Luke Humphries & Luke Littler learn opponents in first round of World Matchplay
Luke Humphries begins his defence of the Betfred World Matchplay crown with a booby-trap on the Golden Mile.
Cool Hand Luke became only the fourth player to rule at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool and win the PDC World Championship in the same year, after Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright, when he beat MVG 18-15 in a thrilling final 12 months ago. But world No.1 Humphries faces a major test in the first round against rising Dutch star Gian van Veen when the tournament opens on July 19.
And 18-year-old world champion Luke Littler would have an easier ride on the resort's famous Big One rollercoaster than his opening tie against Ryan Searle. Littler is the tournament favourite with the host sponsor.
With £200,000 to the winner, and the 2,000-plus venue sold out for every session since February, the World Matchplay is regarded as the biggest competition outside the annual fancy dress convention at Alexandra Palace.
Humphries, who won last month's US Darts Masters at New York's iconic Madison Square Garden, told Online Darts: 'I'm all about retaining titles - I didn't get to retain my world title but you want to go back-to-back and all eyes are on Blackpool.
'I feel like I'm one of those players who can turn it round if I'm playing badly, but to go into World Matchplay with a title under my belt in New York can only be good for my confidence. I've got to the stage now where I don't think too much into it - but I can't wait.'
Van Veen, up to No.22 in the order of merit and rising, was the PDC Youth world champion last year and reached the European Championship semi-finals two years ago.
The first round draw also includes a double-Dutch blockbuster between three-times champion Van Gerwen and 58-year-old legend Raymond van Barneveld.

Celtic have serious rivals for Jakob Breum after European club lodge higher bid than Hoops for key target
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC are facing a heavyweight rival for the services of Danish winger Jakob Breum in the form of Dutch outfit FC Twente. Dutch reports yesterday claimed that Go Ahead Eagles had knocked back a bid from the Hoops for the 21-year-old earlier this summer - with the Parkhead offer described as being "laughingly rejected". But Go Ahead Eagles technical director Jan Willem van Dop told Oosttribune yesterday that FC Twente were also in the run for Breum - and they had made a higher offer than the only OFFICIAL one received from Celtic. Revealing that discussions between FC Twente and Go Ahead Eagles had originally centred upon defender Joris Kramer, Van Dop said: "I spoke to Jan once this summer, and he asked about Joris Kramer. "I made it clear that we didn't want to lose Joris. "I think that's a good thing; you can start a fight at that point, but after my explanation, Jan immediately said: 'Well, Jan-Willem, we respect that, and that's it.' "Then he had a second question, and that was Jakob Breum. "I'd say that was certainly negotiable if the price was right, but we couldn't reach an agreement. "His proposal was already higher than the official offer ever made by Celtic." 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Luis Robert Jr. in spotlight as White Sox host Phillies
July 29 - Philadelphia Phillies reliever Tanner Banks shared a clubhouse with Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. as Chicago teammates for parts of three seasons. With Robert surging entering Tuesday night's game between visiting Philadelphia and Chicago and rumored to be on the trading block, might a reunion be in the works? Philadelphia was listed in a Monday report from The Athletic as one of three potential destinations should the White Sox trade Robert. Banks said the Phillies could benefit from the 27-year-old. "He's got a sneaky arm, very fast, power, the ability to hit for average," Banks told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "He's the complete package. He's young. He's very toolsy. He's not a guy I like to face. Even if he's having a down year, I don't like to face him. "It'll be interesting to see where he lands." While Robert has navigated durability issues for much of his six-season career, he has starred in July, batting .318 (14-for-44) with three home runs and 11 RBIs. He will turn 28 on Sunday. Robert delivered a go-ahead, two-run home run in the fourth inning Monday to help lift the White Sox to a 6-2 victory in the opener of the three-game interleague series. While Banks is not Phillies general manager Preston Mattingly, he suggested a change of scenery might offer Robert a boost. "Across the board in baseball, sometimes that's what it takes," Banks said. "Just a breath of fresh air." While the trade deadline looms on Thursday, Robert still is batting just .205 this year with the only major league organization he has known. Monday's homer against Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez gave him hits in 10 of his past 11 games, and he has 11 home runs and 43 RBIs for the season. He also contributed a diving catch of a J.T. Realmuto line drive in the fourth inning, showing increasing comfort after missing games Friday and Saturday against the Chicago Cubs with adductor soreness. "I thought that the ball was a lot farther," Robert said through a translator, "but at the end I realized that I was closer. I think I could have got the ball without diving, but I just did it anyways." Chicago is 7-3 since the All-Star break and benefiting from strong efforts from a core of rookies in addition to Robert. Rookie third baseman Colson Montgomery went 2-for-4 with three RBIs Monday, including a tying two-run blast in the third inning. Montgomery has homered in four of his past six games. The White Sox will aim to secure their third series victory since the All-Star break behind right-hander Jonathan Cannon (4-7, 4.48 ERA), who is set to face Philadelphia for the first time. Cannon is 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in four June starts covering 21 2/3 innings. He is coming off a no-decision on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays last Wednesday, when he yielded six runs (five earned) and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings with one walk and nine strikeouts in his team's 11-9 win. Left-hander Jesus Luzardo (8-5, 4.58) will get the call Tuesday for the Phillies in his first career appearance against the White Sox. Luzardo also struggled in a no-decision Wednesday, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings in a 9-8 loss to the Boston Red Sox while walking five and striking out seven. He is 1-1 with a 7.23 ERA in four June starts. --Field Level Media

Chelsea close to £35m deal for Ajax's Jorrel Hato and want RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons
Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Jorrel Hato from Ajax and have opened talks with RB Leipzig over a move for his Netherlands teammate, Xavi Simons. It is understood that personal terms have been agreed with Hato, a defender who has made more than 100 appearances for Ajax's first team despite only turning 19 in March. Negotiations with the Dutch side over a fee of around €40m (£35m) are believed to be in the final stages, with Enzo Maresca hoping to add to his options at left-back and in central defence. Hato, who in 2023 became the youngest player to captain Ajax aged 17 and made his senior international debut a few weeks later, is capable of filling both roles and is regarded as one of Europe's brightest prospects. He was part of the Netherlands Under-21 side that were defeated in the semi-finals of the European Championship in Slovakia last month and has won six senior caps. Chelsea, who have already signed Liam Delap, João Pedro and Jamie Gittens this summer, are also understood to be confident of agreeing a deal for Simons. The 22-year-old forward, who is capable of playing in several attacking roles, joined Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in January for €50m after two successful loan spells and it is expected that he could cost up to €70m. Simons has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich but is thought to prefer a move to the Premier League. Chelsea have already sanctioned the departures of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke and Djordje Petrovic and have agreed a £44m deal with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for João Felix.
