Gobind pushes for ethical AI governance, Asean collaboration at Unesco forum
BANGKOK, June 26 — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted the nation's initiatives in advancing responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance and fostering regional collaboration during the 3rd Unesco Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (GFEAI 2025) on Wednesday.
Gobind emphasised Malaysia's commitment to promoting responsible AI governance, encouraging regional partnerships, and ensuring that the country's progress aligns with globally recognised ethical standards.
'As AI continues to evolve, meaningful dialogue and international cooperation are essential for building a future that is inclusive, secure, and beneficial to all,' he said during the high-level ministerial panel titled Fostering Global Dialogue on AI for a Collective Future at the Unesco GFEAI 2025.
Earlier, Gobind participated in a panel discussion titled 'From Readiness Assessment to Enhanced Institutional, Technical and Human Capacities in AI.'
During the session, he highlighted Malaysia's achievements, including strengthening nationwide connectivity, adopting a multi-faceted approach to infrastructure, talent, and trust development, and introducing data centre regulations to position Malaysia as a regional hub for data infrastructure.
'I am confident that many more commendable milestones lie ahead. That said, I firmly believe that the next phase of advancement must be underpinned by robust and forward-looking policies and regulations.
'At the Ministry of Digital, our commitment to driving this agenda remains unwavering. We will continue to strive for a digital future that is inclusive, secure, and sustainable,' he said.
Later in the day, Gobind held a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Prasert Jantararuangtong, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister.
Gobind said their discussion centred on opportunities for regional collaboration in digital technology and AI, with a particular focus on transformative applications in the agriculture, health, and transport sectors.
'Building on the relationship first established during ADGMIN, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to Asean cooperation in digital technologies and AI. As Malaysia assumes the 2025 Asean Chair, I extended invitations to the upcoming Asean AI Summit in August and the SMART City Expo in September, both of which will be held in Kuala Lumpur,' he said.
Gobind added that both ministers also addressed the urgent need for joint action on cybersecurity threats in an increasingly AI-driven digital landscape. — Bernama

‘Don't chase New York, London': Anwar says RM4b Kota Madani to guide Malaysia's city redevelopment plans
PUTRAJAYA, June 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the Kota Madani megaproject in Putrajaya is intended to serve as a national benchmark for urban redevelopment, prioritising liveability and public interest over profit. Anwar said the RM4 billion project in Presint 19 was not merely about constructing buildings but about creating a model city that values safety, efficiency and human-centred development. 'We don't have to chase after New York or London to be seen as a modern city. Those cities have their own flaws,' he said at the project's groundbreaking ceremony. 'I want Kota Madani to be an example of redevelopment of cities in our country. State governments need to look into this approach, not just leaving themselves at the whims of developers. 'The government must spearhead planned development. Developers may give their opinion, but the final decision cannot solely be based on profits,' he added. He added that the development would include pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, schools, places of worship and community halls to help reduce financial burdens on families. 'Imagine if parents with kids just needed to send them to schools or kindergarten by just walking. This is the Kota Madani we have dreamed of — safe, efficient and filled with human values,' he said. Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the project would significantly ease the cost of living for civil servants by providing access to a wide range of public amenities. She noted that many currently rent homes outside the administrative capital, incurring high monthly expenses due to daily commutes. 'With Kota Madani, civil servants will be able to live in government quarters with existing public amenities near their place of employment with minimal costs. 'Schools will be within walking distance and the area will be safe. They need not worry. I estimate civil servants can save up to RM1,000 a month and they can use that money for something more beneficial,' she said. Occupying 41.28 hectares, Kota Madani will offer 10,000 high-density vertical residential units to house more than 30,000 residents. The project will be developed by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) under a public-private partnership model using the build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT) concept, with no government allocation required during the initial phase. Its design will incorporate artificial intelligence, high-efficiency digital infrastructure and a green mobility system — laying the foundation for a low-carbon city aligned with principles of sustainability, well-being and public safety. Planned facilities include Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, schools, health clinics, police and fire stations, a mosque, financial institutions, and culturally inspired architecture to preserve heritage. The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin this September and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Former Dewan Negara deputy president pleads not guilty to bribery charge involving luxury car
MELAKA, June 26 — Former Dewan Negara deputy president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today to a charge of accepting a luxury car as a bribe in 2015. He entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan. According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Ali is accused of corruptly accepting a Range Rover Sport from a company director as an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. The alleged offence took place at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah, in June 2015. The charge, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to maintain the same bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18 - namely RM60,000 bail with one surety, surrender of the accused's passport, and a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses. He also applied for the case previously filed in Shah Alam to be transferred to Ayer Keroh so that both matters could be heard together. Defence counsel Md Yunos Shariff raised no objection, and the court fixed August 14 for mention. On June 18, Mohamad Ali had claimed trial in the Shah Alam Sessions Court to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to the same reclamation project. — Bernama
