Plan to unlock Stoke-on-Trent prosperity delivered to No 10

BBC News27-02-2025

A delegation from Stoke-on-Trent has visited Downing Street to deliver an ambitious plan to transform the city's economy and "unlock prosperity".The 19-page Future 100 prospectus was drawn up by the city council in consultation with business leaders, academics and MPs.It sets out five "missions" to improve standards of living, opportunities and aspirations for citizens."It's not about going to ministers with a begging bowl but about showing we stand ready to do our bit for the country and deliver change," said Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Gareth Snell.
According to Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Jane Ashworth, deep-rooted problems holding back growth in the city stemmed back to austerity and lack of investment in infrastructure. Targets in the prospectus include reducing the number of children living in poverty, creating 5,000 jobs and building 5,000 homes, all by 2030, with the support of targeted government investment.Ashworth said she was confident the delegation and prospectus could convince the government "we are capable, ready, willing and able to make a real difference"."Investment is Stoke-on-Trent is good not only for the city but for the country," she added.Stakeholders involved in the city vision include Staffordshire police, the UHNM trust, academy trusts and local charities, but private employers are not on the list.
'Not a left-behind city'
The document includes targets to tackle problems linked to deprivation, aligned with national government priorities. The five missions encompass:Securing economic growth through investment in road infrastructure and creative sectors including the struggling ceramics industry. Delivering clean energy by getting more people travelling on buses, increasing the number of passenger journeys by a third.Regeneration of brownfield sites to meet the area's housing targets. There is also a plan to gain UNESCO creative city status to reclaim heritage assets.Removing barriers to opportunity through investment, making qualifications more accessible and improving educational attainment for children and adults.Improving the health and wellbeing of the population and increasing average life expectancy of citizens by two years.
Delegate Vicky Gwynne works for the city council helping different groups connect, following the fallout from the August 2024 riots. She met two prime ministers in her previous role at charity Middleport Matters, and believes it is important to tell powerful people about Stoke. "I think we should be telling them about our strengths and opportunities, and that we're not a left-behind city, we want the opportunity to move forward," she said.

