Kenya receives 17 mountain bongo antelopes from the US
The KWS said this was due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal activities, disease, and small fragmented populations.Tourism Minister Rebecca Miano described the arrival of the bongos at the country's main airport on Sunday night as "emotional and so cool", and a benefit for Kenya's tourism and conservation sectors.The animals were taken to wildlife sanctuaries in Meru county near Mount Kenya, where they will be nurtured before they are gradually introduced to their natural habitat.Ms Miano said the mountain bongo, "a species originally only found in Kenya, has suffered untold grief over the decades... dwindling to alarming proportions".She said the plan was to grow the population to 700 by 2050.The mountain bongo, which has a bright chestnut-red colour with narrow white stripes, is the largest African forest-dwelling antelope, according to the KWS.It is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a Critically Endangered species - with more individuals in captivity than in the wild.
The first repatriation to Kenya was in 2004 when 18 mountain bongos were flown into the country.KWS director-general Erastus Kanga said Kenya was expecting another batch of the mountain bongos from zoos in Europe in the next three months.From captivity, the bongos have to go through a series of adaptation phases for them to build the immunity needed to survive in the wild.In 2022, the head of conservancy at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) told a Kenyan TV station that some of the bongos repatriated in 2004 had successfully been integrated into the wild and had started breeding.The MKWC official, Robert Aruho, however, said that other had died from tick-borne diseases, adding that building immunity takes time.

The one kitchen item that can 'permanently' remove patio weeds within a day
Pesky weeds can get between the cracks of your patio and driveway - but there's a simple solution. Weeds are a near-permanent problem for many homeowners. The pesky plants seemingly get everywhere in our outdoor spaces and can be hard to remove. This is especially true on our patio and driveway, where the weeds shoot up between the bricks and are seemingly impossible to root out. But while the battle against the unwanted undergrowth may feel neverending, an expert has revealed a simple hack for getting rid of them - and it won't cost you much. Many people turn to white vinegar to remove weeds from patios and driveways but according to Instagram user @thatmamarealtor, there is another common kitchen item you can use. The home expert, also known as Jessica Nakamura, recommends using baking soda. And it is less likely to damage plants and lawns than white vinegar, The Express reports. Demonstrating her hack on Instagram, she posted a reel captioned: 'This is an easy way to permanently get rid of the weeds between your patio stones.' In the clip, she says: 'If you need a simple way to get rid of the weeds between your patio stones try using baking soda.' She can be seen pouring lots of baking soda along the length of her patio, covering it in the white powder. She then shows off big bag to the camera, saying: "I got this 50lb bag from a farm supply store for just $30 [£22]." Next, she advises: "Sweep it into all the cracks and then wet it with a garden hose." In the clip, Jessica can be seen using a brush to make sure the baking soda goes into every crevice, before it cuts to her hosing down the bricks. She then shows the effect it had in just one day, saying: "After 24 hours, your weeds will look like this and come out so easily." During this voiceover, the video cuts to a close-up of the patio, where weeds can be seen looking dried out and dead in the cracks between the bricks. The clip ends with Jessica easily pulling out the dead weeds as she insists that "they won't grow back." Some people were sceptical about using the product on their driveway weeds, but Jessica returned to the comments section after several weeks to update her followers. Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is super effective at eliminating weeds due to its high salt content. Whe weeds are overloaded with salt, they cannot survive. They become dehydrated and dry out, eventually dying and being unable to re-grow. Once the pesky plants have fully dried above ground, the whole weed should be able to be pulled out from the root. This makes it much harder for the weed to return to your outdoor space. Increased salt levels in the soil can pose a problem for non-weed plants in much the same way. But by doing a simple flush of water - or if there is heavy rainfall - the remnants of the baking soda can be easily washed away.

'Amazing' people help get poorly dog to vets during gridlock traffic
Evie Roberts was travelling on the A55 in Flintshire last Saturday afternoon to the vets for her four-year-old dachshund, Crumble, to get emergency spinal surgery. Evie's dog, Crumble (Image: UGC) She explained: "At about 4.30pm last Saturday I was travelling to Liverpool Small Animal Teaching Hospital with my very poorly dog for emergency surgery, and ended up diverted off the A55 at Caerwys and down a back lane towards the coast road, when the road became totally gridlocked. "Trying not to panic, we moved aside to wait for the traffic to clear and in passing, we mentioned where we were trying to get to, to another person stuck in the traffic. "Around 10 minutes later this amazing man came and said to us that everyone had moved aside for us to get through so we could get her the help she needed. He had been all the way down the queue and explained to everyone about our situation. "We did get there and she is now home and on the mend after emergency spinal surgery." Crumble is now back home resting after her surgery. (Image: UGC) Evie, who runs the Emporium second hand art and craft shop in Llandudno Junction, wanted to publicaly thank the man and all those who moved aside to let her pass. She said: "I just want to say a huge thank you to the people in that moment who did that for us, complete strangers, and to anyone on that road that moved and waited for us. "It was such a beautifully kind thing to do and I cried as I drove off whilst everyone waved us on our way. Amazing humans in a hot and busy situation. Thank you again." Evie had posted on an A55 group on Facebook to thank people, and has been blown away by the reaction. "It's had such a positive response it's had on Facebook, way more than I'd expected," she said. "I just wanted people to know that there is kindness in the world. And just not to stop believing in it. "It's so easy to see and hear the negatives all the time and think that that's all there is, but this proves different."

Huge blaze rips through building as homes evacuated and residents urged to ‘keep windows and doors shut'

Emergency crews rushed to attend the building fire in Clacton, Essex, in the early hours this morning. Teams from seven local fire stations, including Weeley, Colchester and Chelmsford, were scrambled to the scene at around 12.35am. Essex Fire Brigade confirmed the building was still fully alight just before 5am. Incident Commander Nick Singleton said: "Crews have worked hard to surround the fire. "We will be remaining here for a significant time during the day to make sure the fire is fully extinguished. "Jackson Road, Penfold Road and Agate Road will be shut and experience disruption while our crews remain at the incident. "Thank you to our emergency services colleagues who have helped us safety evacuate nearby residents." Premier Inn Clacton and Tendring District Council have set up a refuge centre for affected residents. Essex Police were also called to the scene to assist firefighters as they tackled the blaze. A spokesperson for the force said: "We are supporting our colleagues at the fire service who are leading on this incident.
