In a recent instance, a 52-year-old brain stroke patient, who was in coma and required immediate surgery, was turned away by a city-based private hospital because he could not undergo the iris scanning. Unable to avail the scheme's benefits and the pricey ICU charges left his family with no other option than to leave the hospital. He was, however, lucky as the next hospital he got admitted to, carried out his iris scanning during the CT scanning procedure, and his surgery was conducted smoothly.
In another case, family members of a 42-year-old man suffering from strangulated hernia had to pay cash to conduct his surgery as there appeared a glitch while uploading his ration card on the portal. Though they visited the Jan Seva Kendra for help and also dialled the helpline number 104, nothing could solve their problem. Since there is possibility of gangrene if strangulated hernia is not operated within 48 hours, the family members had no other option than to pay cash for surgery.
The protocol used in the earlier Bjiu Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) was very simple. Any member of the family could enrol the patient under the scheme just by using his Aadhaar card. But, in AB PM-JAY, self-identification through iris scanner is necessary which is often difficult in some cases, especially when a patient is in coma stage, said a doctor who runs a private hospital.

Various schemes to financially support divyang's healthcare: Govt
New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) The Government today told Parliament that a slew of schemes aimed at improving healthcare access and financial support for persons with disabilities (PwD) has been launched for the welfare of the sector in the past few years. Under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), the Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme provides affordable health coverage specifically for PwD wherein beneficiaries can avail up to Rs. 1 lakh in medical insurance benefits without the requirement of pre-insurance medical tests, ensuring easy access to healthcare services. This was stated by Union Minister of State for Health, Prataprao Jadhav in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. He further said the central flagship scheme, PM-JAY, offers cashless treatment up to Rs. 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary healthcare. Approximately 12 crore families, including many PwDs identified through the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC-2011), are set to benefit. The scheme particularly emphasises support for rural and vulnerable populations, with specific inclusion criteria such as 'Disabled member and no able-bodied adult member.' The National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021, provides vital financial assistance of up to Rs. 50 lakhs for the treatment of 63 rare diseases. This support is delivered through 14 designated Centres of Excellence, significantly reducing out-of-pocket expenses for affected families and improving access to specialised care, said the Minister. Further, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in its order has directed the insurers to make available products/add-ons/riders to provide wider choice to the policyholders/prospects catering to all ages, all types of existing medical conditions, pre-existing diseases, chronic conditions etc, added Jadhav. Bastar region sets benchmark in digital healthcare services in Chhattisgarh: Govt
Raipur: Chhattisgarh's Bastar division has been witnessing a major transformation in healthcare with the effective implementation of digital medical services in the tribal-dominated region, officials said on Monday. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has been making consistent and determined efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in Bastar, where effective implementation of the Next Gen e-Hospital system , Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana services are proving to be a game-changer, a government statement said. The Next Gen e-Hospital system is functioning in six district hospitals, two civil hospitals and 41 community health centres of the Bastar region comprising seven districts, including Bastar, Kanker, Kondgaon, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada and Sukma, it said. This system brings the OPD registration, consultation, diagnostics, medicine distribution and all patient-related medical information on to a single digital platform, ensuring better and timely services for patients. The integration of digital technology has led to remarkable improvements in transparency, efficiency and patient satisfaction across these hospitals, the release said. Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, Health Facility Registration (HFR) for hospitals and Health Professional Registration (HPR) for doctors and nursing staff have been completed in the region. Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) kiosks have been set up in hospital premises, enabling patients to create their health accounts. The "Scan & Share" feature and ABHA ID-based online OPD registration have spared patients from waiting in long queues, allowing them to receive prompt services, the release said. The impact of these digital innovations is visible, as the Bastar District Hospital recorded a total of 60,045 OPD registrations in May, June and July this year. Out of these, 32,379 (53 per cent) were linked with ABHA. During the same period, Dantewada District Hospital recorded 33,895 OPD registrations, with 13,729 (40 per cent) linked to ABHA, as per the release. This entire process not only saves time but also provides patients with digital health records which they can access anywhere in the country. It has improved transparency in the healthcare system while enhancing continuity and quality of treatment, it said. CM Sai said the digital services have ensured timely, accessible and quality treatment to patients in the region. "This initiative is not just a model for Bastar but for the entire state. We will soon implement it across all districts to realise the vision of a 'Healthy and Empowered Chhattisgarh'," he added. State Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said these services in healthcare go beyond mere digitisation as they serve as a powerful bridge connecting people in rural and remote areas to quality medical facilities. The positive results from Bastar prove that when technology, administrative willpower and public participation come together, the pace of development multiplies manifold, he said. This initiative will not only transform healthcare services, but also ensure Chhattisgarh's substantial contribution to building a 'Healthy India', he added.

104 pvt hospitals empanelled under govt health schemes in 6 months
Pune: In just six months, 104 private hospitals across the district have been added to the state's flagship health insurance programme, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), and central government's Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), according to district health officials. (Photo by Shankar Narayan/HT PHOTO) The Public Health department had launched a state-wide drive in January to expand the network of hospitals empanelled under the two schemes, which provide citizens free or cashless treatment on several procedures and surgeries. Since the launch of the campaign, the number of empanelled hospitals in Pune district has increased from 98 to 202, said the officials. The MJPJAY scheme was launched in 2012 and revamped in 2023 to make it universal and increase the treatment cover from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh. Under the PMJAY scheme, beneficiaries are provided coverage of upto ₹5 lakh per year, per family. Currently, there are 1,359 private and 672 government facilities empanelled under both schemes in the state, covering 1,352 health procedures. Dr Priti Lokhande, district coordinator of MJPJAY and PMJAY, said that the newly-added 104 hospitals include private hospitals and medical colleges with 30 beds to 200 beds. 'With a larger number of hospitals getting empanelled, specialised and emergency healthcare will become more accessible to people, especially in semi-urban and rural areas. Twenty five other hospitals are also in the process of getting empanelled,' she said. Dr Nagnath Yempalle, district civil surgeon, said that beneficiaries can avail treatment for a wide range of illnesses, surgeries, and procedures without bearing the financial burden. 'The state health department plans to keep up the drive to ensure that people have more choices for treatment nearer home.' However, charitable hospitals in the city are unwilling to participate. On April 21, the state issued a Government Resolution (GR) making it mandatory for such hospitals to join state and central health schemes. In response, the Association of Hospitals (AOH) in Pune filed a writ petition with the Bombay high court, citing financial and practical difficulties as reasons for their opposition to the government decision.
