Time of India2 days ago
Lucknow: Police arrested two men accused of gang-raping a 21-year-old mentally challenged deaf-mute woman after an exchange of fire with them in Balrampur district while they were trying to flee to Nepal early Wednesday.
Harshit Kumar Pandey (23) sustained a bullet injury in his right leg during the encounter, while another accused, Ankur Verma (24), fractured his leg after falling on a boulder.
Five policemen posted in Balrampur were suspended for laxity in patrolling.
The woman was returning home from her maternal uncle's house in Balrampur around 8pm on Monday when Harshit and Ankur offered her lift on their bike. However, they took her to a secluded spot behind Food Corporation of India warehouse and gang-raped her.
The survivor tried walking towards her home but fell unconscious in a field a few metres from her home, police said.
Alarmed as she didn't return home by 9pm, her family searched and found her unconscious in the field. They rushed her to district women's hospital where medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
Police said the accused, who hail from survivor's neighbouring village, were known to survivor's uncle.

On a tip-off Tuesday night that the two suspects were attempting to flee to Nepal via an under-construction highway, a police team intercepted them riding a bike around 12.30am.
The accused opened fire, prompting police to return fire and arrest the duo. Sub-Inspector Amit Chauhan suffered minor injuries in the operation.

Cooperative dept begins inquiry into irregularities

T'puram: The cooperative department began an inquiry as per section 65 of the state cooperative rules on the alleged irregularities surrounding Thirumala Service Cooperative Bank. The inquiry was ordered after finding irregularities in the audit report and several depositors approached the department with complaints. The depositors stopped receiving interest and their attempts to withdraw deposits weren't entertained by the administrative panel members. A few days ago, the department engaged an administrator at the society after dissolving the administrative panel, whose members are accused of committing various irregularities. "The total amount of irregularity and the nature of it will be known only after the 65-inquiry report. Once it is over, the findings will be verified through an inquiry as per section 68 (1) of cooperative rules. The liability of the members in the panel will also be calculated and a final order asking them to pay the amount will be issued as per section 68 (2). If the money is not paid in 30 days, recovery measures will be initiated," said an officer at the department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The depositors also filed a complaint with the Ombudsman, and an order was passed by the Ombudsman directing the panel members to clear their deposits in three months. "The panel members were least bothered about the order of the Ombudsman, as they did not pay our money even after three months. We are now planning to approach the high court and we are hopeful of the departmental inquiry, which began very late," said Suresh M, who deposited Rs 6 lakhs at the bank in 2019. Depositors alleged that Poojappura police haven't registered cases on their complaints despite approaching them several times. "A complaint was given months ago, but police preferred to settle the issue by directing panel members to pay the money soon. I was promised that money would be returned soon in front of police, but the promise remains unfulfilled," said another depositor, who doesn't want to be named. ‘Zero compensation as bike rider drunk, didn't have valid licence'

Chennai: A motor accidents claims tribunal refused compensation to a pillion rider who suffered 48% disability in a road accident, as the bike's rider was drunk and he drove the vehicle against traffic on a one-way road. The rider also did not have a valid driving licence at the time of the accident. The tribunal noted that the claim should have been filed against the motorcycle's driver rather than the load carrier involved in the collision. Sub judge S Palani, presiding over the tribunal in Karaikal, passed the order while dismissing a claim petition moved by A Honest Raj, a resident of Nagapattinam, seeking 9 lakh as compensation from the insurer of the load carrier involved in the accident. According to Honest Raj, on May 13, 2022, around 6.30pm, he was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by Gowthaman at Jawaharlal Nehru Street, Karaikal. At the time of the accident, a load carrier, driven by Rajamanikandan, which came from the opposite direction allegedly in a rash and negligent manner, hit their vehicle. Recording the submissions, the court said, "On a cumulative collection of evidence adduced by the respondent, it would establish that the petitioner's rider, Gowthaman, who was under the influence of alcohol, without holding a valid driving licence, rode the motorcycle on a prohibited one-way road, in a rash and negligent manner and committed the accident. That being so, the petitioner ought to have filed the present claim petition against Gowthaman, owner and insurer of the motorcycle. Admittedly, the petitioner has not filed the claim against the tortfeasor Gowthaman, who is liable for the accident," the tribunal added. Retired govt employee, brother lose Rs 4.4 cr in stock trading scam

Hyderabad: A 61-year-old retired govt employee and his 58-year-old brother were duped of 4.48 crore by fraudsters operating a fake stock trading portal. According to officials, the retired govt employee, a resident of Kothapet, clicked on a YouTube advertisement link about a stock marketing investment platform. Within hours of clicking the link, the victim began receiving WhatsApp messages and voice calls from individuals posing as Rajiv Mehta and his associates, Sana Kapoor and Krithika Joshi. The trio allegedly promised one month of VIP trading with zero commission for anyone who voted daily for Mehta in a purported 'World Finance Challenge' that carried an $8 million prize, which, they claimed, would be shared among supporters. As per their advice, between June 24 and Aug 2, the victims transferred 4.48 crore in 23 transactions from their three bank accounts to multiple accounts provided by the accused. On Aug 2, when the balance on their account was displayed as 39 crore, the brothers decided to withdraw 2 crore to clear housing loan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Suspecting foul play, the brothers travelled to Bengaluru on Aug 6, where the original stock trading company's head office was located. "The company staff in Bengaluru informed us that the platform we used was fake, closely mimicking their company's URL. The fraudsters had even used the name of one of their former employee. After returning to Hyderabad, my brother suffered a stress-induced heart attack and was hospitalised for four days," said the 58-year-old in his police complaint. The victims filed an online complaint and submitted supporting bank statements, chat logs, and screen captures to TGCSB on Aug 14. An FIR was registered under Section 66D of the IT Act and Sections 318(4), 319(2), and 338 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
