Brandon Woodruff's gem propels Brewers to 11th straight win, 6-0 over Mariners
SEATTLE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff tossed six innings of two-hit ball and the Milwaukee Brewers won their 11th straight, 6-0 over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
Woodruff (2-0) needed just 62 pitches to make it through his third start of the season, giving up two singles and walking none. The right-hander missed all of the 2024 season because of surgery on his pitching shoulder, and has been brought along slowly by the Brewers since his debut on July 6.
George Kirby dueled with Woodruff early, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. But the Brewers tagged Kirby (4-5) for four runs in the sixth while sending eight men to the plate.
The Brewers scored twice in the eighth off Mariners left-hander Brandyn Garcia, who made his major league debut after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day. Milwaukee (60-40) joined Detroit as the only teams to reach 60 wins so far this season. Key moment
Joey Ortiz's one-out single in the sixth broke up Kirby's no-hit bid and started a huge rally for the Brewers. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — CJ Abrams had two hits including a leadoff homer, stole three bases and scored three runs on Sunday as the Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2. Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-5), a Twin Cities native pitching at Target Field for the first time, gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. Josh Bell went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Matt Wallner homered and Harrison Bader had two hits for Minnesota, which has lost six of nine since the All-Star break. Daylen Lile tripled and scored on Paul DeJong's sacrifice fly in the fourth to put the Nationals on top 3-2. Washington broke it open with four runs in the fifth off Travis Adams (1-1), keyed by Alex Call's two-run single. Liberty's Breanna Stewart avoids significant injury on right leg, AP source says
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart avoided a significant injury when she hurt her right leg in a game Saturday night, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The All-Star forward had imaging done and nothing major turned up, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because no official statement had been made. She will travel with the team on its four-game road trip that begins in Dallas on Monday night, the person said. Stewart left the game nearly 3 1/2 minutes into the Liberty's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. She had three points and a rebound. Stewart seemed to injure the leg while running up the court. She went to the locker room and never returned to the bench. 'No update, hopefully she'll be OK,' coach Sandy Brondello said the Liberty's five-game winning streak was snapped. New York was playing the second half of a back-to-back. Stewart had a quiet scoring game in Friday's win over Phoenix, with just six points. She did have eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Stewart came into Saturday's game averaging 19 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists on the season to help New York (17-7) to the second-best record in the league. The two-time WNBA MVP hadn't missed a game yet this season. After playing much of July at home, New York will be on the road for five of its next six games. New York also had two other injuries; Kennedy Burke had some cramps and Leonie Fiebich has been dealing with a hand injury she suffered against Phoenix.
