Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said in Coimbatore on Thursday said that contents on road safety will be part of the assembly sessions in schools and a circular on the same will be issued soon.
Explanation of road safety signs will be made a part of morning assembly sessions in schools, similar to explanation of a Thirukkural or a proverbs or current affairs, said the Minister, after releasing road safety workbooks for students and faculty manuals for teachers brought out by non-governmental organisation Uyir under its 'Kutty Cops' initiative.
The Minister's announcement came after Uyir's managing trustee S. Rajasekaran and his team recommended bringing road safety education under the annual curriculum of school students.
Mr. Poyyamozhi released four sets of road safety workbooks developed by Uyir for Class III, Classes IV and V, Class VI, and Classes VII and VIII. He also released faculty manuals for teachers for these standards.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said Uyir Trust and the district administration will jointly undertake various initiatives to reduce road traffic accidents in the coming months.
According to City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, members of Uyir clubs in colleges and the city police are conducting various awareness programmes, including a mega helmet awareness campaign, which created significant impacts among motorists.
He said the best tech-based solutions and recommendations from 'Uyir Road Safety Hackathon 2025' held in February this year are being rolled out in the city. Virtual reality and augmented reality-based road safety education, artificial intelligence-based traffic monitoring, smart pedestrian alert system, etc., are among the concepts that are being introduced, he said.
The workbooks and faculty guides, which have come out in Tamil and English, will be given to three lakh students and teachers in 2,000 schools in the district, a release from Uyir stated.
Ahead of the release of the books on Thursday afternoon, 812 school teachers underwent an orientation workshop on the Uyir Kutty Cops Road Safety Curriculum at Corporation Kalai Arangam at R.S. Puram.
Pollachi MP K. Eswarasamy; Coimbatore Mayor R. Ranganayaki, Uyir trustees R. Nandini, S. Malarvizhi, Ramesh Kumar Tibrewal, and S. Chandrasekar, and Coimbatore District Chief Education Officer R. Balamurali were present. A minute of silence was observed for the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad.

Vishwas Kumar lone survivor in Air India crash, his brother dies

The photo of Viswash Kumar Ramesh, bruised and battered, limping away from the debris of the Air India flight that crashed seconds after take-off in Ahmedabad on Thursday has become one of the defining images of India's worst aviation disaster in a decade. At his home in Leicester, central England, however, Ramesh's family oscillated between joy at his escape and grief at the loss of his brother. 'We are happy Viswash has been saved, but on the other hand we are just heartbroken about Ajay,' Hiren Kantilal, Ramesh's cousin, said. Ajay was also on the same flight seated on 11J while Ramesh was on 11A. Their younger brother, Nayan, said the two were on the return journey home after a vacation in India. 'Luckily, the portion of the plane where I was seated fell on the ground floor of the hostel premises after the plane crash-landed. When I saw that the door of the plane was broken, I told myself I can try and get out,' said Ramesh. A spokesperson from Downing Street confirmed that the UK Foreign Office has been in contact with Ramesh to offer consular support. Apart from Ramesh and Ajay, there were 51 other British nationals on the Air India flight. Of them, Hardik Avaiya, 27 and Vibhooti Patel, 28, have been identified as the victims. Avaiya and Patel, both Leicester residents, had gone to India to celebrate their engagement. Arjun Patoliya, who went to India to fulfil his wife's dying wish to immerse her ashes in Narmada, was among the victims. 'Her wish was that the ashes must be submerged in Narmada River,' said a member of the Indian Gujarati community who did not wish to be identified. Patoliya is survived by his two daughters, aged four and eight. The two girls were in London at the time of the crash. In Wellingborough, an English town 65 miles from London, mayor Raj Mishra condoled the death of Raxa Modha, 55, who accompanied her husband Kishor to India. 'Kishor wanted to be in his hometown in his final days. He died on April 26, and Raxa, along with her daughter-in-law and grandson, was returning to UK,' a person aware of the matter said. The Muslim Community in Gloucester paid tributes to Akeel Nanabawa, who along with his wife and four-year-old child, were killed in the crash. The Indian High Commission in London has been receiving several queries from family members and relatives of those affected regarding visas to India. 'We are facilitating it all at the high commission,' said an official.

City that cared: In crash aftermath, Ahmedabad's humanity shines

Ahmedabad: When Prince Pattani , a young cricketer from Ahmedabad, took an unusual route to the cricket ground that day, he had no idea his life was about to change forever. "I heard a huge blast and instinctively ran towards it," he recalled. He and his entire team of friends rushed to the crash site, where debris and devastation awaited them. "We cracked open a windowpane and entered without thinking of our own lives," Prince said. "There were bodies dismantled, young doctors still clutching spoons in their hands, some with broken limbs. We managed to pull out at least seven to eight dead bodies, but we also found two people who were alive." The tragedy drew others from across the city who came forward to help in any way they could. Enamul Iraqi, a businessman from Sarkhej, was among the first to respond. On Thursday, as soon as news of the crash spread, he and his team from the Ahmedabad Muslim Seva Samaj reached Civil Hospital to offer assistance. The next day, Iraqi returned with a truck loaded with chilled water, soft drinks, roasted peanuts, and snacks for the workers and grieving families at the crash site. "I'm a businessman," Iraqi said. "But in times like this, what can one do? One has to step forward to share what they have." His friend, Maulvi Habib Ahmed Pathan , who runs a madrasa and an English-medium school in Saraspur, joined him in mobilising help. "There's nothing to say at times like these. You just stand with people and do what you can," he said. Ketan Parikh, a retired Air India employee, also came down to volunteer at the DNA room to assist in the identification process. The Ahmedabad Haj House opened its doors to the grieving families, offering shelter free of cost to at least 26 families, irrespective of their religion. "Before and after the Haj, this place is a guest house, but now it's their home," said Mujju Pathan, a volunteer. "We've brought them here to offer whatever comfort we can."
