Kirk Cousins felt 'a little bit misled' when Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr.
' I don't really deal in hypotheticals,' Cousins said at the time.
In the first episode of his second turn on the Quarterback series, he did.
After explaining that he picked Atlanta over Minnesota in free agency because the Vikings wanted to go 'year-to-year' and the Falcons made a longer commitment, Cousins said he was 'pretty surprised' by the news that Penix had been drafted in the top 10.
'I wasn't expecting us to take a quarterback,' Cousins said. 'At the time, it felt like I'd been a little bit misled — or certainly if I had the information around free agency, it certainly would have affected my decision. I had no reason to leave Minnesota with how much we loved it there, if both teams are gonna be drafting a quarterback high.'
Beyond loving Minnesota, Cousins was comfortable in Kevin O'Connell's offense. It became clear during the first episode of Quarterback that Cousins felt a little overwhelmed by the offense in Atlanta.
'It's different enough to feel like I'm starting over,' Cousins said regarding the Falcons offense.
One challenge came from the pre-snap motions and shifts, similar to what the Dolphins had been doing. 'That was a lot to learn,' Cousins said.
It came to a head in Week 1, when a game-deciding fumble happened because of a miscommunication that resulted in a shotgun snap striking tight end Ross Dwelley, while he was going in motion past the center.
'I knew that was gonna happen,' Cousins said as he came off the field.
'I have to give the foot, then send you,' Cousins told Dwelley on the sideline. 'I sent you and then gave the foot. And if I do that, we have no room for error. It's a fumble every time. It was just — all week long, I was paranoid. I'm gonna do it one time and screw it up. And it did.'
It's a tangible, and valuable, example for quarterbacks who are thinking about changing teams in the future. You never know what that team is going to do with its first-round pick. You never know how different the offense is going to be until you're in it.
And you never know how it's going to feel to line up 'with a new team with a new system in a new home stadium' until it's time to do it.

O'Neal has always been critical of the four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year winner, from saying he was not worth the assets he was traded for, to saying he was not worth the massive contract the Minnesota Timberwolves gave him after acquiring him from the Utah Jazz. It seems like the Gobert trade was eons ago. But despite that, Shaq has not forgotten Rudy's "sins" against "The Big Man Alliance." "My problem is from player to consumer. Gobert has already played out the big contract Two weeks ago, the newly crowned NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, signed Gilgeous-Alexander to a four-year supermax extension worth $285 million, giving him an average salary of $71.25 million, the largest-ever at the time the deal was announced. But while O'Neal was correct that SGA deserves every penny of whatever the Thunder is paying him, comparing his contract to Gobert's was off. The Frenchman has already played out the disputed five-year $205 million deal, which he signed when he was still in Utah. Before the start of last season, Gobert declined his $46.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season to sign a smaller three-year deal worth $110 million. That means he will be making just $35 million next season, or $11 million less than what he was supposed to earn as per his old contract. This isn't the only time that Gobert took a discount to help his team's finances. When he signed that $205 million deal in 2020, many people didn't realize his max amount that year was $228 million, but he took less to help the Jazz add more pieces. In contrast, Shaq once admitted that the real reason why he left the Lakers was because they asked him to take less money and he wouldn't. Michigan's Sherrone Moore refuses to name Bryce Underwood as starting QB, says it's an open competition
For a quarterback who has yet to start a game in college, Bryce Underwood already has plenty of accolades to his name. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class and parlayed that success into already appearing on a video game cover. Given his potential and star power, Underwood seems destined to open the season as Michigan's starting quarterback, right? Not so fast. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore refused to name Underwood as the team's starter, calling the position an "open competition" for now. That may come as a surprise to some considering Underwood's status as a highly touted recruit. But Moore is willing to see what Mikey Keene can do during camp before making his decision. Keene, who joined Michigan as a transfer from Fresno State, threw 18 touchdowns against 11 interceptions last season. While Underwood comes with more hype, Keene does have experience, playing in 39 games over his college career. For all the excitement over Underwood, he could lack the polish necessary to start from Day 1. Underwood will almost certainly see time as Michigan's starter this season, but it's possible Keene's experience makes him the better option for the team initially. Competent quarterback play would go a long way for the Wolverines, who finished 8-5 last season despite a miserable offense. Any improvement on that side of the ball — particularly at quarterback — would go a long way toward making Michigan a national championship contender. Despite last year's struggles, the team still appears on early top-25 lists ahead of the 2025-26 season. Moore has a few weeks before he needs to make a decision. Michigan opens the year against New Mexico on Aug. 30. Who will open the season under center when the Wolverines take the field for that contest? Moore is willing to give it some time before he makes that call.
