Brandon Woodruff's gem propels Brewers to 11th straight win, 6-0 over Mariners

Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff tossed six innings of two-hit ball and the Milwaukee Brewers won their 11th straight, 6-0 over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
Woodruff (2-0) needed just 62 pitches to make it through his third start of the season, giving up two singles and walking none. The right-hander missed all of the 2024 season because of surgery on his pitching shoulder, and has been brought along slowly by the Brewers since his debut on July 6.
George Kirby dueled with Woodruff early, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. But the Brewers tagged Kirby (4-5) for four runs in the sixth while sending eight men to the plate.
The Brewers scored twice in the eighth off Mariners left-hander Brandyn Garcia, who made his major league debut after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day. Milwaukee (60-40) joined Detroit as the only teams to reach 60 wins so far this season. Key moment
Joey Ortiz's one-out single in the sixth broke up Kirby's no-hit bid and started a huge rally for the Brewers. William Contreras drove home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly, which was followed by RBI singles from Christian Yelich and Isaac Collins, and an RBI double by Jackson Chourio. Key stat
The Brewers are two victories away from tying Minnesota for the longest win streak in the majors this season. The Twins won 13 straight from May 3-19. Up next
Brewers All-Star rookie Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 2.81) will start the second game of the series against the Mariners' Logan Gilbert (2-3, 3.39).

Kyle Schwarber will defer his Indiana University Hall of Fame selection because of attendance rule

Associated Press BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — All-Star Game MVP Kyle Schwarber is deferring his selection to Indiana University's Athletics Hall of Fame to a future year because of a rule requiring all living inductees to attend the ceremony. Indiana's induction is set for Sept. 5, a day Schwarber's Philadelphia Phillies visit the Miami Marlins as they attempt to win their second straight NL East title. Schwarber was selected in his first year of eligibility. Indiana's athletic department announced the selections on Thursday. Schwarber was one of the school's biggest baseball stars, leading the Hoosiers to two Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles while ranking among career leaders in hits (238), home turns (40), runs (182) and slugging percentage (.607) while batting .341. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, made his major league debut the following June and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. This season, the 32-year-old Schwarber ranks among the major league leaders with 37 home runs. He hit home runs on all three of his swings in the first All-Star Game swing-off to give the National League a victory over the American League. The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox and Phillies. Schwarber was the headliner of Indiana's seven-member Hall of Fame class. The other selections are Cody Zeller, who has spent the last 11 seasons playing in the NBA, All-American rower Meradith Dickensheets, 2008 NCAA wrestling champion Angel Escobedo, former football star Mel Groomes, five-time track and field All-American Glenn Terry and Peggy Martin, a pioneering three-sport star in field hockey, women's basketball and softball from 1969-72. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Astros Reportedly Continue Push for All-Star Infielder Carlos Correa

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Houston Astros apparently still are pushing hard for a reunion with All-Star infielder Carlos Correa. According to Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Astros know they want to bring back Correa with Isaac Paredes sidelined for the remainder of the season. "Even after acquiring Ramón Urías from the Baltimore Orioles, the Astros remain interested in upgrading their lineup, according to sources briefed on their plans," they wrote. "One option is still a reunion with Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa, who is guaranteed $96 million through the next three seasons and would have to waive his no-trade clause." DENVER, CO - JULY 19: Carlos Correa #4 of the Minnesota Twins hit an RBI double in the second inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 19, 2025 in Denver, Colorado. DENVER, CO - JULY 19: Carlos Correa #4 of the Minnesota Twins hit an RBI double in the second inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 19, 2025 in Denver, has gone on the record recently admitting he either wants to remain in Minnesota or be traded to Houston; he won't waive his no-trade clause for any other team even though a return to the Astros means playing third base. Astros players reportedly want to bring him back as well. "Correa told reporters on Wednesday night that talks with the Astros were 'not something that I think is serious right now' and sources from both teams downplayed the likelihood of a trade," they wrote. "Talks, however, remain ongoing." If the Astros are going to add an impactful bat, a reunion with Correa makes the most sense. Just because Correa downplayed the trade Wednesday night doesn't mean it won't happen. Trades can develop extremely fast this time of year, and it's likely Houston will try to make a deal happen to fill the void at the hot corner. Conor McGregor loses appeal against civil jury's finding he sexually assaulted a woman

LONDON (AP) — Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor on Thursday lost his legal appeal against a civil court's finding that he sexually assaulted a woman at a Dublin hotel. In November a jury at the High Court in Dublin found McGregor liable for assaulting Nikita Hand, who says he 'brutally raped and battered' her in a hotel penthouse in 2018. He was ordered to pay Hand almost 250,000 euros ($285,000), as well as about 1.3 million euros ($1.5 million) in legal costs. Hand, 35, successfully sued McGregor in civil court after prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. McGregor alleged that Hand fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. He launched an appeal, but at a hearing earlier this month his lawyer unexpectedly withdrew a request to introduce new evidence. Three appeals court judges in Dublin on Thursday dismissed the appeal 'in its entirety.' Hand was in court for the ruling, but McGregor was not. The 37-year-old fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime in the ring, has become known for anti-immigration statements and criticism of Irish politicians. He has flirted with the idea of running for president of Ireland. U.S. President Donald Trump, a UFC fan, invited McGregor to the White House to mark St. Patrick's Day in March. McGregor also faces a lawsuit in Florida for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom of the Kaseya Center, home arena of the Miami Heat, during a 2023 NBA finals game with the Denver Nuggets.