The UK's most affordable seaside town is a 'paradise' with £220,000 house prices

Relocating by the sea sounds like a dream until you see the house prices. Cornwall for one is eye-wateringly expensive, and Brighton is practically London-on-Sea. But not every seaside town requires a trust fund or a six-figure salary to move there. New research from the Co-operative Bank has revealed the UK's most affordable seaside towns — and the winners make coastal living seem like a surprisingly realistic prospect. For each place, the bank looked at average house prices, monthly rents, the house price to income ratio, and the proportion of salary that goes on rent to calculate an overall affordability score. Oban, a small town in the Argyll and Bute area of Scotland, came out on top of the list, with an overall affordability score of 9.82 out of 10. Often referred to as the seafood capital of the country, this picturesque spot offers some of the lowest average house prices (£220,458) and the most reasonable rents (£800 per month) which works out to just 34.7% of the average monthly income. You can access completely fee-free mortgage advice with London & Country (L&C) Mortgages, a partner of Metro. Customers benefit from: – Award winning service from the UK's leading mortgage broker – Expert advisors on hand 7 days a week – Access to 1000s of mortgage deals from across the market Unlike many mortgage brokers, L&C won't charge you a fee for their advice. Find out how much you could borrow online Mortgage service provided by London & Country Mortgages (L&C), which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (registered number: 143002). The FCA does not regulate most Buy to Let mortgages. Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. And a low cost of living isn't all it has going for itself. Located on Scotland's west coast, Oban is a harbour town known for its fresh seafood and sea views. Surrounded by a rugged coastline and rolling hills, it's considered a gateway to the Hebrides and although its population is small (home to just over 8,000 people), the town has plenty to see and do. McCaig's Tower is its most notable attraction, a colosseum-like landmark that sits above the town, offering views of the bay and nearby islands. Nestled beneath a cliff in the town centre, there's also Oban Distillery – one of the oldest in Scotland – where you can take a guided tour and sample some of its signature whiskies. Near the harbour, you'll find lots of fishing boats and ferries, along with plenty of local restaurants serving freshly caught seafood. But if history's more your thing, head just north of Oban to explore the 8,000-year-old ruins of Dunollie Castle, Experts at Co-operative Bank found two Lancashire seaside towns to be the most affordable in the UK. Morecambe came second on the list, with an affordability score of 9.8 out of 10. 'This Lancashire gem captures the essence of the English seaside and has some of the most affordable house prices in the country,' the bank says. 'The average house price here is actually lower than in Oban at £194,295, however, rent prices in Morecambe are slightly higher.' Blackpool tied with Morecambe for second place. The bank says: 'The average house comes in around £147,449 in Blackpool, making Blackpool the most affordable seaside town to purchase a property in the UK. Unfortunately, Blackpool is slightly let down by its rent prices. At an average of £704 per month, rent in Blackpool works out as 40% of the average monthly salary.' It might feel remote to some, but Oban is well-connected. Scotrail runs regular daily trains to and from Glasgow, with tickets starting from around £20. The scenic journey does take about three hours by rail, but since it runs through the Highlands, you're spoilt for beautiful scenery. Oban also serves as the main ferry port for those wanting to reach the islands of Mull, Iona and Staffa and is often used as a base for island-hopping. Oban has been described as a 'paradise' for seafood lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, and many locals have raved about life there, declaring it a 'gorgeous part of the world'. More Trending One resident on Mumsnet wrote: 'Oban is beautiful, a wonderful place to live and work. Winters are mild, being on the west coast. You get used to midges, they are not the big problem everyone thinks they are, especially by the coast, a bit of sea breeze and they can't fly so won't bother you.' Others praised its pace of life compared to the city, including Redditor Stevoknevo70 who commented: 'I've lived in Oban for six years now, wild horses couldn't drag me back to Glasgow. Wonderful place to raise a family, can be on the beach in under 10 minutes, and easy access to numerous islands.' According to Rightmove, the majority of properties sold in Oban during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £151,783. Detached properties sold for an average of £351,993, with semi-detached properties fetching £227,786. View More » So, while you might not secure a five-bedroom beachside property for £200,000, there are definitely affordable options. Oban – £220,458 (average house price) Morecambe – £194,295 Blackpool – £147,449 Troon – £225,977 Filey – £213,669 Scarborough – £202,600 Whitby – £253,519 Southport – £239,472 Dunbar – £327,821 Swansea – £200,648 Do you have a story to share? One of Europe's cheapest holiday destinations to enter the Eurozone next year – here's what it means for your trip

