New Kilimanjaro diet rivals the popular Mediterranean eating plan for a potentially longer life

The Mediterranean diet has long been hailed as the healthiest way to eat, with its fresh fish, green vegetables, and healthy fats, the regimen dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, now dubbed Blue Zones.
Blue Zones are locations lauded as longevity hotspots with low rates of chronic disease and significant numbers of natives living well into their nineties and beyond.
Even though the Mediterranean variation has earned the title as healthiest fare year after year, the cuisine of a nation in Africa could soon take its place, step forward the Tanzanian Kilimanjaro diet.
Dutch researchers recently found that people in Tanzania, on the southeastern edge of Africa bordering Kenya, are far healthier than western nations due to a focus on unprocessed, traditional foods.
The Tanzanian Kilimanjaro diet, focuses on foods like okra, plantains, and beans, and drinks like mbege, made using fermented banana and the grain millet.
It was found that men who followed the African plan had significantly lower levels of inflammation and stronger immune systems.
Experts behind the study believe it's the diet's lack of processed food that keeps inflammation at bay, lowers risks of chronic diseases, and possibly extend lifespan.
Dr Quirijn de Mast, lead study author and infectious disease specialist at Netherlands' Radboud University Medical Center, said: 'Our study highlights the benefits of these traditional food products for inflammation and metabolic processes in the body.
'At the same time, we show how harmful an unhealthy Western diet can be.'
The researchers recruited 77 healthy Tanzanian men with an average age of 25.
Of those, 23 who normally followed the Kilimanjaro diet were asked to switch to a typical Western diet for two weeks, which included foods like processed sausages, white bread, and fries.
Meanwhile, 22 who typically ate western meals followed the Kilimanjaro plan for two weeks. This included eating corn, okra, plantains, kidney beans and avocados.
Another 22 on the western diet also were asked to drink one serving of mbege every day for a week.
The rest who maintained their normal diets were used as controls.
Researchers found those who switched from the Kilimanjaro to the Western diet had higher levels of inflammatory proteins in their blood. Their immune cells were also less effective in warding off pathogens.
The authors said the Western diet showed 'systemic inflammation and metabolic dysregulation'.
Those who switched to the Kilimanjaro eating plan, however, saw the opposite effect.
The changes to inflammation levels were still detectable via blood samples for four weeks after the study ended, suggesting the Tanzanian diet's long-lasting benefits.
Dr de Mast said: 'Inflammation is at the root of many chronic conditions, which makes this study highly relevant for Western countries as well.'
However, while the African diet seems to have similar effects to the one that came out of the Mediterranean, Tanzania itself is not considered a Blue Zone. The average life expectancy is 67 - in the U.S., it is 77.
Greece and Italy, two countries that adhere to the Mediterranean diet, have an average life expectancy of 82 and 84, respectively. Both are each home to one of the world's five Blue Zones.
According to the latest data, Tanzania had a cancer rate of 140 cases per 100,000 people in 2022, significantly lower than 445 per 100,000 in the U.S.
Tanzania records about 44,000 cancer cases per year compared to around two million in the U.S., although the east African country has a significantly smaller population with roughly 66 million people in Tanzania compared to the U.S.'s 330 million.
Both countries have roughly equal diabetes rates, with one in ten adults diagnosed with the condition.
Dietitian Sapna Peruvemba told VegNews that people who wanted to follow the Tanzanian diet should focus on building meals around veg, fruits, and legumes.
And to include fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi, which have probiotics that have been shown to promote the production of disease-fighting antibodies and anti-inflammatory compounds.
As Peruvemba said: 'Don't underestimate the power of returning to the basics.'

