Arizona Cardinals won't play starters vs. Las Vegas Raiders in preseason finale

Jonathan Gannon says the plan for the Raiders is similar to last weekend.
The Arizona Cardinals' final preseason game is Saturday night at State Farm Stadium against the Las Vegas Raiders. The big question surrounding the game is whether or not starters will play and, if so, for how long.
Head coach Jonathan Gannon addressed that on Thursday. After earlier in the week saying he would wait to see how the week goes to decide, he revealed on Thursday that the plan against the Raiders will be "similar to last week."
What does that mean?
It means, essentially, no starters. None of the starting offense played last weekend and only two players projected to start on defense — rookie cornerback Will Johnson and linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither — started last week. And Johnson and Davis-Gaither only played a handful of snaps.
Against the Broncos, quarterback Jacoby Brissett led the second-team offense for two possessions. We will see if he gets the start or if Clayton Tune goes the whole game.
Getting Saturday night off doesn't mean it is a vacation for the starters and key rotational guys, though.
While some coaches might say "the hay is in the barn" after the final practice for starters and those not playing in the preseason finale, Gannon prefers a mindset where "the hay is never in the barn until you kick it off."
"You have 48-hour prep, you have 24-hour prep, you have a walkthrough, you have a bunch of different meetings, you have psychological prep," he said Thursday. "What you're doing the week before the game, two days before the game, the day before the game, 20 minutes before the game. I don't think the hay is ever in the barn until they flip the coin."
So while the starters won't play, Gannon will expect them to follow through with game prep as if they were playing, and that is probably the smart way to do it.

Saints' Spencer Rattler appears to be slightly in lead for starting QB job in Week 1

Rattler will get the start in the Saints' final preseason game this weekend. The Arizona Cardinals more or less know all their starting jobs. They have other decisions to make for the 53-man roster. However, their Week 1 opponent, the New Orleans Saints, has a major decision still to make. They don't know who will be their starting quarterback to start the season when they host the Cardinals. One player seems to be slightly in the lead. That would be former Arizona prep star Spencer Rattler. Battling with rookie Tyler Shough, drafted in the second round this year, Rattler is starting in the Saints' preseason finale and has been taking more of the first-team snaps in practice. Rattler went 0-6 as a starter last season, his rookie year as a fifth-round pick. He completed only 57% of his passes and had four touchdown passes to five interceptions and was sacked 22 times. The fact that he leads the QB race slightly is bad news for the Saints. In this situation, they would clearly want Shough to win the job, even if showing the slightest upside. He has struggled. In either case, the Cardinals should be seen as a big favorite. Their roster is miles ahead of the Saints' in talent and achievement. Things could still change, but it looks like Rattler will be the Cardinals' first opposing quarterback of the year. 5 Arizona Cardinals players who could have trade value before roster cutdowns

Deals are happening around the NFL. Could the Cardinals get any value for players on their roster? As the roster cutdown deadline (next Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET) approaches, NFL teams are making deals, sending players to other teams who otherwise probably would not make their roster. It gives the sending team the opportunity to get something in return for a player rather than cutting him for nothing. For the receiving team, they can acquire a player without having to go through the waiver process and risk missing out on someone they want. So far, the Arizona Cardinals have not made any deals, though general manager Monti Ossenfort is no stranger to making cutdown deals. Last year, they traded former third-round pick Cam Thomas. The year before, they sent off linebacker Isaiah Simmons and tackle Josh Jones. They acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs that way. Could they wheel and deal again? Let's have a look at some players perhaps they could send elsewhere and get a late-round pick back for. These are not rumored deals or guys even on the trading block. They are players who might have some value for another team. OLB BJ Ojulari The Cardinals seem to have rebuilt their outside linebacker room without him. They have Josh Sweat, Zaven Collins, Baron Browning and added Jordan Burch in the draft. Ojulari is still technically rehabbing his knee more than a year after tearing his ACL, so he can't be traded while hurt, but should they activate him from PUP, perhaps he could be a guy another team would take a flyer on. CB Elijah Jones Jones was a third-round pick last year but didn't play as a rookie, and he hasn't looked particularly great in the preseason. He did make a very good play forcing a fumble at the goalline late in the last preseason game, he has length and elite athleticism, is young and also was a good special teams player in college. However, there doesn't seem to be room for him on the roster with the current group of cornerbacks. Another team looking for youth, length and athleticism perhaps would send a seventh-round pick for him. DL Dante Stills Stills is actually the team's most tradeable asset. With the injuries to Walter Nolen, Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols, all of whom have fully guaranteed salaries, Stills might be needed on the roster, but he is still just a backup. And with the emergence of undrafted rookie Elijah Simmons and P.J. Mustipher, Stills could get perhaps the most value. He is young, still cheap in his third year in the NFL and has been productive. While his effort can be inconsistent, he has eight sacks in two seasons. WR Greg Dortch Dortch appears to be WR4 in the offensive rotation now, which means he won't have as many opportunities. And if the Cardinals like Xaver Weaver enough to do what Dortch does (he could be WR4 as a gadget player and a punt returner), Dortch might have value for another team. S Joey Blount Blount is a stud special teams player, but the Cardinals drafted Kitan Crawford in the seventh round, and he has looked good in the preseason. Can they keep five safeties? That might be tough. Blount's special teams play could be valuable to someone. Raiders Linked to Trade for Former First-Round Pick to Fix Key Weakness

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Las Vegas Raiders lost a couple of key members of their secondary this offseason, as safety Tre'von Moehrig and cornerback Nate Hobbs both departed. That has left a rather significant hole in the Raiders' backfield, especially at the cornerback position where they will likely be employing rookie Darien Porter and struggling veteran Eric Stokes as their starters. More news: Vikings-Colts Trade Proposal Ships Towering WR to Minnesota Las Vegas could definitely stand to add another piece before the regular season, and Bleacher Report's Alex Kay has linked the Raiders to a rather interesting candidate: Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II. "Greg Newsome II fits the bill as a proven veteran with the potential to anchor a starting outside cornerback spot," Kay wrote. "While he struggled last year and has an expensive contract—he's due over $13 million in 2025 on his fifth-year option—the Raiders have the cap space to absorb that deal." Newsome has widely been viewed as a potential trade candidate for over a year now, and it was actually surprising that the Browns didn't move him at the deadline last November. Pete Carroll is introduced as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders during a news conference also introducing John Spytek as the team's general manager at the Las Vegas Raiders Headquarters/Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center on January 27, 2025 in Henderson, Nevada. More Photo by"There's still upside in this move for Vegas as well," Kay continued. "Newsome is a 2021 first-round pick who is still just 25 years old. If he shows out in Sin City, he could stick around on a long-term extension." Kay has the Raiders sending a seventh-round draft pick to Cleveland in return for Newsome. Newsome labored in 2024, registering just 27 tackles, an interception and five passes defended in 13 games while posting a paltry 52.2 overall rating at Pro Football Focus. However, the Northwestern product had shown plenty of promise in previous years, so he obviously has talent and would almost certainly represent an upgrade over Stokes, who is coming off of an awful season with the Packers. More news: Ravens Cut Candidate Somehow Named Potential Breakout Player Of course, now is not the best time for Cleveland to be entertaining Newsome trade discussions, as the Browns have already lost fellow cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. for 2025 with a ruptured Achilles. But if Cleveland does decide to make a move with Newsome, there is no doubt that Las Vegas would comprise a natural fit. For more on the Raiders and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