Plus, inside bargain holiday hotspot with cheap booze and wild sex games that's Europe's new party central for Brits EUR-ON One of Europe's cheapest holiday destinations to enter the Eurozone next year – here's what it means for your trip Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A NEW country is set to join the eurozone next year - and it might not be good new for Brits. The European Commission has given Bulgaria the green light to join the eurozone next year. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Bulgaria will join the eurozone next year Credit: Alamy Bulgaria joined the European Union back in 2007 and it will become the 21st country to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026. This means Brits will eventually have to use up any of their old currency, which is the Bulgarian lev. However, once the euro is in place in Bulgaria - it will be easier for Brits to use up leftover change from a previous trips to other euro-accepting countries. According to Eamonn Turley, a financial specialist at Multi Quote Time: "Currently, Brits travelling to Bulgaria are required to exchange their pounds sterling for Bulgarian levs, which typically involves fees and exchange rates that can add uncertainty and cost to their holiday plans. "Once Bulgaria adopts the euro, British travellers will have the convenience of spending the same currency that they would if they were travelling to most other popular European destinations like Spain, France, or Italy. "The majority of Britons spend debit or credit cards when abroad, and with the euro, there is less foreign transaction fees or dynamic currency conversion fees, which can be hidden and bring added cost." Currently for each pound Brits can get 2.32 levs, but each pound will give Brits €1.19 - meaning that Brits get more levs for their money than euros. Eamonn also explained how Bulgaria has traditionally had a lower living standard that other Western European countries. This means that tourists have often flocked there for the country's cheap holidays. "When other Eastern European countries like Estonia and Lithuania joined the Eurozone, there was a bit of price inflation that came with the stronger currency and greater economic integration," added Eamonn. Trade Sunny Beach in Bulgaria for a little-known spot praised by locals "Britons may find that while currency exchange hassles disappear, the prices of meals, hotels, and services may gradually rise." However, there are also positives to the news as he says that stronger economic stability can lead to "improved transport links, more quality hotels, and improved tourist facilities, making Bulgaria an even more competitive holiday destination". He finished by saying: "From my financial perspective, this integration within the eurozone will render Bulgaria a more desirable destination for British tourists wanting convenience and safety with their spending, with perhaps the medium to long-term gain of enhanced tourism service and infrastructure." However, many Bulgarians remain skeptical and fear a rise in prices during the switch - which has happened in other countries that joined over the past decade. Croatia adopted the euro on January 1, 2023, becoming the 20th member state of the eurozone. The country was considered relatively cheap but has become more expensive over the past two decades. 3 Croatia entered the Eurozone in 2023 Credit: Getty According to a European Central Bank blog: "the impact of the euro changeover on consumer prices in Croatia has so far been relatively small". It added: "Continued monitoring is essential. "Croatia's experience is an important lesson for other EU Member States adopting the euro, as it confirms that the economic costs arising from the effect of the changeover on inflation are limited and of a one-off nature." The same could be seen with Bulgaria's transition. There are also several reasons why Brits should swap Spanish holidays for five destinations in stunning European country – with cheap pints & flights. Plus, inside bargain holiday hotspot with cheap booze and wild sex games that's Europe's new party central for Brits.

