Egypt Calls for International Support to Advance Gaza Ceasefire
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatti held a series of high-level calls with his international counterparts. The Egyptian minister spoke with David Lammy, the UK's Foreign Secretary, Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Foreign Minister, and Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He also spoke with Hussein al-Sheikh, Deputy Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Executive Committee and Deputy President of Palestine.
During the talks, Abdelatti outlined Egypt's active mediation efforts, carried out in cooperation with Qatar and the United States, to secure a ceasefire, ensure the entry of humanitarian aid, and facilitate the release of both hostages and detainees.
He emphasized that significant progress has been made in recent talks, particularly during the consultations held in Cairo with the Palestinian delegation, which focused on the proposal put forward by U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. Abdelatti underlined the need for international pressure on Israel to approve the plan.
The minister also discussed Egypt's preparations to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza once a ceasefire agreement is reached, signaling Egypt's continued commitment to supporting Palestinians both politically and on the ground.
For their part, the UK, Turkish, and EU officials praised Egypt's central role in mediation, stressing their full support for Cairo's efforts in partnership with Qatar and the United States to achieve a breakthrough. They reaffirmed that Egypt's leadership remains essential for stability and peace across the region.

Cairo, Tokyo sign LOI to expand educational cooperation, support for persons with disabilities
Egypt's Minister of Education and Technical Education, Mohamed Abdel Latif, has signed a Letter of Intent with Abe Toshiko, Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), to broaden cooperation mechanisms in education, enhance support for persons with disabilities, and establish new partnerships in technical education and vocational training. The signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of Japan's Ministry of Education on the sidelines of Abdel Latif's participation in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), held in Yokohama from 20 to 22 August. Abdel Latif affirmed the Ministry's commitment to building on the achievements of existing cooperation, particularly the Egyptian–Japanese Schools project, which he said will be highlighted during TICAD9 as a successful model that could be replicated across African countries. He expressed satisfaction at expanding the scope of collaboration to include greater support for students with disabilities and stronger partnerships in technical and vocational training, with a focus on transferring Japanese expertise in key areas such as agriculture. During the meeting, Abdel Latif also extended an official invitation to his Japanese counterpart to attend the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum. For her part, Abe Toshiko welcomed the signing of the Letter of Intent, describing it as the outcome of continuous cooperation and joint efforts since Abdel Latif's visit to Japan last February. Egypt's tourism sector expected to generate approximately US$100 billion in revenue
Credit rating agency Fitch Solutions anticipates Egypt to generate approximately US$97 billion in tourism revenues by 2029, the privately-owned al-Mal newspaper reported on Monday. A recent report issued by the agency during the third quarter of this year, including its forecasts for the future of Egyptian tourism over the next five years, added that estimates indicate that the sector will generate revenues of US$17.5 billion by the end of this year, rising to $18.6 billion in 2026. Fitch explained that Egyptian tourism will achieve strong growth of 8.1 percent year-on-year, reaching $17.6 billion in 2025, compared to $16.2 billion last year, in line with the increase in tourist numbers. It pointed out that the tourism sector is expected to generate approximately $19.6 billion in 2027, surpassing the $20 billion mark in 2028, and reaching $20.9 billion in 2029. The report said that international tourism revenues in Egypt were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions imposed at the time, leading to a decline to $4.9 billion in 2020, compared to $14.3 billion in 2019. Fitch explained that, over the coming years, improved consumer spending in Europe and the Middle East and North Africa will contribute to increased visitor revenues. According to the report, many tourists visiting Egypt are relatively wealthy travelers with high purchasing power, particularly from the UK, Germany, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Egypt received approximately 8.7 million tourists during the first half of this year, a 22 percent increase compared to the same period last year, it noted. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, stated that there has been a 22-23 percent increase in the volume of tourism revenues during the first six months of this year, compared to the same period in 2024.
