Nigerian Vice President Urges Africa to Follow Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative

Nada Mustafa
Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on African nations to emulate Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative, describing it as an inclusive, impactful, and visionary model for tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development. This is reported by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.
He made the remarks after participating in a tree-planting event at the Gulele Riverside Project in Addis Ababa, alongside Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian officials, and members of the diplomatic community, according to TV BRICS.
'There is an incestuous relationship between economy and ecology in Africa – and these efforts by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his team to make Ethiopia green are worthy of emulation by all other African nations,' the Vice President stated.
Describing the initiative as a 'win-win' solution, Shettima noted that it extends beyond environmental restoration by generating employment, reclaiming degraded lands, and boosting agricultural productivity.
He emphasised the active participation of women and youth, highlighting the programme's inclusive nature and long-term economic potential.
'It's about sustainability and economic viability,' he noted. 'The trees in the next couple of years will start yielding fruits. It will mitigate the effects of climate change and enhance the livelihoods of our people.'
Praising Ethiopia's ambition to plant over 40 billion trees through the Green Legacy Initiative, Shettima described the programme as a 'game-changer' and expressed confidence in its power to inspire a new era of climate action across the continent.

Egyptian Journalists Syndicate heads slams Emad Adib's meeting with Israel's Yair Lapid

The Head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, Khaled al-Balshy, responded to the television interview between journalist Emad Adib and former Israeli Prime Minister and opposition leader Yair Lapid. Balshy affirmed the Syndicate's firm position rejecting any form of normalization with Zionists. 'The Syndicate's General Assembly's firm position rejects all forms of professional, union, and personal normalization (with Zionists),' he stressed. He declared in a Friday statement 'From this standpoint, I declare my rejection of the professional and humanitarian crime committed by Adib in his interview with the Zionist Yair Lapid, during which he provided a platform to justify the war crimes committed by the occupation army and its crimes in the region.' 'Adib was removed from the Syndicate's list following a decision by the preliminary disciplinary committee in September 2020, for arbitrarily dismissing dozens of fellow journalists at Al-Alam Al-Youm newspaper and retroactively closing their insurance files for five years prior to 2014. He is no longer a member of the Journalists Syndicate.' He also assured that the union would not have hesitated to immediately punish Adib had he retained his membership. Balshy called on all fellow journalists to abide by the union's general assembly's decision, emphasizing that any member who violates the decision will be immediately referred to a union investigation.

Ahly's Palestinian striker Abou Ali draws Gulf interest after Club World Cup heroics - Egyptian Football

Egyptian giants Ahly have reportedly received lucrative offers from Gulf clubs for Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali following his standout performances at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The 26-year-old forward scored three goals during the tournament, catching the eye despite Ahly's early exit in the group stage. Upon the team's return to Cairo, Ahly were reportedly approached by Qatari side Al-Rayyan, UAE club Al-Wasl, and Major League Soccer outfit New York Red Bulls, all of which expressed interest in signing the prolific striker. According to local media, Al-Rayyan have submitted a $8 million bid, while Al-Wasl offered $7 million. However, sources close to the club suggest Ahly have set a $10 million price tag for their star striker. Ahly sporting director Mohamed Youssef insisted last week that Abou Ali is not for sale, stating: 'The team needs his contributions in the coming period.' However, with interest growing and substantial offers on the table, the club's stance could be put to the test. Since joining Ahly in January 2024, Abou Ali has quickly established himself as a vital figure in the squad. He netted 18 goals in 19 appearances to win the Egyptian Premier League Golden Boot in his debut season. Despite injuries hampering his most recent campaign, he managed 10 goals in 16 league matches, finishing just behind teammate Emam Ashour in the scoring charts. Abou Ali's most memorable moment came in Ahly's final Club World Cup match, where he scored a perfect hat-trick in a thrilling 4-4 draw against FC Porto.