The shock death of Michael Mosley, whose legacy lives on through his transformative healthy eating advice, was the push Lorraine Kerr needed to finally change her bad habits The tragic news of Michael Mosley 's death this time last year forced Lorraine Kerr to put change into action. She had always been a fan of the TV doctor and heard about his popular diet plan two years ago, but was stuck in a rut of emotional eating. It was in June 2024 when the 55-year-old returned home from Greek-island hopping that sparked the start of a new journey of health and fitness. She too had been holidaying in Symi, the very same picturesque island where Dr Mosley had been staying and subsequently died. The health guru, known for popularising the 5:2 diet, was found dead in a rocky area of Agia Marina on June 5. He had said goodbye to his wife, Clare Bailey, at the beach before going alone on a two-mile walk, having left his phone at the hotel. Michael, 67, had taken a wrong turn and became lost. Police said he died of natural causes, and an inquest last December concluded his death was "most likely attributable either to heat stroke (accidental) or non-identified pathological cause". The shock news made Lorraine, who weighed 14-and-a-half stone and is now more than six stone lighter, want to honour the medic's lasting legacy. "I first heard about The Fast 800 by listening to Dr Michael Mosley 's podcast about two years ago," she told the Mirror. "I'd already put on a lot of weight and thought the plan would be a sustainable option for me, but at that point I wasn't ready to do anything. I've always been an emotional eater, and after losing both my mother and sister in a very short space of time, I found myself turning to sugary foods. It took a toll on my health and my GP said it had put me on the path to pre-diabetes." She added: "When the news broke about what had happened to him, it kind of galvanised me to stop dithering…and in a way I felt like I wanted to honour him and all the work he and his team had done." She began with The Very Fast 800 – the programme's most rapid weight loss approach, which involves up to 12 weeks of eating two to three Mediterranean-style meals each day, totalling approximately 800 - 900 calories per day. In those first 12 weeks, she dropped to 12 stone 5lbs. Today, she is just 6lbs away from her goal weight of 8 stone 4lbs. Much of that weight loss, says Lorraine, is the result of a complete change in her eating habits. A typical day of eating might have been an extra-large Danish pastry from a bakery at the end of her road, lots of coffee with cream and artificial sweeteners, a steak pie and a packet of crisps for lunch, plus several chocolate bar snacks or biscuits throughout the day and more coffee. Dinner was likely to be pizza or spaghetti bolognese – albeit homemade, as both Lorraine and her husband Nick enjoy cooking. However the new diet inspired Lorraine to embrace a lot more vegetables, particularly greens that she doesn't particularly enjoy. 'I found the first 12 weeks difficult at first," she said. "I was very hungry but absolutely determined and I knew there was an end to the very low calorie restriction. The galvanisation really helped me to get through it. 'I always loved the kale recipes, in particular the Harissa Greens and Halloumi, which featured largely during my 12 weeks and since. I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I absolutely love it." Typical meals for Lorraine now that she has moved onto The Fast 800's maintenance approach - The Way of Life - include baked oats, pears and walnuts for breakfast, plenty of Greek yogurt, different kinds of salad for lunch, and healthier evening meals that might include oily fish, meatballs or even vegetarian selections. If she's on the go, she'll make use of pre-prepared meals such as The Fast 800 Dark Chocolate and Raspberry Protein Bars. Perhaps the biggest motivation for embracing her new lifestyle permanently is the huge improvement in IBS symptoms. 'The amazing thing was that within three days of starting the programme, my irritable bowel syndrome, which I'd suffered from for a couple of years, had vanished, and it's never returned.' Lorraine now believes her problems were as a result of consuming too many artificial sweeteners. 'This isn't scientific, but as a test I reintroduced some artificial sweeteners and within two to three days the symptoms came back and were quite severe. "When I stopped eating the sweeteners, the symptoms vanished again. I tried the same thing one more time to check and the symptoms returned straightaway and disappeared again as soon as I stopped…I've not had one day of IBS since I stopped eating artificial sweeteners after reintroducing them briefly." Lorraine, who takes the Pre + Probiotic supplement, has also seen other health improvements. Her fibromyalgia - long-term condition that involves widespread body pain - symptoms have improved along with back problems caused by Coccydynia – permanent inflammation of the coccyx. 'I used to get explosions of pain; sometimes so horrific I needed morphine. I haven't had one since around the six month mark, so my weight loss has really helped with that too.' Alongside her healthier eating, Lorraine also began regular exercise. She started slowly, five days a week with resistance training, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training, which comprises fast-paced exercise in short bursts) and Pilates. 'My fitness was very poor and I was struggling to walk anywhere because of my weight. "I'm only 5ft and 1.5 inches with a very slight frame, so that was a lot of weight to be carrying around on a small person. It was really hard going just to do the basic level, but I lost quite a bit of weight in those first two weeks, which gave me the psychological push and my sleep improved too.' She now swims in the sea regularly and finds the 15 minute walk to and from the beach – including a steep hill on the way home, easy. 'I'm walking really quickly now. My body feels clearer and brighter. There are so many benefits,' she says. Lorraine is now adamant that the dramatic changes both to her body shape and health are not something she wants to reverse. 'It's had a massive impact on my wellbeing and health, so I'm really looking to make this a way of life because the changes have been so good. That's the whole point, isn't it?!' "I will be sailing past Symi at the end of next week so will give a silent nod to Dr Mosley and his lovely family - I can say I did it, I feel great, thank you."

