Leeds-born Jackson, a former defender who mainly played in England's lower leagues, has spent the past three years Down Under after previously bossing MK Dons.
He has won an A-League Premiership and Championship as well as the Asian Champions League Two title.
In the 2023-24 season Jackson and the Mariners won a Double, emulating ex-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou who achieved the feat with Brisbane Road in 2010-11.
Jackson, 47, honed his coaching talents working at Leeds United, where he came through the ranks as a player.
After starting out as the Elland Road club's Under-15s boss he quickly moved his way up the ranks.
He had experience working under Marcelo Bielsa before being promoted to first team coach by successor Jesse Marsch.
Jackson was appointed MK Dons boss in December 2022 with the side sitting 22nd in League One but was sacked just six months later when they were relegated.
Well have been searching for a new manager since German Wimmer stunned the club by quitting last month after just 12 games in charge.
He claimed his reason for leaving was down to family matters before being appointed as boss of SSV Jahn Regensburg in his homeland.
The likes of Tony Docherty and Robbie Neilson have also been linked with the Fir Park vacancy.
More to follow.

Cadillac told signing F1 star would be a huge mistake – 'No reason to go for him'
New Formula 1 team Cadillac have yet to confirm the two drivers who will race for them in their debut season in 2026, with Mick Schumacher among several linked with the outfit Cadillac have been warned against signing Mick Schumacher to race for their new Formula 1 outfit. The German racer is one of many who have been linked with the new team which will join the grid to race for the first time next year. Their entry creates two more race seats for drivers to fight for, meaning many who have been left without a place on the grid this year have shown particular interest. And Schumacher is one of them, the 26-year-old desperate to revive his F1 career. He last raced in the sport in 2022, when he was axed by Haas after just two seasons. He started 43 races during that period but managed to score just 12 points overall, a return not enough to convince then-team principal Guenther Steiner to offer a new deal. Schumacher, son of seven-time F1 champion Michael, immediately joined his father's old Mercedes team as a reserve. Last year, also signed with Alpine to race in the World Endurance Championship and has enjoyed three podium finishes to date. He hopes to use his WEC exploits to earn a return to F1 one day, where he feels he has unfinished business. And he has been particularly vocal about his chances of landing a seat with Cadillac who have been in no rush to make a decision over their drivers. In an interview last month with Brazilian media, Schumacher said "talks are taking place" with the outfit, which he said had been going in a "very positive" direction. He added: "It is an incredible project, a great story. So it is something I feel honoured to be part of, negotiating, and it is a great position to be in." Whether or not Schumacher manages to land on of those two coveted spots remains to be seen. But former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has made clear his belief that Cadillac would be making a mistake if they pick the German. The 1997 title winner said: "Mick Schumacher had a hard time when he was at Haas. He has not an experienced driver either. There is no reason to go for him." The other front-runner for a seat is Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas, who has won 10 F1 races in his career and would be a much better choice as far as Villeneuve is concerned. The Canadian added: "Bottas has a lot of experience and he has shown that he can win races. And he has been with an amazing team in Mercedes, so those are good attributes to have. It is hard to judge his Sauber years. I do not think there was any hunger there."

Watch as Kyogo scores first goal since leaving Celtic
The striker joined Rennes in January, although after failing to net in six appearances for the French club amid managerial change, he signed for Birmingham City this summer. They welcomed Walsall to St Andrew's this evening in the EFL Cup, and Furuhashi opened the scoring five minutes in, tapping in from close range after a defensive error. His first goal in royal blue 🤩 🇯🇵 Let's go, @Kyogo_Furuhashi! — Birmingham City FC (@BCFC) August 13, 2025 Furuhashi scored 85 times across 165 Celtic appearances. Read more: He is currently at Birmingham with his ex-Parkhead colleague and fellow countryman, Tomoki Iwata. Chris Davies, Brendan Rodgers' former assistant, is in charge of the club. They are aiming for promotion to the Premier League after winning English League One last season. Furuhashi's goals could be key to their success this campaign. The centre-forward will be hoping his strike this evening is the first of many in Birmingham colours. Recently opening up about his struggles at Rennes, he said: "I found the French league more physical than in Scotland with Celtic. "The manager told me I had to adapt and find a way around it. "But when I am frustrated in Japan, I have people I can talk to. In France, there was no one. "I didn't have an interpreter like I was used to and that didn't help either. I studied French for six months, but I don't think I got anywhere with it. "It's so important for me to be playing games now with the World Cup less than a year away. It will come around quickly."
