Warning issued over Red Sea dive boat holidays after Egypt boat disaster
A safety bulletin for dive boat holidays in the Red Sea has been issued following the presumed deaths of several Brits who went missing after the boats capsized or caught fire.
The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is warning prospective diving holidaymakers to book only through recognised and reputable companies and ensure they have been given a safety briefing before embarking on a diving excursion in the Red Sea.
The safety bulletin, released on Thursday, comes after MAIB found that over the last five years, there have been 16 accidents involving liveaboard dive vessels operating in the Red Sea.
Three boats have been 'lost' in the last 21 months, resulting in numerous deaths, including UK nationals.
On 24 April 2023 several people were injured after dive boat Carlton Queen capsized and started to fill with water near Hurghada, Egypt, MAIB said. All 33 passengers and crew were able to be rescued.
Later that year on 11 June, dive boat Hurricane caught fire and was abandoned near Elphinstone Reef in the Red Sea. There were 29 people onboard, yet three UK passengers remain unaccounted for and are believed to have died.
The third accident occurred in November 2024, when dive boat Sea Story capsized and filled with water south of Port Ghalib, Egypt with 45 people on board.
Four bodies were recovered, while seven people who were on board when the boat capsized are still missing, including British couple Jenny Cawson, 36, and her husband Tariq Sinada, 49.
MAIB believes that the dive boats involved in these incidents were poorly constructed and often 'substantially modified/extended' meaning some were inadequately stable.
Other safety issues included essential lifesaving and safety equipment being defective, out-of-date or missing, poor structural fire protection, emergency escape routes were via lockable doors, had no emergency lighting and were unmarked, crew members were poorly trained or unfamiliar with the boats, and safety briefings for passengers were either poor or not done at all.
The investigation branch also found that these holidays are often 'marketed using ratings and reviews posted online that are not necessarily accurate and do not assure safety standards'.
It added that some consumers have reported finding themselves switched to another boat on arrival in Egypt, invalidating their attempts to choose a safe holiday.
MAIB is therefore advising those looking to book a dive boat holiday in the Red Sea to do so through recognised vendors and once on board, should request the crew provide a thorough safety briefing before departure.
It said this should include the emergency warning signal, emergency exits, muster stations, the location and use of safety equipment, and abandon ship procedures.
Andrew Moll, chief inspector of marine accidents, said the various incidents on these vessels are 'deeply regrettable' especially because they resulted in the loss of life.
'Our thoughts are with all those affected,' he continued.
'While MAIB does not have the jurisdiction to investigate accidents involving non-UK flagged vessels operating within the territorial waters of another coastal state, we have made the appropriate authorities aware of our national interest and offered every assistance with any safety investigation they conduct.
'Our safety bulletin provides important guidance to those intending to stay on liveaboard vessels,' he added.
'It is important to remember that such vessels are unlikely to be built, maintained, equipped, and operated to the standard of similar vessels in the UK and we urge the exercise of extreme caution when choosing a boat.'

LA protests turn violent after Trump deploys National Guard troops
Tear gas and flash bangs were used to control the crowd, as ITV News' Daniel Rosney reports Tensions have escalated in Los Angeles as thousands of protesters clashed with police, after President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops as part of his latest immigration crackdown. Demonstrators set fire to self-driving cars, blocked motorways and hurled chunks of concrete and electric scooters at police officers, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. Some were detained on Sunday evening, as police arrested those refusing to disperse. Sunday marked the third and most intense day of protests against Trump's immigration policy in the region. 'Some of the protesters came and helped me, and they ended up carrying me, and I noticed that there was blood pouring down my leg.' The arrival of around 2,000 National Guard troops came after two days of protests, which began on Friday, when federal agents arrested a number of immigrants in the city. More than 100 immigrant arrests were made last week in Los Angeles, according to federal authorities. The Guard is a US military reserve force often mobilised in domestic emergencies, answering to both state governors and the president. It was deployed to protect LA's federal buildings, including the downtown detention centre where protesters concentrated. Troops stood carrying long guns and riot shields on Sunday morning, as protesters shouted 'shame' and 'go home'. After some demonstrators came close to them, another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting smoke-filled canisters into the street. Minutes later, the Los Angeles Police Department fired rounds of crowd-control munitions to disperse the protesters, who they said were assembled unlawfully. Much of the group then moved to block traffic on the 101 freeway until police cleared them by the late afternoon. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said deploying the troops was 'essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States'. Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newsom requested that Trump remove the guard members in a letter on Sunday afternoon, calling their deployment a breach of state sovereignty. – Inciting and provoking violence – Creating mass chaos – Militarizing cities – Arresting opponents These are the acts of a dictator, not a President. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) June 8, 2025 In a post on social media platform X, Newsom launched a series of criticisms of the president, calling him a 'dictator' and accusing him of inciting violence. As he prepared to board Air Force One in New Jersey on Sunday, Trump told reporters that there were 'violent people' in Los Angeles, adding: 'They're not gonna get away with it.' Top holiday resort approves huge fines for public sex and nudity in major crackdown on badly-behaved Brit tourists