I've been to Kenya to investigate the murky world of transplant tourism and a black market that preys on the poor. Wealthy tourists travel here from across the world to receive illegal, but life-saving kidney transplants. The donors receive less than £2000 for donating their organs. It's clear these men are not the ones benefiting financially from the deal – so who is? And who exactly are these organs going to? Across the world, thousands of patients are tied to dialysis machines, week after week, and for them, a transplant means life. However, donors are few and waiting lists are endless. For those who are wealthy and desperate, waiting isn't an option and if they have the cash, they are prepared to pay as much as £80,000 for a life-saving transplant. They come from Israel, Germany, France and Japan and a range of African countries. On the other side there are the sellers. Many young men in Eldoret, a quiet town in western Kenya, are healthy but extremely poor, with no job, no prospects and no lifeline. So they offer the one thing they have: their body – and a kidney, at a price of £1,800. I've been investigating how these two worlds meet, and it involves a long, shadowy chain of brokers – each one taking a cut. At the top: wealthy foreigners, using companies like Medlead, which openly advertises transplant services online. The company has agents in Kenya, who welcome clients, and arrange their stay at a luxury hotel. Medlead didn't respond to our questions, but they've previously said they have no involvement in locating donors, and that they operate in accordance with the law. Below them are local brokers and recruiters, many of whom have also sold their own kidneys. It's essentially a pyramid. They recruit their friends, and if the friend agrees, the recruiter earns a few hundred pounds. That's enough to feed a family, and enough to tempt another. Those higher in the chain? They earn much more. The final stop is Mediheal Hospital, which is a separate company from Medlead. Here, they perform the crossmatch, the paperwork, the surgery. Conditions are clean, professional and efficient. But it's illegal – not to mention unethical – for doctors to carry out a transplant when they know the donor is being paid or coerced. As one nurse, Lorna, explained to me: 'I'm conflicted because having a human heart you always wish to see someone live. Despite him buying the kidney no one wishes someone to die.' Mediheal is so well-known in Eldoret that young men walk in asking to sell their kidneys. However Dr Srinivas Murthy, Mediheal's chief kidney doctor, denies any knowledge of payments to donors and says his only goal is to save patients: 'It's very painful to see somebody rotting on dialysis… it's difficult because it's there choice ultimately whether to sell or not… the government should help youth to find a better source of money.' Mediheal is owned by Indian-born businessman and politician Swarup Mishra. The company claims to abide by strict ethical and legal standards – and said it would cooperate with a police investigation into transplants at the hospital. They also deny any involvement in arrangements between donors and recipients. But this is a cycle driven by need – one human's desperation to live, and another's desperation to escape poverty. But when survival is for sale, who really profits? Tributes pour in for "one of a kind" former East Renfrewshire provost Betty Cunningham

She sadly passed away at the age of 79, it was confirmed. Tributes have poured in for a former East Renfrewshire provost – described as 'one of a kind' and a 'determined champion' – after she sadly passed away. Labour councillor and past provost Betty Wood-Cunningham OBE died aged 79, it was confirmed. She had served her constituents faithfully in Barrhead, Liboside and Uplawmoor for 26 years. ‌ And her dedication to the area was recognised last year when she received a Lifetime Legend award at the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) and CCLA annual councillor awards. ‌ Books of condolence have been set up at the council offices in Barrhead Main Street and at Eastwood headquarters for members of the public to pay their respects. Betty was first elected in 1999 and was provost of East Renfrewshire Council from 2003 to 2007. She received an OBE from Her Majesty the Queen in the 2011 New Year's Honours List for services to East Renfrewshire and Malawi. Betty had first travelled to the African country in 2007 and set up a charity – the Betty Cunningham International Trust – which built a health clinic and nursery schools. Paying tribute, West Scotland Labour MSP Paul O'Kane described Betty as a 'dear friend'. He said: 'Betty Wood-Cunningham OBE was Barrhead through and through. She loved the bones and the stones of this place, and she was immensely proud to represent it on the council for over two decades. 'As provost, she represented East Renfrewshire across the country and worked hard to make everyone feel like they were a VIP when the provost came to officiate at an event. ‌ 'She raised thousands of pounds for charities, from supporting talented young musicians locally to local churches, hospices and, of course, her beloved Malawi. 'She was fiercely political and fiercely Labour – standing up for working people was in her DNA. On a personal level, she was my political mammy and a dear friend. 'For all the times she chided me, or we had our disagreements, there were countless more examples of her kindness and generosity to me and my family. ‌ 'She was one of a kind – from the foot of the town to receiving her OBE from the late Queen at the palace, she was always Betty. I will miss her terribly. May she rest in peace.' Provost Mary Montague, who signed the book of condolence in Barrhead, added: 'Betty's death is a sad loss to her family, colleagues, staff and many people locally and far and wide. 'Strong in character and often in her language, she was formidable in fighting for the best interests of Barrhead and East Renfrewshire. ‌ 'She was a determined champion for a just cause and, for anyone who found themselves in a difficult situation and asked Betty for help, they got it. 'Betty was a paradox of fiercely not pulling her punches when necessary to a woman of incredible empathy, compassion and love for fellow human beings. My condolences and my heart go out to Betty's family whom she loved with a passion and I hope they see, from the hundreds of lovely messages on social media, just how much Betty was appreciated and the extent of her legacy of public service.' Council leader Owen O'Donnell, who signed the book of condolence at the council's Eastwood HQ, said: 'Betty's passing has left me with a great sense of grief and sorrow which will be shared by the wider Labour family, council staff and colleagues, the many lives she touched in Barrhead and East Renfrewshire and much further afield in her beloved Malawi. 'This all still feels so raw and a time of personal grieving. We will have time in the days and weeks ahead to more fully celebrate her life together. 'My thoughts and prayers remain with her family at this time who graciously welcomed me into their home so I could say my final goodbyes in the hours before Betty passed away. Betty will remain an inspiration for us all.'
