concerns were secondary. Both said they could pay off their investment through savings on electric bills in less than 10 years. At the level of a single household, rooftop solar offsets only a tiny amount of greenhouse gas emissions. If many people do it, however, all of those individual choices can make an entire grid less fossil-fuel dependent. 'When we all do it, and when industry does it, it's a different story,' Hood said. Elon's going all-in on AI, with his xAI project now seeking to compete with Meta, OpenAI, Google and others, by providing similar generative AI features and tools, hosted within both X itself and the separate Grok AI app. The next big element incoming is xAI's new image and video generation option, which it's calling 'Imagine.' And according to a new splash screen in the Grok app, that's coming very soon. As you can see in this screenshot (posted by Jonah Manzano), xAI is now informing Grok users that they can join the waitlist for 'the fastest image and video generation experience.' I mean, I'm not sure that people really want to fastest tool on this front necessarily, but preferably the best tool for translating their text prompts into actual images and video. Though Elon's confident on that front as well, posting a 6-second video example from xAI's current generation model: Elon's so confident that people will like his new 'Imagine' option, that he's even claimed that X will effectively bring back Vine in AI form via a coming influx of AI-generated clips. Which could be interesting, I guess, but it's not really the return of Vine so much as an introduction of another text-to-video AI tool. Which, functionally, won't be new, given that Google Veo offers the same, while OpenAI, Meta and TikTok are all also developing their own text-to-video models. But still, Elon's always keen to proclaim his version as the best, and the leader of the pack. And right now at least, he could have some claim to that, given the amount of processing power that xAI has seemingly been able to activate via its Colossus data center. According to Musk, xAI is now operating 230k Nvidia H100 GPUs at its various facilities, powering the latest Grok models. Nvidia's chips have become a key component for AI development, and the more you have, the better the performance of your AI systems. For comparison, Meta reportedly has around 350,000 Nvidia H100 chips, though not all are available for Meta AI processing, while OpenAI has around 200k in operation. So right now at least, xAI could indeed have the most powerful AI models in operation, though it seems unlikely that this will remain the case, given that Meta has more capacity, and is developing its own AI chips to expand its systems even further. Though Musk's other business, Tesla, has also signed a new deal with Samsung to develop custom chips, which could eventually see Musk working towards his own variation of the same. Though even then, it still seems like xAI is going to struggle to compete in the wider market, considering the early mover advantages gained by OpenAI, and the near limitless capacity of Meta. I had assumed that Musk's ties with the U.S. government, through his friendship with President Trump, would be the key play on this front, with xAI able to build custom AI systems that align with the requirements of U.S. government customers. But then Musk turned on Trump, and Trump has since threatened to cut all government contracts with Musk's companies. So that, seemingly, has burned that bridge. But then again, xAI did ink a $200 million contract with the Pentagon just two weeks ago, which will see the company provide AI tools to the Defense Department. So maybe all the Elon vs Trump stuff is being overblown, and Musk will still be able to capitalize on his involvement with the government in order to benefit his companies. Without that, however, I don't see why companies would be lining up to do business with xAI, given its various controversies around misinformation, and alignment with Elon's own opinions. Yet, Elon clearly sees this as a key opportunity, and he's now pushing hard to make xAI into a bigger project, and capitalize on the broader AI hype. If that works out, then Elon could be on another big money winner, which will keep the cash flowing into X, Tesla robotics, and more, as he pushes to lead the next tech stage. But as with all of Musk's projects, a lot has to go right for this to work out. The approach seems to be working for him so far, but it always feels like it's barely being held together by Elon's irrational confidence. You can view more examples of Imagine clips here. Anthropic cuts off OpenAI's access to its Claude models

Anthropic has revoked OpenAI's access to its Claude family of AI models, according to a report in Wired. Sources told Wired that OpenAI was connecting Claude to internal tools that allowed the company to compare Claude's performance to its own models in categories like coding, writing, and safety. TechCrunch has reached out to Anthropic and OpenAI for comment. In a statement to Wired, an Anthropic spokesperson said, 'OpenAI's own technical staff were also using our coding tools ahead of the launch of GPT-5,' which is apparently 'a direct violation of our terms of service.' (Anthropic's commercial terms forbid companies from using Claude to build competing services.) However, Anthropic also said it would continue to give OpenAI access for 'benchmarking and safety evaluations.' Meanwhile, an OpenAI spokesperson said, 'While we respect Anthropic's decision to cut off our API access, it's disappointing considering our API remains available to them.' Anthropic executives had already shown resistance to providing access to competitors, with Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan previously justifying the company's decision to cut off Windsurf (a rumored OpenAI acquisition target, subsequently acquired by Cognition) by saying, 'I think it would be odd for us to be selling Claude to OpenAI.'
