BCCI shifts IPL 2025 final to Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad instead of Kolkata's iconic Eden Gardens
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finalised Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium as hosts for the Indian Premier League (IPL) final on June 3 instead of Kolkata's Eden Gardens. The Eden Gardens was slated to host the IPL 2025 final according to the initial schedule on May 25.
However, with the tournament paused for a week due to India-Pakistan tensions, June 3 is the new date for the summit clash based in the revised IPL 2025 schedule. Ahmedabad will also to host Qualifier 2 on June 1.
The decision was taken during a BCCI meeting on Tuesday. Mullanpur in New Chandigarh will host the first two playoff matches. The main reason to shift the IPL 2025 final from Kolkata was purely based on the rainy forecast on June 3.
Going by the revised IPL 2025 schedule, the league stage ends on May 27. The Qualifier 1 and Eliminator will be played on May 29 and 30 respectively with Qualifier 2 slated for June 1.
Meanwhile, the flood-like situation in Bengaluru currently, has also forced the BCCI to shift Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Mya 23 to Lucknow's Ekana Stadium. Notably, the last match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was washed out between RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders on May 17.

Pataudi Medal of Excellence will honour leadership and legacy, says Sachin Tendulkar
London [UK], June 19 (ANI): Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar said it was a deeply meaningful moment for him to help preserve the Pataudi family's legacy in the storied India-England Test rivalry. Although the series will now be contested for the newly named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a separate honour, the Pataudi Medal of Excellence, will be awarded to the winning captain of the series. Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi had both captained India, and in their honour, the India-England series used to be called the Pataudi Trophy. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a joint initiative between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will now represent all future Test series between England and India. Previously, the series in England was played for the Pataudi Trophy and the series in India for the Anthony De Mello Trophy. Tendulkar revealed that he had proactively approached the ECB, the BCCI, and ICC Chairman Jay Shah to request that the Pataudi legacy should not be forgotten. He said that it was 'unanimously decided' that the Pataudi Medal of Excellence should be awarded to the winning captain of the series. The Master Blaster took the initiative to propose a tribute that would keep the Pataudi family's legacy alive even as the format evolved. 'I said, I'll come back to you on this and I spoke to Mr Jay Shah. I spoke to BCCI, ECB, and shared some ideas. Over a period of time, a few phone calls and we unanimously decided that the Pataudi Medal of Excellence should be awarded to the winning captain because he was known for leadership. This would be a good match,' he added. 'It was heartwarming to know that we've kept the legacy alive. It is important that it's remembered in a way, the way it's meant to be. I've always respected my seniors and I've always valued their contribution to our country,' Tendulkar said. He underlined the importance of honouring the foundation laid by legends of the past, saying, 'The foundation was built then and on that foundation, multiple things have happened over a period of time. Hopefully, what the newer generation constructs would be something that over a period of time, we'll look back and be proud of. We cannot forget our heroes.' 'All in all, was indeed a positive outcome. Not just the trophy named after the two of us, but also Mr. Pataudi's legacy is very much alive,' he noted. Speaking on having his name etched on the new trophy, Tendulkar said, 'I think when the Pataudi Trophy was retired, I was travelling... I heard about it, the decision by ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to retire that and start a new trophy altogether. So, the new trophy, the first time I got to know about it was, I think, just some time ago, last month, where ECB, BCCI decided to name this trophy after both of us. It's a nice recognition, I thought, of our contributions to our respective nations in Test cricket.' James Anderson, whose name is also there, is considered one of the finest exponents of swing bowling, took 704 Test wickets, the most by a fast bowler in the format. The Lancashire seamer ranks third on the all-time list, behind only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. Tendulkar, one of the most complete batters to have graced the game, remains the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15,921 runs. Post stampede, Karnataka drafts tough crowd-control bill
Bengaluru Stampede BENGALURU: Karnataka govt has drafted a sweeping crowd-management bill holding event organisers criminally and financially liable for stampedes and crowd surges at mass gatherings, weeks after 11 people were crushed to death and over 75 injured outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during RCB's IPL victory celebrations on June 4. The Karnataka Crowd Control (Managing Crowd at Events and Venues of Mass Gathering) Bill, 2025, accessed by TOI, proposes up to three years in jail and a Rs 5 lakh fine for commercial event organisers violating safety rules. Non-commercial organisers - including political and religious groups - face the same jail term or a smaller fine of Rs 5,000, or both. The bill mandates that event organisers apply for permission from the jurisdictional police station, which may alter the venue in case of risk or emergency. Local police and district magistrates - typically deputy commissioners - are granted wide-ranging powers to curb, cancel, or relocate events, and to intervene if there is even an apprehension of disorder, violence, or communal tension. Once issued, orders from district authorities will remain in force for 30 days, extendable to 60 days in special cases. In the event of a stampede, the bill mandates punishment for planners and anyone who aids or abets them. It also directs organisers to pay compensation to victims. If compensation isn't paid, govt may recover it as land revenue dues - including auctioning the organiser's property. The draft legislation will be released publicly in the coming days. If passed, it is expected to impact the way large gatherings are held in Karnataka, including political rallies.
