Remarkable Women: Ruth Thompson

Ruth Thompson is no stranger to JET 24 viewers.
We see her every week in our Jet Pet segments, highlighting shelter animals and usually making us laugh.
Unfortunately, she's also brought us heartbreaking stories of animal abuse and neglect.
Thompsom started the Association for Needy and Neglected Animals, or the ANNA Shelter, in June 2004.
The nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter has become a vital resource in our community.
'When I started the shelter, I literally wanted something really small, something I could do myself literally. That obviously has not happened, 39 employees later. We handle about 10,000 animals a year,' said Thompson.
For the past 21 years, Thompson has worked tirelessly to rescue unwanted, abused, neglected and stray animals, all while being a full-time mom, starting a successful for-profit business she started in her early 20s and helping her family at Rosebud Flower Shop.
'I try to stress this to my daughter, you know, to get up in the morning and feel good about what you do, to have a purpose,' said Thompson.
And despite the physical, mental and emotional toll running an animal shelter can have, Thompson said she wouldn't change a thing.
'I think that's the ticket. Find what you're passionate about,' she said.
Ruth Thompson — Truly a remarkable woman.

2 dead after helicopter strikes power line and crashes into barge on Mississippi River

Two people were killed Thursday after the helicopter they were on board struck power lines crossing the Mississippi River and crashed onto a barge below, police said. The accident happened around 11 a.m. as the crew of the helicopter was conducting work on the power lines that cross the river in the area of St. Charles County, Missouri, State Patrol Cpl. Dallas Thompson told reporters. The helicopter crashed onto a barge in the river and there was a fire, but it was quickly extinguished, he said. No one on the barge was hurt. First responders evacuated the vicinity because the crash had sent a power line into the water, but it was later found that the wire was not live, Thompson said. The crash happened near Alton, Illinois, which is across the Missouri state line and the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, officials said. Wallace Maier was conducting a fishing charter in the area when the crash occurred, and he told NBC affiliate KSDK of St. Louis that it happened fast. "As soon as it touched it, there was just an explosion. It was just gone," Maier told the station. Utility company Ameren said that a contractor and its subcontractor were repairing and replacing tower lighting and marker balls on transmission lines in Madison County, Illinois, when the accident occurred. "We are saddened about today's tragic incident. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the victims' families and colleagues," a company spokesperson said in a statement. "We will cooperate with the investigation" The National Transportation Safety Board said that it will investigate the crash. It said the helicopter involved was a Hughes 369D.

Here's where Goose, the 'elusive' monitor lizard on the loose in Mass., was spotted

A water monitor lizard that escaped from a Webster home last week was spotted in a Connecticut town, about five miles from home, officials in the town of Thompson said Friday, July 25. Webster Animal Control searched the area off Upper Gore Road in Webster on Friday, July 18, according to an updated statement. Officers called off the search and asked for the public's help in finding Goose, the five-foot-long, illegally owned reptile. Webster Police Deputy Chief Gordon Wentworth told MassLive that the lizard was 'very elusive.' Cooler evenings this week put Goose at risk, but 'he should (hopefully) be trying to seek out warmth and sun,' Webster Animal Control stated on Tuesday. Then, on July 25, Goose was spotted walking in the area of Little Pond on Wilsonville and Thompson roads. The Connecticut town is about five miles south of Webster. Thompson town officials ask that anyone who sees Goose should call Webster Animal Control at 508-943-1212, or Connecticut State Police at 860-779-4900. Florida Python Challenge 2025: More than 900 hunters competed for $25,000 in prizes

With Florida's annual Burmese python hunt wrapping up Sunday (July 20) at 5 p.m., the next phase of the 2025 competition will be the announcement of the winners, including the $10,000 grand prize recipient for most pythons caught. According to Lisa Thompson, spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this year's winners will be announced "in a few weeks after all data has been processed and verified." A total of $25,000 in prize money will be distributed to winners in three categories − professional, novice and military. This year's competition started at 12:01 a.m. on July 11 at eight competition locations. "And we had 30 states represented (including Florida)," Thompson said. Florida Python Challenge 2024 results. 195 pythons removed Last year, according to FWC, 195 Burmese pythons were removed. Ronald Kiger (20 Burmese pythons removed) was the 2024 Grand Prize winner. How serious is the python problem in Florida? Burmese pythons have wrought destruction in the Florida Everglades. They've contributed to the decline of small mammals including raccoons, opossums, bobcats, foxes, marsh rabbits and cottontail rabbits. A recent study revealed that Burmese pythons can eat prey much larger than previously reported. Scientists observed a Burmese python swallowing a 77-pound white-tailed deer, nearly 70 percent of the snake's mass. What is the Florida Python Challenge? The Florida Python Challenge is a ten-day competition encouraging participants to remove Burmese pythons from seven Commission-managed lands in South Florida. According to FWC, the event is held to raise public awareness about invasive species in Florida, like Burmese pythons, that are a threat to the Everglades ecosystem. Where was the 2025 Florida Python Challenge held? The Florida Python Challenge took place at these eight competition locations:Big Cypress Wildlife Management AreaEverglades National Park Florida Python Challenge 2025 prizes Along with the$10,000 top prize for the most pythons caught, this is the breakdown by category: Professional Category Most Pythons Professional Category $2,500 Most Pythons Professional Category Runner Up $1,500 Longest Python Professional Category $1,000 Novice Category Most Pythons Novice Category $2,500 Most Pythons Novice Category Runner Up $1,500 Longest Python Novice Category $1,000 Military Category Most Pythons Military Category $2,500 Most Pythons Military Category Runner Up $1,500 Longest Python Military Category $1,000 Burmese pythons in Florida must be humanely killed If you catch a Burmese python in Florida, you must humanely kill the snake where it was captured. Transporting live pythons is not allowed. Two steps must be completed to kill a python humanely: Step 1 - Target the brain: The application of the tool should immediately result in the python losing consciousness. Draw an imaginary line between each eye and opposite jawbone. The brain is located where the two lines intersect. Apply the tool to the target area (brain) to achieve an immediate loss of consciousness. Step 2- Destroy the brain: Immediately and substantially destroy the python's brain by manually 'pithing' which prevents the python from regaining consciousness. How many Burmese pythons are in Florida? "Burmese pythons are hard to find due to their cryptic coloration and secretive behaviors, and their low detection probability is a major challenge to effective python control and research," according to Florida Fish and Wildlife. However, conservative estimates by the USGS put the Burmese python population in the Florida Everglades region in the tens of thousands. Can Burmese pythons ever be removed from Florida? Because Burmese pythons are distributed across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, including all of Everglades National Park and across the southern coast, the chances of completely eliminating the snake from Florida is low. Controlling their numbers and preventing their spread out of the area are critical goals for conservation efforts and land managers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
