Fears of wild monkey attacks grip Lahad Datu folks

LAHAD DATU: The villagers in Pulau Sakar expressed concern following the presence of wild monkeys (Beruk) that attacked villagers and intruded their houses. The wild monkeys also damaged their crops and properties as well as stole their food. One of the villagers urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action as two villagers have been attacked by the animal in the past week.
Advertisement The villager said at about 4pm on Tuesday, his uncle was sleeping at his house's veranda in Kampung Louk Terusan when he was attacked by a wild monkey. The victim suffered injuries on his feet in the incident and the monkey attempted to launch a second attack. However, the victim managed to grab a cushion pillow and machete to scare away the monkey. The victim was later rushed by his son to the land using a boat and taken to the Emergency Department for treatment. It was learnt that a child in Kampung Tanjung Paras in Pulau Sakar was also attacked by a wild monkey. 'We hope the relevant authorities will take action on the wild monkeys as the villagers are forced to live in fear of wild monkeys,' he added. Lahad Datu Wildlife Department Officer Hairulnizam Hasnan, when contacted, said they received a report on the incident. Love scam targets US men
Police have arrested dozens on the popular resort island of Bali for allegedly running a love scam syndicate targeting American men. Police made the arrests after being tipped off about suspicious activity at a rented home in Denpasar, the island's capital. A total of 38 suspects, seven of them women, were arrested. 'The suspects arrested worked as operators whose job is to find the love scam victims, they targeted Americans who have a Telegram account,' said Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya. 'They pretended to be women by using women's pictures and fake identity to ensnare their victims.' The suspects confessed to working for someone who controlled the business from Cambodia to lure Americans to hand over sensitive information, Daniel said. They chatted up their victims through Telegram and sent them fake links. The suspects were paid US$200 (RM845) each per month to steal the victims' data and information. The suspects, all Indonesians, face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of violating the country's electronic transaction law. Police had previously said many scammers had moved to Indonesia and other South-East Asian countries after a crackdown in China. In 2019, Indonesian police arrested 85 Chinese nationals and six Indonesians over an online scam that tricked victims out of millions of dollars. In 2023, they arrested 88 Chinese nationals in Batam for running a syndicate that has scammed hundreds of victims in China by luring them into sexual acts and then blackmailing them with video footage. Duo held for drugs in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Two men, including a foreigner, were arrested for syabu. District Acting Police Chief Supt Jimmy Panyau said the duo were detained following the Op Tapis conducted by Narcotic Crime Investigation Division (BSJND). He said the operation is among efforts to combat drug activities in the district. Advertisement Jimmy said in the first operation about 1pm on Wednesday, a 42-year-old foreigner was detained behind the shop in Taman Aman 3, Jalan Silam. 'The man was found possessing 30 packets of translucent plastic containing substances believed to be syabu weighing 5.55 grammes. 'The suspect also tested positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine. The seizures were estimated worth RM610.50,' he said. The second suspect, a 31-year-old local, was detained at the security post in Jalan Segama. He said the suspect was in possession of 0.78 grammes of syabu, and tested positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine. 'Both suspects are in our custody and investigations carried out under Section 39A(1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952. Trio held in Semporna, Labuan raids

SEMPORNA: Marine Police arrested three men allegedly misappropriating diesel, petrol and cooking oil following raids in Semporna and Labuan. Sabah Region Four Marine Commander, ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said, about 3.40pm on June 10, a police team raided a warehouse in Labuan. Advertisement Further inspection on the warehouse found three Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tanks containing diesel and nine IBC tanks containing 8,500kg of cooking oil. 'A total of 2,600 litres of diesel were seized. All the seizures were estimated worth RM370,324. 'The team also detained an individual to assist in investigation,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. Mohd Nazri said about 5.30pm on the same day, Marine Police from Semporna and Lahad Datu seized 153 jerry cans containing petrol and two boats at Kampung Batu in Semporna. Two individuals were detained to assist in investigation while the seizures were estimated worth RM107,738.50. Mohd Nazri added that investigations were carried out under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
