Plan to unlock Stoke-on-Trent prosperity delivered to No 10
A delegation from Stoke-on-Trent has visited Downing Street to deliver an ambitious plan to transform the city's economy and "unlock prosperity".The 19-page Future 100 prospectus was drawn up by the city council in consultation with business leaders, academics and MPs.It sets out five "missions" to improve standards of living, opportunities and aspirations for citizens."It's not about going to ministers with a begging bowl but about showing we stand ready to do our bit for the country and deliver change," said Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Gareth Snell.
According to Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Jane Ashworth, deep-rooted problems holding back growth in the city stemmed back to austerity and lack of investment in infrastructure. Targets in the prospectus include reducing the number of children living in poverty, creating 5,000 jobs and building 5,000 homes, all by 2030, with the support of targeted government investment.Ashworth said she was confident the delegation and prospectus could convince the government "we are capable, ready, willing and able to make a real difference"."Investment is Stoke-on-Trent is good not only for the city but for the country," she added.Stakeholders involved in the city vision include Staffordshire police, the UHNM trust, academy trusts and local charities, but private employers are not on the list.
'Not a left-behind city'
The document includes targets to tackle problems linked to deprivation, aligned with national government priorities.The five missions encompass:Securing economic growth through investment in road infrastructure and creative sectors including the struggling ceramics industry. Delivering clean energy by getting more people travelling on buses, increasing the number of passenger journeys by a third.Regeneration of brownfield sites to meet the area's housing targets. There is also a plan to gain UNESCO creative city status to reclaim heritage assets.Removing barriers to opportunity through investment, making qualifications more accessible and improving educational attainment for children and adults.Improving the health and wellbeing of the population and increasing average life expectancy of citizens by two years.
Delegate Vicky Gwynne works for the city council helping different groups connect, following the fallout from the August 2024 riots.She met two prime ministers in her previous role at charity Middleport Matters, and believes it is important to tell powerful people about Stoke. "I think we should be telling them about our strengths and opportunities, and that we're not a left-behind city, we want the opportunity to move forward," she said.

'The average house price here is actually lower than in Oban at £194,295, however, rent prices in Morecambe are slightly higher.' Blackpool tied with Morecambe for second place. The bank says: 'The average house comes in around £147,449 in Blackpool, making Blackpool the most affordable seaside town to purchase a property in the UK. Unfortunately, Blackpool is slightly let down by its rent prices. At an average of £704 per month, rent in Blackpool works out as 40% of the average monthly salary.' It might feel remote to some, but Oban is well-connected. Scotrail runs regular daily trains to and from Glasgow, with tickets starting from around £20. The scenic journey does take about three hours by rail, but since it runs through the Highlands, you're spoilt for beautiful scenery. Oban also serves as the main ferry port for those wanting to reach the islands of Mull, Iona and Staffa and is often used as a base for island-hopping. Oban has been described as a 'paradise' for seafood lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, and many locals have raved about life there, declaring it a 'gorgeous part of the world'. The European Commission has given Bulgaria the green light to join the eurozone next year. This means Brits will eventually have to use up any of their old currency, which is the Bulgarian lev. However, once the euro is in place in Bulgaria - it will be easier for Brits to use up leftover change from a previous trips to other euro-accepting countries. According to Eamonn Turley, a financial specialist at Multi Quote Time: "Currently, Brits travelling to Bulgaria are required to exchange their pounds sterling for Bulgarian levs, which typically involves fees and exchange rates that can add uncertainty and cost to their holiday plans. "Once Bulgaria adopts the euro, British travellers will have the convenience of spending the same currency that they would if they were travelling to most other popular European destinations like Spain, France, or Italy. "The majority of Britons spend debit or credit cards when abroad, and with the euro, there is less foreign transaction fees or dynamic currency conversion fees, which can be hidden and bring added cost." Currently for each pound Brits can get 2.32 levs, but each pound will give Brits €1.19 - meaning that Brits get more levs for their money than euros. Eamonn also explained how Bulgaria has traditionally had a lower living standard that other Western European countries. This means that tourists have often flocked there for the country's cheap holidays. "When other Eastern European countries like Estonia and Lithuania joined the Eurozone, there was a bit of price inflation that came with the stronger currency and greater economic integration," added Eamonn.
