Fairfax man charged with string of kratom thefts
Authorities charged David Elliot, of Fairfax, with five counts of burglary in connection with the break-ins, which took place near Kings Park West in Fairfax County and across the City of Fairfax.
It all started in the early morning hours of June 26, when FCPD officers were dispatched to Star Tobacco, located at University Mall on Braddock Road, after the store's burglary alarm went off.

The security company reported that surveillance cameras captured an unknown person breaking into the business and stealing kratom products before fleeing.
About two weeks later, shortly after 5 a.m. on July 13, officers responded to the same Star Tobacco for another commercial burglary alarm. At the scene, they discovered that the store's front door was broken and that someone had once again stolen kratom products.
FCPD detectives launched an investigation, and were contacted by the City of Fairfax Police Department soon after for three similar burglaries that took place in Fairfax. After examining the break-ins, detectives concluded that the same unknown person committed all five burglaries.
Through the investigation, detectives identified Elliot as the suspect. He was taken into custody at his home on July 25 and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was later released on a $5,000 bond.
Fairfax County Police connected him to two more robberies in Fairfax, both at the Star Tobacco location on Braddock Road on June 26 and July 13. Police say he stole Kratom drug products in both instances.
A search warrant was conducted of Elliot's home, and evidence related to the burglaries was seized.
Elliot was charged with multiple counts of burglary and was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was released on bond.
'Some of the vape shop burglaries that have occurred have been repeat locations. Kratom is something new that we have seen, stolen most recently. Only in these burglaries that have just occurred,' said Deputy Chief Gregory Fried of the Fairfax County Police Department. 'It has been stolen for individual use, and it's been stolen and sold.'
Police say thefts, along with the resale and misuse of the Kratom drug, pose public safety risks.
Kratom is not regulated by the FDA, but is widely available and advertised for sale at many tobacco and vape shops across Fairfax County. The Virginia Department of Health says it's potentially addictive, with similar properties to opioids. Some people take it to reduce opioid cravings or treat pain.
On Tuesday, the FDA announced plans to consider one of Kratom's byproducts, known as '7-OH,' as a Schedule 1 drug.
The FDA commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, says researchers don't have good data on how many people have died from using drugs like 7-OH and Kratom.
'We need to be proactive so we don't get caught blindsided again,' he said of the nation's opioid epidemic during a speech Tuesday.

The boy was allegedly beaten from late Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the outlets, and home security footage also showed some of the couple's other four foster children attempting to clean up blood around the house afterwards. "The video captures large amounts of blood being deposited on the floor during the assaults," reads a police affidavit, according to WNEP. "Some of the children who reside in the residence were observed actively cleaning blood from the floor." PEOPLE has not directly reviewed the police affidavit. The outlet reported that two of the foster children woke up Virginia, 34, early Monday morning, after which she discovered the 13-year-old boy unresponsive in his basement bedroom. Police soon arrived at the home, and the boy was taken to the local Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton, where he died about an hour later, according to WNEP. Cesar, 39, has been charged with homicide, child endangerment, evidence tampering and obstruction, according to WNEP. State police charged Virginia with five counts of endangering the welfare of children, four counts of corruption of minors, and one count of tampering with physical evidence, according to WVIA. Cesar reportedly began abusing the boy after two of the couple's other foster children claimed the teen had sexually assaulted them, per affidavits cited by WVIA. The family's five foster children ranged from 5 to 16 years old, according to WVIA. The outlet also reported that the four living foster children are now in state custody as Cesar and Virginia await court hearings later this month. A Metropolitan Police volunteer officer groomed a child after meeting her online and told her she 'enjoyed being raped' during sexual encounters, a court heard. Prosecutors said the 27-year-old, who was born a man named James Bubb but now identifies as a woman named Gwyn Samuels, asked one alleged victim to perform a sex act in public when she was 12 years old. The court heard the defendant was later forced to hurriedly pull their trousers up after a dog walker went past while the alleged victim performed the sex act. The alleged victim said in a statement to police she did not realise at the time that she was 'being groomed', prosecutor Richard Milne said. According to the first alleged victim, at the age of 13, 14 or 15, the pair met up where her virginity was taken by the defendant and she was choked so she could not speak. Mr Milne told the court the defendant and the alleged victims would be referred to by their biological sex throughout the trial when discussing the allegations. Amersham Law Courts heard that the defendant met the first alleged victim, a 12-year-old, in person at a Christian festival while working there as a steward, and told her they were in a relationship, despite her wearing a 'bracelet pass' for a child. In his opening to the jury on Monday, Mr Milne said the first alleged victim met the defendant on a website called Omegle. The court heard their communications became sexual around a month after first meeting online, with the alleged victim describing their relationship as a 'trauma bond'. After taking the first alleged victim's virginity, the defendant had sex with her on a number of occasions, the court heard. Mr Milne said: 'He would tell (the first alleged victim) that they enjoyed being raped, to which (they) replied no. 'The Crown says this defendant befriended and sexually assaulted (the first complainant) just before her 13th birthday.' He added that the defendant had sexual encounters with her when she was 13 to 15 years old, and then, after a gap, the prosecution says he raped her when she was 18 years of age. The defendant has denied one count of rape in relation to one complainant, and two counts of rape, two counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, one count of rape of a child under 13 and one count of assault by penetration in relation to the other complainant. All charges are alleged to have taken place between January 1 2018 to April 2 2024. The defendant, of High Street, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, denies all charges. The trial continues.

