Berri urges govt. to prioritize reconstruction, says 'will escalate if Salam escalates'

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri seems to support ally Hezbollah in its cold war with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Salam, who vowed the state's monopoly on arms since his appointment, recently escalated his rhetoric saying that the era of "exporting the Iranian revolution has ended" and that the state "will not remain silent over any arms outside the state's control". "The region has grown tired of Iranian-U.S. polarization," he said.
Hezbollah MP Mohammad Raad responded criticizing Salam for recently omitting the word "Resistance" from the "Resistance and Liberation Day" holiday in one of his statements, but said he would not say more "to preserve what's left of cordiality."
Berri seemed to take Hezbollah's side, telling local al-Joumhouria newspaper, in remarks published Friday, that "if Salam escalates, we will escalate and if he chooses to calm things down, we will calm them down."
Berri went on to say that it is the government's responsibility to prioritize the construction of war-hit regions, "whether it likes it or not."
"It must be the first topic to discuss with sisterly countries, especially since Lebanon has begun strengthening its relations with the world."
Salam had said that Lebanon, exhausted by divisions and wars, is returning to the Arab fold and will be open to the world.

Behind closed doors: UN envoy meets Hezbollah official to discuss Resolution 1701 and Israeli violations

Report by Wissam Nasrallah, English adaptation by Yasmine Jaroudi In a discreet meeting held at an undisclosed time and place, Hezbollah's Coordination and Liaison Unit chief, Wafiq Safa, met with the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, to discuss key issues surrounding U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701. According to Hezbollah, the primary focus of the meeting was the implementation of Resolution 1701, with Safa reiterating the group's commitment to the framework while presenting what he described as ongoing Israeli violations of the accord. The conversation reportedly expanded to include the upcoming renewal of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, which is scheduled for a vote at the end of August. Israel is said to be applying pressure to prevent the renewal or at least reduce the mission's mandate. The meeting also addressed concerns over potential escalation along the southern border and emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to Resolution 1701 to maintain regional stability strictly. While Hezbollah insisted the meeting was part of routine coordination and not intended for message delivery or backchannel negotiations, the involvement of Hennis-Plasschaert—who previously served as the Netherlands' first female defense minister and U.N. Special Representative for Iraq—adds weight to the encounter. Her presence suggests a deeper diplomatic interest, especially given the current tensions and Israeli pressure on both Hezbollah and the U.N. mission. No official statement has been issued from the U.N. envoy's office regarding the meeting or its contents. However, the mere occurrence of such a meeting is seen by some observers as potentially significant, raising questions about whether Plasschaert was seeking to convey specific international concerns or simply assessing Hezbollah's position amid mounting geopolitical pressure.

Israeli Assault on Gaza Enters 603rd Day Amid Intensified Bombardment, Rising Civilian Death Toll

The Israeli occupation army continues its brutal assault on the Gaza Strip for the 603rd consecutive day, carrying out a wave of airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling across multiple areas. The ongoing offensive has resulted in numerous fatalities, dozens of injuries, and extensive destruction to civilian infrastructure and residential homes. In northern Gaza, the body of a Palestinian martyr was recovered following an Israeli airstrike on the city of Beit Lahia. Intense artillery fire also targeted northern Gaza City, as well as areas near the Wadi Gaza bridge and the city of Al-Zahra, north of the Nuseirat refugee camp. Widespread Demolition in Khan Younis In a notable development, Israeli occupation forces carried out repeated demolitions of residential buildings in the town of Al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis. The bodies of two martyrs killed in a previous Israeli strike on the town were recovered from beneath the rubble. Artillery shelling resumed alongside the fresh demolitions, further devastating the area. The municipality of Khuza'a, east of Khan Younis, reported that the scale of destruction caused by Israeli bombardment has surpassed all estimates. It declared the town completely non-operational, stating that all aspects of civilian life have been targeted, rendering it a disaster zone in every sense. In central Gaza, a Palestinian civilian was martyred and several others wounded when Israeli occupation forces targeted a group of people in Khan Younis. Separately, Israeli warplanes struck the Bukhit family home in the Al-Saftawi area of northern Gaza City, resulting in multiple injuries, according to medical services. Hezbollah MP Slams Lebanese Ministers: Implementation of Gov't Obligations Can't Be Selective

Member of Hezbollah's Loyalty to Resistance MP Hasan Fadlallah slammed some ministers in the Lebanese government, noting that their remarks contradict with the ministerial statement. In an address during a local ceremony in the southern town of Zawtar Al-Sharqiya, MP Fadlallah said 'some positions we hear from members of the government aimed at evading the responsibilities they have committed to before the Lebanese people.' In this context, MP Fadlallah stressed that such responsibilities 'are the commitments on the basis of which the Lebanese government won the Parliament's confidence. 'Some of the government's members act as if the implementation of these obligations is a selective process based on what they desire, or on what is imposed on them by foreign powers' external dictates.' He explained that the ministerial statement stipulated that the Government is committed to reconstruction, defending the border and its people as well as taking all measures in order to liberate the land. 'Has the government implemented its commitments regarding reconstruction and the other two issues?' MP Fadlallah wondered. The Hezbollah lawmaker, meanwhile, called on these ministers to 'implement their commitments first.' 'We have nothing more to give, to anyone, in any way, whether in South Lebanon, or in any region. We have fulfilled our obligations at all levels.' 'The current government is obligated, according to the Constitution and legal text, to implement the provisions of the ministerial statement. We have nothing else to say. When they implement these provisions, we will talk about other matters.' Fadlallah remarks come as the Israeli enemy goes ahead with attacks on Lebanon, in violation of the ceasefire that ended the 66-day Israeli war. A Lebanese citizen was martyred at dawn on Saturday in an Israeli drone strike on his vehicle in the southern town of Deir Al-Zahrani.
