BRASILIA : Brazil's government has asked US technology giant Meta to rid its platforms of chatbots that mimic children and can make sexually suggestive remarks, the attorney-general's office (AGU) announced today.
Users of Meta's platforms, which include Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, can create and customise such bots using the company's generative artificial intelligence, AI Studio.
The AGU said in a statement that Meta must 'immediately' remove 'artificial intelligence robots that simulate profiles with childlike language and appearance and are allowed to engage in sexually explicit dialogue'.
It denounced the 'proliferation' of such bots in what it called an 'extrajudicial notice' sent to Meta last week, adding that they 'promote the eroticisation of children.'
The document cited several examples of sexually charged conversations with bots pretending to be minors.
The AGU's request does not include sanctions, but the agency said it had reminded Meta that online platforms in Brazil must take down illicit content created by their users, even without a court order.
It comes at a time of outrage in the South American nation over a case of alleged child sexual exploitation by Hytalo Santos, a well-known influencer who posted content on Instagram featuring partially naked minors taking part in suggestive dances.
Santos was arrested last week as part of an investigation into 'exposure with sexual connotations' to adolescents, and his Instagram account is no longer available.
In June, Brazil's Supreme Court voted to require tech companies to assume greater responsibility for user-generated content.

Grab users in Singapore shocked by fares of over S$1,000 due to display glitch
Several social media users shared screenshots of the drastic jump in Grab fares. - TAN KWEE YONG/FACEBOOK, SINGAPORT ATRIUM SALE/FACEBOOK SINGAPORE: Some Grab customers in Singapore were taken aback on Wednesday (Aug 20) after the ride-hailing mobile app briefly displayed fares that exceeded S$1,000 due to a glitch. The unusually high fares, even for short trips within the country, were visible for about 20 minutes from around noon. In response to queries, a Grab spokesperson said the price spike was the result of a temporary display error. 'We encountered a temporary system issue that led to abnormally high prices being wrongly displayed in our app,' the company said in a statement. 'The issue has been resolved, and the app is now functioning as usual. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused.' Bloomberg reported that users in neighbouring Malaysia also experienced similar pricing anomalies. Several users took to social media to share screenshots of the drastic jump in fares. Among them was Facebook user Tan Kwee Yong, who wrote: 'I never knew (travelling) from my military camp to another military camp (would) cost a quarter of my pay.' His fare was listed as $1,511.80. In another screenshot, the cost of a ride from Tampines to Kinex mall in Katong was listed as $1,012. One user commented: 'I wonder if anyone checked the fare or simply clicked on book.' Grab's system is designed such that bookings with unusually high fares would not have typically gone through. However, the company is in the midst of doing checks, and those who were charged the high fares would be compensated. Grab, which is backed by US-based Uber Technologies, is the dominant ride-hailing operator in Singapore, as well as other markets in the region, including Malaysia and Thailand. Uber exited South-East Asia in 2018, transferring its operations to Grab in exchange for a stake in the company. Grab now faces stiff competition from Indonesia's GoTo Group and several smaller rivals in the region. - The Straits Times/ANN

Doctor duped of RM468,000 in online investment scam
KUANTAN: A 55-year-old woman doctor lost RM468,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam advertised on Facebook in May. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim was attracted by the advertisement and was later contacted by an individual posing as a representative of Nikko Asset Management, allegedly based in Singapore. "The suspect promised returns of 80% to 128% within a month. Convinced by the offer, the victim made 14 transfers into four different accounts between June 17 and Aug 6, using her Employees Provident Fund savings," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 20). Yahaya said the victim was then shown falsified profit statements through pictures sent by the suspect, indicating that her investment had grown to RM800,000, including the capital. "The victim was subsequently asked to pay another RM152,725, supposedly for tax purposes, before she could withdraw the profits. She became suspicious and refused to comply," he said. According to Yahaya, checks revealed that Nikko Asset Management is a legitimate investment management company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with branches worldwide, but its name had been misused by scammers in this case. The victim lodged a report at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. - Bernama