Best value cabin bags for Easyjet, British Airways and Ryanair

Whether you're a frequent flyer or weekend jetsetter, these cabin-friendly backpacks and suitcases are the must-have for your next adventure Airlines are becoming stricter about the size of hand luggage travellers are allowed to take. With the holiday season fast approaching, watchful staff have been asking passengers to fit their bags in the luggage sizer. Holidaymakers who do not double-check luggage restrictions risk paying extra, so it's best to check the rules and get the right bag for the trip. From budget airlines to expensive first-class flights, airlines offer two types of carry-on luggage. A personal bag that must fit under the seat or a larger cabin bag to fit in the overhead locker, with Ryanair offering the least allowance for both - a free bag measuring 40 x 20 x 25cm and a small luggage measuring 55 x 40 x 20cm with a maximum weight of 10kg. But don't assume long-haul airlines are more generous. British Airways passengers are allowed to bring a free bag measuring up to 40 x 30 x 15cm but with a weight limit of up to 23kg. To make life easier, we've compiled a list of backpacks and cabin bags so jetsetters can make the most of packing space. Budget-friendly options: Lossga Underseat Anti Theft Carry-on from £16.98 Dimensions: 40 x 20 x 25 cm Backpacks are great for short weekend trips and this Lossga bag is crafted to meet the size requirements of Ryanair. It has two main compartments - one for clothes and shoes and another with multiple pockets for charger, toiletries and other small items. At the back, there is a hidden back zippered pocket, perfect to store important documents, wallets, or gadgets securely against your body, deterring potential theft attempts. The thick padded shoulder straps also help distribute the weight evenly on the shoulders and back. With more than 1,770 reviews on Amazon, shoppers also commented on the style with one saying: "It is not an informal backpack but rather a good-style one. Definitely would work for when I travel for business and not only leisure." But another customer said: "The Bag gets dirty very easily and it does not clean well." It comes in a range of colours so those concerned about dirt marks should stick to darker shades. Dimensions: 46 x 32 x 21cm Decathlon's own accessories brand Kipsta has left shoppers impressed, with the viral kit bags as their go-to travel bag. Now they have upgraded the bag range and this 30L Backpack Hardcase is a stylish travel essential including a rigid compartment for shoes. Made with weight and abrasion-resistant materials, there are six pockets to fit everything needed for a short-haul getaway. One shopper mentioned that it has "little back support" but others liked the multi-pocket design and the affordable price. The Kipsta may not work for travel on Ryanair as a free bag, but it will be fine on Easyjet. Narwey Underseat Foldable Travel Duffel Bag - from £11.99 Dimensions: 40 x 19 x 25cm This Amazon number one bestseller has caused a frenzy on TikTok and is dubbed the "viral Ryanair bag." With an impressive 14,460 reviews on the e-commerce platform, the easy-carrying holdall has scored a 4.3 out of five rating. Known for its affordable price and perfect bag size, measuring 40 x 19 x 25cm, the bag fits everything travellers need for a short holiday and now Amazon has dropped a limited time deal with 38% discount, dropping the price from £15.99 to £9.99. The thick nylon-like fabric left Express showbiz reporter Fran Winston surprised as she said: "The bag felt surprisingly robust for the price, it's made from a heavyweight fabric with sturdy-looking stitching and zips. The shoulder strap is secured with metal hardware but the top straps struck me as too short. "I could just get it under my arms unpacked." Shoppers also suggested using packing cubes to fit more in the bag, but some said they struggle to fit their laptop in. Xlodea Ryanair Cabin Bag - £18.99 Dimensions: 40 x20 x 25cm Yet another popular Amazon bag loved by travellers, this backpack flight bag is approved by Ryanair with a compact 40 x 20 x 25cm measurement. Crafted from high-grade, water-resistant fabric, this backpack is built to withstand daily wear and tear, featuring reinforced zippers and safety features to keep valuable items safe. It also has a built-in USB port, so there's no need to carry a power bank in hand to charge a phone or tablet. Shoppers also confirmed the bag " fits into the frame testers at airports" and they managed to "avoid getting charged at check-in gate". Another shared: "This bag looks great and has a bit more padding on the shoulder pads for my daughter. There's a lot of room inside for some clothes and things like tablets and it will be perfect for a travelling on an airline and you can pull the side straps down to try and make it a bit thinner." AVIO Atlas 45cm Underseat Cabin Bag - £27.99 Dimensions: 45 x 36 x 20cm If shoppers have back and shoulder pain issues, getting a trolley bag is a better option but with airlines limiting the underseat bag sizes, we have found this AVIO Underseat Cabin Bag perfect for easyJet and Wizz Air customers without paying extra for luggage. The hardshell bag, measuring at 45 x 36 x 20cm, is a lightweight suitcase offering smart interior compartments and compression straps for organised packing on shorter trips or light travel. The telescopic handle also comes in three heights, which many customers say it's been a "game-changer". One five-star shopper shared: "For this price, I wasn't expecting great things, but I was totally wrong. The colour is beautiful, the zip is smooth and secure and the construction is great. It's really lightweight and the wheels are smooth and it's easy to move around." But some said the handle "flexes a lot and creaks in use". Pricier options: Fjällräven K nken Laptop 15" - £95 Dimensions: 38 x 26 x 17cm For a stylish look, Swedish outdoor clothing brand Fjällräven offers an array of colours on their iconic backpack and now they have extended to more sizings including this one that fits a 15-inch laptop. The bag is a no-fuss backpack that has one main compartment with a padded sleeve for laptops or tablets and a zippered pocket at the front. It's best to use a shoe bag and lingerie bags to keep things tidy and clean. Unlike the other backpacks, the material is thin yet, very durable and water-resistant, making it perfect for travel. The soft case fabric is made from durable polyester tarpaulin, and the practical design provides room to pack more. There's a 15" sleeve on the inside to keep a laptop safe and the large internal compartment features a zipped divider to help keep dirty shoes or clothes away from clean ones. While there's plenty of room for travel essentials, the compression straps help find space for a little more. Not to mention, there are extra pockets both inside and out for quick and easy access to passport, phone, wallet and keys. The North Face is offering early sale access to their XPLR PASS members and shoppers can sign up for free to unlock 30%.