'Devastated' boyfriend covered ex-partner's body with blanket and left her undiscovered on sofa for years
A "devastated" boyfriend who found his ex-partner dead on his sofa covered up her body with a blanket and left her undiscovered for years, a court heard. Jamie Stevens, who carried on living in the flat in Torquay, Devon, as the body of Anouska Sites remained in the lounge, has admitted she "deserved better", his lawyer said. The 51-year-old was jailed for 14 months at Exeter Crown Court after pleading guilty to charges of preventing a lawful burial and perverting the course of justice. The second charge related to Stevens lying to police in a witness statement about his knowledge of the whereabouts of Ms Sites. Ms Sites' death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be submitted to the coroner in due course, Devon and Cornwall Police have said. The last known sighting of Ms Sites, who who would now be 36, was in May 2022 and her remains were not discovered until May 2025, Exeter Crown Court heard. Hollie Gilbery, prosecuting, told the court Ms Sites was reported missing to the police in April 2023. "Inquiries confirmed she had last been seen by police in May the previous year," she said. "Unfortunately, due to her vulnerabilities, including mental health problems and addictions, she had been in fairly regular contact with the police." Ms Gilbery said contact was made with Stevens as a former partner of Ms Sites in April this year, making inquiries about her whereabouts. "He told the police he had no contact with Ms Sites since February or March 2022," she said. Police spoke with Stevens again on 27 May and he told them he was no longer living at the flat in Upton Road. Officers later went round and gained entry. "The officers who attended described the flat as being like that of a hoarder with rubbish, faeces and bottled urine scattered throughout the property," Ms Gilbery said. "Police started to search the flat, and upon lifting a blanket in the living area they discovered a skeletal arm and hand. "Officers did notice there were various fragranced items scattered around the lounge, inferring they must have been to mask any smells." Stevens, of Reddenhill Road, Torquay, who was in a relationship with Ms Sites between 2011 and 2014, was arrested and told police it was her body. "He explained she had come to his flat around January 2023 asking if she could stay the night," the prosecutor said. "He went to his own bed and left her sleeping in the living room. "The next day he had gone out, returning at about 11.30pm, assuming that Ms Sites would have left, but instead he found her on the sofa. "He explained he threw a blanket over her body and continued to live in his bedroom and never really returned to the lounge." "Until he signs the statement saying he hasn't seen Ms Sites for a number of years," he said. "That is the perverting the course of justice, which moves it to more than just passive non-reporting. "Perhaps obvious, but when one fails to report something so serious in the first day or so, it becomes rather self-perpetuating. "The fear of reporting it... even a week or so later." Mr Dentith said Stevens had told him: "Ms Sites was a lovely person, my partner, my friend, and I was devastated when she died, and I miss her terribly. She deserved better." Jailing Stevens for 14 months, Judge Anna Richardson said: "This is an absolutely tragic case. "You were in a relationship with Anouska Sites. Ms Sites had a number of difficulties, including substance misuse. "It seems at some time between mid-2022 and April 2023 Miss Sites went missing. She was not reported missing until April this year. "There is no reason on the basis of the post-mortem to doubt your account of having found Miss Sites dead in your address. "It seems you completely wrongly panicked and simply covered her body. You left her there for years."