The Algarve party resort of Albufeira has gone to war against boozy tourists and slapped new rules to curb alcohol-fueled debauchery. Hefty fines will now be imposed for everything from urinating in the street to getting naked. The rules will kick in within weeks, in time for the summer season, aiming to curb anti-social behaviour. And locals hope they will turn the tide, with nakedness, vomiting in the street and having sex in public all now coming at a heavy price. Badly behaved tourists who go starkers in public, or get caught bonking or simulating sex, face paying anything from £1,685 to £3,375. Spitting or urinating in the street will be punished with fines of between £125 and £630. And entering bars and other businesses topless could lead to a £1,250 levy. Bars and cafes which let customers in without the proper dress code will also be fined. Brit tourists were first warned about the new get-tough rules in February when Albufeira's mayor Jose Carlos Rolo announced the "Code of Conduct" plans. Last summer, a group of partying Brit tourists put on a shocking display of public nudity, leaving the locals fuming. 'Can't believe it' cry locals as 'tourist' filmed cycling NAKED through Lanzarote amid anti-visitor fury plaguing Spain Footage of their drunken antics, showing them starkers on their knees in a line on top of a bar counter, went viral. Rolo called the display 'deeply negative' and said he would call for police reinforcements. He said last night: "Tourists who fall down drunk aren't needed here at all." Predictably, Albufeira is fast becoming the go-to spot for young revellers looking for a boozy break. During The Sun's investigation into tourist revelry in the town, we saw how cops and medics are already patrolling the mile-long strip — nicknamed 'The Chaos' by locals — to keep a firm eye on the crazy, drunken antics of holidaymakers. Little wonder some end up in a terrible state, as girls are plied with free drinks at many pubs in a bid to lure in paying lads, while every bar offers shots from £1.70. Local taxi driver Guilherme, 25, told The Sun: 'Stay here more than one night and you'll see tourists having sex in the street. Sometimes it's groups of naked men on balconies. It's shocking.' Furious locals decided to bring in the new code of conduct after a group of British louts got naked on a bar top and proceeded to crawl around in broad daylight last year. 9 Tourists throw up on the streets Credit: Olivia West 9 Couple caught getting frisky at the roadside Credit: Olivia West 9 Tourists lying on pavement Credit: Olivia West 9 Topless youths clamber clumsily up a stone wall Credit: Olivia West It comes as a 21-year-old Brit was found dead at the foot of a set of steps in Albufeira's old town last Wednesday. Cops are said to believe booze is behind the tragedy. The news, which emerged on Saturday, came days after reveller Greg Monks, 38, from Glasgow, was found dead in a ravine near Albufeira. He was there on a stag do and had left the party early to return to his hotel when it is thought he jumped over a wall while drunk, unaware there was a steep drop on the other side. He was missing for a week. The fatalities shine an unwelcome light on the more dangerous and seedier side of the Algarve resort. Once marketed as a family-friendly getaway, now a much younger crew of holidaymakers is descending on the cobbled streets, turning it into a nocturnal party town.

UK teen jailed in Dubai for holiday romance pleads with Sheikh to let him go
Marcus. who was on holiday with his family, had a fling with a 17-year-old girl from the UK - and has been jailed A UK teenager locked up in Dubai for having a holiday romance with a 17-year-old girl - also from the UK - has begged for mercy. Marcus Fakana has formally submitted a plea for clemency to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. The 19-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison after he struck up a romantic relationship with a 17-year-old British girl. Both his family and the girl's family were on holiday at the time. Marcus, who was 18 when the relationship began, is currently being held in Al Awir Prison, where he has spent several months in isolating and harsh conditions. He has now placed his hopes on a humanitarian pardon from Dubai's leadership. 'This has been the most traumatic and life-altering experience imaginable for Marcus,' said Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, which is supporting the teen's family. 'He is barely an adult himself and never intended to break any law. What happened was legal in the UK and consensual. 'But now he is facing permanent damage to his mental health and future prospects because of it.' Prison conditions are reportedly taking a toll on Marcus, who is said to have only limited contact with his family. His parents have made repeated appeals to David Lammy MP, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They have also requested the British Embassy in Dubai to help secure his release. Radha said: 'If Marcus could go back in time, he would. He has shown remorse and fully respects the laws of the UAE. He only hopes the government will show compassion and allow him to return home to rebuild his life. 'He's very young and this is a heartbreaking way to begin adulthood.' The family is urging the British public and authorities to back their plea for clemency. They have warned of the legal risks young Britons face in countries with vastly different legal systems. Radha added: 'Parents need to be aware that teens can be charged in the UAE for behaviour that would not be considered criminal at home. Whether that's a relationship, social media activity, or even drinking alcohol. 'Marcus is struggling, and this experience will leave a permanent scar. We implore Sheikh Mohammed and the government of Dubai to hear his pleas and let him come home.' Marcus continues to pray that his voice will be heard, with pardons expected to be finalised this month.
