Minister assures funds to Ninasam for renovations at Heggodu
Minister for Kannada and Culture Shivaraj Tangadagi has promised funds to renovate Shivarama Karantha Rangamandira and other infrastructure development works of Ninasam in Heggodu, in Karnataka.
He made the announcement after inaugurating Ninasam theatre festival at Heggodu on May 11. Ninasam, which runs a theatre institute, has completed 75 years and has sought funds from the government of Karnataka to renovate its infrastructure in the village.
Mr. Tangadai appreciated the achievements of Ninasam over the decades. The organisation had produced talented artists. With minimum expenses, the institute has recorded impressive achievements. 'The State Government is committed to encouraging cultural activities. I will ensure the organisation gets sufficient funds in the current financial year,' he said.
K.V. Akshara, who runs activities at the institute, narrated the history of the institute and its activities. He said that the government of Karnataka had provided altogether ₹8.5 crore for its activities between 1980 and March 2025. The amount provided over 45 years was approximately one-third of the amount spent on the annual Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. 'Besides the State Government, the Central Government provided ₹5 crore so far. A few private foundations have contributed funds for the activities. So far, the theatre institute has trained more than 650 students, who have been active in different fields, including cinema and television media,' he said.
Mr. Akshara said the Shivarama Karnath Ranga Mandira was built in 1978 at a cost of ₹85,000. 'The time has come to renovate the structure. To change the roof alone, ₹75 lakh is required. We submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in 2024, the year when Ninansam completed 75 years. We are requesting funds to continue the activities,' he said.
Sagar MLA Belur Gopala Krishna said that the contribution of K.V. Subbanna, the founder of Ninasam, to Kannthe Kannada literary world and theatre had been immense. He founded the organisation in a village, and brought intellectuals and theatre personalities from different parts of the world. The institute requires funds to continue its activities. 'I will ensure the institute gets sufficient funds from the government,' he added.
Ninasam executive committee president Siddhartha Bhat and Karnataka Bhovi Development Corporation president Ravikumar were present.
Show delayed
A play based on Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and her Children was staged on the first day of the five-day festival on May 11. The play has been directed by M. Ganesh. But, the show was delayed.
The show, as part of the Ninasam theatre festival, was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., but was delayed by more than one hour and 15 minutes.
Minister for Kannada and Culture Shivaraj Tangadagi was scheduled to inaugurate the festival at 5 p.m. However, he reached the venue at 7 p.m. The inaugural ceremony ended at 8.15 p.m., delaying the show.
The institute is known to follow a strict time schedule while organising theatre events. Theatre-lovers from many distant places, including Shivamogga, Sagar and many nearby villages, visit Heggodu to watch the plays. Some of them were seen expressing their disappointment at the delay. They said a delay was seldom experienced at Heggodu.

