Road safety awareness workbooks for students, manuals for teachers released under Uyir Kutty Cops

Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said in Coimbatore on Thursday said that contents on road safety will be part of the assembly sessions in schools and a circular on the same will be issued soon. Explanation of road safety signs will be made a part of morning assembly sessions in schools, similar to explanation of a Thirukkural or a proverbs or current affairs, said the Minister, after releasing road safety workbooks for students and faculty manuals for teachers brought out by non-governmental organisation Uyir under its 'Kutty Cops' initiative. The Minister's announcement came after Uyir's managing trustee S. Rajasekaran and his team recommended bringing road safety education under the annual curriculum of school students. Mr. Poyyamozhi released four sets of road safety workbooks developed by Uyir for Class III, Classes IV and V, Class VI, and Classes VII and VIII. He also released faculty manuals for teachers for these standards. District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said Uyir Trust and the district administration will jointly undertake various initiatives to reduce road traffic accidents in the coming months. According to City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, members of Uyir clubs in colleges and the city police are conducting various awareness programmes, including a mega helmet awareness campaign, which created significant impacts among motorists. He said the best tech-based solutions and recommendations from 'Uyir Road Safety Hackathon 2025' held in February this year are being rolled out in the city. Virtual reality and augmented reality-based road safety education, artificial intelligence-based traffic monitoring, smart pedestrian alert system, etc., are among the concepts that are being introduced, he said. The workbooks and faculty guides, which have come out in Tamil and English, will be given to three lakh students and teachers in 2,000 schools in the district, a release from Uyir stated. Ahead of the release of the books on Thursday afternoon, 812 school teachers underwent an orientation workshop on the Uyir Kutty Cops Road Safety Curriculum at Corporation Kalai Arangam at R.S. Puram. Pollachi MP K. Eswarasamy; Coimbatore Mayor R. Ranganayaki, Uyir trustees R. Nandini, S. Malarvizhi, Ramesh Kumar Tibrewal, and S. Chandrasekar, and Coimbatore District Chief Education Officer R. Balamurali were present. A minute of silence was observed for the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad.

Coimbatore doctor honoured with Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. S. Rajasekaran, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery, Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, received the 'Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award' at the annual meeting of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS) held in Atlanta, USA, on May 15. A press release said the award recognised his research in low back pain and disc biology. The ISSLS brings together spine surgeons and researchers in genetics, muscle physiology, radiology, bioengineering and implant technology. The award jury, consisting of members from Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the UK, selects recipients based on nominations by scientists. Dr. Rajasekaran was nominated by Dr. Robert Gunzberg, the chief Editor of European Spine Journal and Prof Jill Urban, eminent researcher and Professor in Oxford. The award is in recognition of Dr. Rajasekaran and his team's contributions in the fields of nutritional pathways of the lumbar disc, the effect of mechanical stress on the discs, patterns of failure of the disc leading to herniation and more recently the role of subclinical infection as a cause of disc degeneration and low back pain. They have also recently proved that many bacteria from the gut and the skin find their way into the spinal discs and cause inflammation that lead to back pain disorders. The Ganga Research Centre is also the first centre to be recognised by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India as an 'Advanced Centre for Molecular Research in Spinal diseases'. Dr. Rajasekaran has published 781 papers, with an H-index of 54 and over 13,000 citations.

Ganga Hospital designated as GCOE in trauma, joint replacement, arthroscopy surgeries

Coimbatore-based Ganga Hospital and healthcare major Johnson & Johnson MedTech entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on April 23, 2025 (Wednesday), under which the latter designated the hospital as a Global Centre of Excellence (GCOE) in trauma, joint replacement, and arthroscopy surgeries for training orthopaedic surgeons in Asia Pacific region. S. Rajasekaran, chairman, Department of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Spine Surgery at Ganga Hospital, said this is the first GCOE for trauma surgery in the world. The hospital was chosen as a GCOE for various factors, including the volume of trauma, joint replacement and arthroscopy surgeries performed and the expertise of its professionals, he added. According to the hospital, the partnership will offer a platform for surgeons at various stages of professional career for advancement of training and mentorship. It will cover basic surgical skills to very advanced robotic joint replacement surgeries. As many as 100 surgeons from Asia Pacific countries, including Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand will be trained under the initiative annually. Kanakavalli Shanmuganathan, Managing Director of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore; Yoo Jin Chey, Vice President, Johnson and Johnson MedTech, Asia Pacific; and Ambuj Chaturvedi, Director, Professional Education, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, India, were present at the event.
