Shimla farmers slam Modi Govt for yielding to US pressure on apple imports

Shimla, July 23 (UNI) Hundreds of apple growers and activists on Monday raised strong objections to the eviction of small farmers under the Forest Conservation Act (FCA) and the central government's decision to reduce import tariffs on foreign apples under alleged US pressure.
The meeting, addressed by former Himachal MLA and AFFI co-convener Rakesh Singha and CPI(M) legislator from Jammu and Kashmir Yusuf Tarigami, criticised the Indian government for 'succumbing to imperial diktats' that threaten the livelihoods of fruit growers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Tarigami accused the Modi government of bowing before the Trump administration's push to reduce import duties on apples from 50% to as low as 15–30%, calling it 'a betrayal of India's farmers.'
He warned that the decision would devastate local markets already suffering from low prices and high production costs. 'This is not just economic pressure; it's part of a larger imperial design to dominate developing nations by destroying their self-reliance,' he said, urging farmers across the country to unite for the nationwide protest scheduled on July 8–9.
Rakesh Singha, while highlighting the deepening agricultural crisis, said about 10 lakh families in Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir depend on apple and off-season vegetable farming.
'This sector is under threat not just from imports but also from the systematic eviction of farmers through encroachment drives under the FCA. While developed countries have ravaged their own ecosystems, they now force India to implement laws in the name of conservation that end up dispossessing its poorest cultivators,' he said.
Speakers emphasised that these policies are pushing hill farmers—who have long preserved nature through traditional land use—into destitution and are a direct continuation of anti-people, anti-farmer colonial mindsets masked as global cooperation.
During the meeting speaker also raised the issue of failing of Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government to press centre to increase import duty on the apple and promise made by Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi and Education Minister Rohit Thakur at Vidhan Sabha Apple growers rally during Budget session at Shimla.
"We apple growers are being ignored by Congress and BJP Government at centre as both couldn't keep promises" Convenor of AFFI Sohan Thakur said in the meet.
The meeting concluded with a call for mass mobilisation and policy reversal to protect local agriculture and uphold land rights of marginal farmers. UNI ML SSP

Pak extends airspace ban for Indian aircraft by another month

Islamabad: Pakistan authorities on Monday announced to extend the airspace ban on Indian aircraft for another month. The ban was initially imposed on April 23 for one month in the wake of tension between the two countries following the Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed at least 26 people. Later, it was extended for another month on May 23, when ties had deteriorated due to the four-day conflict as India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and destroyed terror infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan. According to a NOTAM, or Notice to Airmen, issued by the Pakistan Airports Authority, the ban has been extended from June 23 to July 23. 'Pakistan airspace not available for Indian registered aircraft and aircraft operated/owned or leased by Indian airlines/operators including military flights,' it said. India's strikes as part of Operation Sindoor triggered four days of intense clashes that ended with the cessation of on-ground hostilities after an understanding on stopping the military actions on May 10. However, the bilateral ties have not yet improved even when the ceasefire has been holding on.

Sinister forces want to divide India even on linguistic grounds: Dhankhar

New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday cautioned that India's rise would require careful treading as there are forces determined to make life difficult and want to divide the country on issues, even like language. He also called for the need to have a greater dialogue between political parties and asserted that political temperatures need to soothe. Addressing an event here to launch BJP leader Ram Madhav's book titled 'The New World 21st Century Global Order & India', he asserted that during Operation Sindoor, Indian forces spared civilians and only struck terror infrastructure. Referring to powers working against India, the vice president said, 'India's rise would require careful treading because there are forces that are determined to make our life difficult. There are forces within the country and outside. The sinister forces want to strike by dividing us even on issues, even like language.' He said no other country in the world can boast of language richness like India. Dhankhar said he was of the firm belief that India has no enemies inside but outside. Enemies within are small in number who are rooted to outside forces working against India's interests, he claimed. Former foreign secretary Shyam Saran, former Union minister Suresh Prabhu and Manish Tewari were also present at the event.
