How to fill out NCAA tournament brackets fast, and smart, to win March Madness pools

New York Times20-03-2025

Sometime Thursday morning, wedged in your inbox between that really great sports newsletter and an HR email on the latest round of compliance training, there will materialize a critical missive from your NCAA Tournament office pool maestro.
'Reminder,' it will chide the tardy. 'Brackets lock when the tournament tips off at noon ET.'

That's when the cold sweat begins, and adrenaline surges through your body: You forgot to fill out your bracket.
By the time Gael from Marketing approaches your desk for your usual $7 craft coffee break, you're yelling at him like Jack Bauer making threats on '24': 'Caramel macchiatos, Gael??? There's no time!'
You don't need caffeine. You need bracket advice. Fast. Fear not. We've got you covered. Here's how to fill out your bracket in five minutes flat and look smart in the process using The Athletic's trove of tourney tips. (Heck, if you want, just scroll to the bottom and crib our picks from the bracket. We won't tell.)

For the single most important pick you'll make for any standard-scoring pools, focus on four teams that most resemble the nine most recent NCAA tournament champions: Auburn, Houston and moneyline co-favorites Florida and Duke. The Blue Devils are favored by The Athletic's Austin Mock's model, which simulates the outcome of possible tournament games 200,000 times. But don't dance with the Devils just yet.
Don't go crazy though: No team lower than a No. 8 seed has ever won the championship. If you think picking a No. 9 seed or lower is smart, you probably also think it's fine to reheat fish in the office microwave. It's not. Don't be that person. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Sammy.
A bracket of straight chalk/No. 1 picks has proven correct just once (2008). So which favorite is most likely to fall short this year?
Mock has all of their Final Four odds at 19 percent or better. A combo of these five is unique but sane.
Even that dude from accounting who hates the unexpected — what's his name again? Pete? — would appreciate the spreadsheets of The Athletic's Bracket Breaker team of Jordan Brenner and Peter Keating.
In the interest of, ahem, speed, welcome to Round 2:

Clock's ticking, and you've got an 11:30 Zoom with corporate about the latest TPS reports. We need some lightning-round action for teams we're not picking to go deep.
To fill in the final slots, apply a combo platter of the key insights from above: ID the weaknesses for favorites, use projections to guide your general thinking and, when teams are reasonably comparable, side with the underdog.
Slot the remaining favorites to their ultimate endpoints — Arizona (Sweet 16), Alabama (Elite Eight), Maryland (Sweet 16) — and voila. May your five-minute-or-less masterpiece bring you victory so you can treat Gael to one of those $7 frapps you skipped. In the meantime, exhale, mop up that residual flop sweat and soak in the following bracket, filled out with the more conservative picks outlined in the advice above.

Iowa baseball star earns Perfect Game All-American honors

Iowa baseball star earns Perfect Game All-American honors After a stellar junior campaign with the Hawkeyes, Iowa baseball ace pitcher Cade Obermueller has been named a Perfect Game third-team All-American. The left-hander is the Hawkeyes' first All-American honoree since Brody Brecht and Keaton Anthony earned it in 2023. The Iowa City, Iowa native earned the third-team All-America distinction after going 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 15 starts. He posted five quality starts and fanned 117 batters over 83.1 innings. His 117 punchouts rank second all-time in program history for strikeouts in a season. The highlight of Obermueller's 2024-25 season was his complete-game performance at Northwestern on March 4. In that game, he recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts while giving up only one hit, one run, and one base-on-balls in a 12-1 Hawkeyes run-rule win. Obermueller's third-team All-American honors add to his growing list of accomplishments from the past season, which now includes a 2025 All-Big Ten Tournament team and an ABCA/Rawlings NCAA All-Midwest Region first-team selection. While Obermueller could be in line for more honors following the conclusion of the 2025 College World Series later this month, a potential return for his senior season with the Hawkeyes could be vital to the program's success as they hope to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2023. Nets projected to take Michigan C Danny Wolf No. 27 in 2025 NBA Draft

The Brooklyn Nets have some important decisions to make ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft that begins on June 25 in which the team will have five picks to use. Brooklyn is focused on more than just the Draft, but when it comes to their future, the Nets will have to do their homework given that the players they take this year could be crucial members of the roster. In his latest mock draft for Bleacher Report, Jonathan Wasserman projected the Nets to take Michigan center Danny Wolf with the 27th overall pick in the Draft, the last of four first-round picks Brooklyn has at its disposal. Wolf, standing at 6-foot-11 and 252 pounds, is one of the more interesting players in this class given his ability to handle the ball and shoot at his size. Advertisement "Danny Wolf made a strong, final pitch to scouts against Auburn, finishing with 20 points and a number of eye-opening highlights that showcased his creation and shotmaking," Wasserman wrote on Wolf. "Though his three-point numbers might not indicate shooting improvement, he added a pull-up and step-back to his repertoire this year." Wolf, 21, is coming off a junior season with the Wolverines in which he averaged 13.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 33.6% from three-point land. Wolf put forth his production for a Michigan team that finished the 2024-25 regular season with a 27-10 record, allowing them to make the NCAA Tournament where they made it all the way to the Sweet 16 before losing to the Auburn Tigers. While it will be interesting to see if Wolf last until the 27th overall pick in a class that seems to taper off around the 12th pick or so, his skill set will be interesting for every team that has a first-round pick outside of the Lottery. "A 7-footer who made 21 dribble jumpers, served as Michigan's lead playmaker and still averaged 9.7 boards and 1.4 blocks is bound to entice a number of teams," Wasserman continued. Micah Parsons will attend Cowboys training camp with or without a contract extension: 'I'll be out there'

Micah Parsons confirmed that he would attend the Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California in August, even if he and the team do not reach a new contractual agreement. The statement comes as the pass rusher attempts to negotiate a new deal in Dallas. On Tuesday, Parsons was present at the Cowboys mandatory minicamp and told media members, 'I'll be out there.' Advertisement Parsons did not clarify if he would be participating in the Oxnard camps despite guaranteeing his presence. He also did not participate in drills on Tuesday despite addressing the press. According to The Athletic's Jon Machota, Parsons mentioned a lengthy meeting with team owner Jerry Jones in which his contract was not discussed. The Cowboys' minicamp runs through Thursday, meaning Parsons may get an answer about his contract over the next 48 hours. Before Tuesday, Parsons made a social media statement that had fans wondering if he was foreshadowing a training camp holdout. 'Even though the contract is not done, I have teammates and a playbook!' Parsons posted on X. 'I'm preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp! But it's in the owner's hands. I'm ready to win a Super Bowl." Advertisement Parsons is currently under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract that pays him $24 million in 2025. In his fourth year with America's Team, the 26-year-old tallied 30 solo and 13 assisted tackles with 12 sacks. Unfortunately, after three straight 12-5 seasons, the Cowboys had a tragic 7-10 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The brutal ending led to the Cowboys firing coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons. The head coach was replaced by Brian Schottenheimer, who assured Parsons his contractual limbo would be sorted. After Parsons called his new coach for a TikTok video, Schottenheimer commended Parsons' attitude over the situation. 'I know this is weird for everybody, but look, you're handling everything the right way, bro,' Schottenheimer told Parsons. 'This thing is going to get worked out.'
