Brandon Woodruff's gem propels Brewers to 11th straight win, 6-0 over Mariners
SEATTLE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff tossed six innings of two-hit ball and the Milwaukee Brewers won their 11th straight, 6-0 over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
Woodruff (2-0) needed just 62 pitches to make it through his third start of the season, giving up two singles and walking none. The right-hander missed all of the 2024 season because of surgery on his pitching shoulder, and has been brought along slowly by the Brewers since his debut on July 6.
George Kirby dueled with Woodruff early, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. But the Brewers tagged Kirby (4-5) for four runs in the sixth while sending eight men to the plate.
The Brewers scored twice in the eighth off Mariners left-hander Brandyn Garcia, who made his major league debut after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day. Milwaukee (60-40) joined Detroit as the only teams to reach 60 wins so far this season. Key moment
Joey Ortiz's one-out single in the sixth broke up Kirby's no-hit bid and started a huge rally for the Brewers. He hit home runs on all three of his swings in the first All-Star Game swing-off to give the National League a victory over the American League. The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox and Phillies. Schwarber was the headliner of Indiana's seven-member Hall of Fame class. Conor McGregor loses appeal against civil jury's finding he sexually assaulted a woman
LONDON (AP) — Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor on Thursday lost his legal appeal against a civil court's finding that he sexually assaulted a woman at a Dublin hotel. In November a jury at the High Court in Dublin found McGregor liable for assaulting Nikita Hand, who says he 'brutally raped and battered' her in a hotel penthouse in 2018. He was ordered to pay Hand almost 250,000 euros ($285,000), as well as about 1.3 million euros ($1.5 million) in legal costs. Hand, 35, successfully sued McGregor in civil court after prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. McGregor alleged that Hand fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. He launched an appeal, but at a hearing earlier this month his lawyer unexpectedly withdrew a request to introduce new evidence. Three appeals court judges in Dublin on Thursday dismissed the appeal 'in its entirety.' Hand was in court for the ruling, but McGregor was not. The 37-year-old fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime in the ring, has become known for anti-immigration statements and criticism of Irish politicians. He has flirted with the idea of running for president of Ireland. U.S. President Donald Trump, a UFC fan, invited McGregor to the White House to mark St. Patrick's Day in March.