Every theatre must screen a Bengali film daily at prime time: State government
The West Bengal government passed an order on Wednesday (August 13, 2025), mandating the screening of at least one Bengali-language film daily in prime time slots in every theatre and multiplex in the State. The Trinamool Congress, which is in power, has stepped up its Bhasha Andolan (language movement) as part of a push to prioritise the Bengali language and culture. This comes as Bengali-speaking migrants have been facing physical attacks and arrest across the country. 'In every cinema hall and on all screens (each screen) of every multiplex and theatre in this State, 365 prime-time shows of Bengali films shall mandatorily be screened throughout the year with at least one Bengali show per day,' the order by the State Government's Information and Cultural Affairs Department reads. 'Earlier, only 120 Bengali film screenings were mandatory per year. Under the new rules, Bengali films must be screened 365 days a year on every screen during prime time slots,' West Bengal Minister Aroop Biswas said on Wednesday (August 13, 2025), referring to the August 13 notification. Prime time shows refer to screenings held between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., the order dated August 13 clarifies. Rules to be amended According to the order, necessary amendments would also be made to the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation of Public Exhibitions) Rules, 1956, in due course. The legislation pertains to the public screening of motion pictures in the State. The order further states that this move aims to encourage the Bengali film industry, and that the issue of mandatory screenings of Bengali films by cinema halls and multiplexes of this State had been under active consideration by the State Government. Industry welcomes the order President of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, Swarup Biswas, called the notification 'historic' on Wednesday. 'This is a historic move by the government as it has now expanded the perimeters of the public exhibition of Bengali language films. This will ensure there are at least 365 screenings of Bengali films across all theatres and multiplexes in the State, in a fitting response to those who criticised the declining number of Bengali film productions year on year,' Mr. Biswas said. For context, the number of Bengali language films released in 2024 had drastically reduced to under 40, from around 134 films in 2023. 'I wholeheartedly welcome the order, but we need to wait and see how it unfolds. Mandating prime time screenings will help boost sales outside the supply-demand model of distribution networks and offer some protection to those making films in the Bengali language,' critically acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Goutam Ghose told The Hindu. He added that with the inception of multiplexes and the growing popularity of Bollywood films, the distribution of and revenue from Bengali language films had taken a hit. 'The film exhibition business in the State often preferred Bollywood films for prime time slots, considering their demand. The challenge for us was growing and sustaining a dedicated regional audience for Bengali films, like we see in the southern States. This order will hopefully help us do that. It will also challenge us to make films with better content and technology,' he added. Long awaited Mr. Ghose further said that talks had been ongoing for the last two decades to introduce a mandate like this. 'It is indeed an encouraging order. Talks and discussions have ultimately had some effect. I congratulate all who were involved in getting this order passed and the State government for the positive step it has taken in exhibiting Bangla, or Bengali language films,' renowned Bengali filmmaker Sudeshna Roy said. Meanwhile, director and film producer Soumyajit Majumder said that the order is a welcome change but also a late intervention. 'Most States already have a regional film policy. Marathi films, for example, have had this backing from the Maharashtra government regarding prime time slots. As a producer, I think well-made Bengali films will get a fairer chance to survive the box office and get noticed by more people,' he said. Mr Majumder also highlighted that this step might also benefit independent Bengali language movies that lack big marketing budgets. 'These films can rely more on word-of-mouth publicity and will not be ousted immediately, citing non-performance. For the Bengali language and culture to survive in this globalised world, Bengali cinema will play an integral role. It shouldn't be only about business,' he added.

WCC lauds woman actors for fighting injustices in industry
KOCHI: Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has lauded actors Urvashi and Swetha Menon and producer Sandra Thomas for 'fighting injustices' in the Malayalam film industry, even as it condemned statements by Adoor Gopalakrishnan on women and Dalit filmmakers. 'We congratulate Urvashi and Sandra Thomas for speaking up and expressing their opinions. Urvashi is protesting against the Central government for the way film awards were determined. We also condemn the stance taken against women who are coming to the forefront of film organisations, including Swetha Menon. All of them are symbols of tireless women who do not remain silent in the struggles they face in their careers and personal lives but rather move forward strongly,' stated WCC. The collective also criticised Adoor for his statements about new women and Dalit filmmakers at the film policy conclave held in Thiruvananthapuram last week. 'Through his commentsalit directors in Malayalam cinema, Adoor Gopalakrishnan has once again revealed his upper-caste, caste, and gender-based perspective to the public. WCC strongly condemns Adoor's approach and stance,' the statement said.

Udaipur Files' is based on the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Kumar. Kanhaiya Kumar was killed for allegedly sharing a social media post in support of Indian politician and Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose comments led to the 2022 Muhammad remarks controversy. Upon the film's release, Kanhaiya Lal's son Yash Sahu said: 'This movie, which is being released today, Udaipur Files, is based on the incident of my father, which happened on 28th June, 2022. How my father was killed under terrorist conspiracy. These people were connected to Pakistan.' 'This is also called NIA's chart sheet. So, all that has been shown in this movie. And there is a message in this movie that such incidents happen in the country, they can be brought in front of the country through a movie, through a cinematic graphic.' He said that his family is still fighting for justice. 'I have gone to many cases, but in this case, I still did not see anything that these criminals are being punished for. A very long time has passed,' he added. 'Three years is a very long time. Even now, the criminal is still in jail. He has not been punished. The assailants had also released a video claiming that the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma. Javed, who is one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, had moved to the Supreme Court against the release of the film. Regarding the film's release, Kanhaiya Lal's wife Jasoda Sahu shared that when the film was initially stalled, she herself wrote a letter to the Prime Minister appealing for permission to release it. She said: 'This film is a true reflection of our family's pain and struggle, and the entire country should see it.' The film was initially slated for release on July 11, 2025. However, the film faced many delays due to censorship and legal troubles.
