Gavin Lerena to strike back at Kenilworth
Jockey championship leader Gavin Lerena had a quiet Hollywoodbets Durban July day by his high standards but looks set to bounce back with a vengeance at Kenilworth in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Lerena rode a single winner at Turffontein on Sunday, bringing his 2024/25 season tally to 246 – five ahead of triumphant July winner Craig Zackey and six ahead of reigning champ Richard Fourie, who came so agonisingly close in the big event in Durban.
Both Zackey and Fourie are in action at Kenilworth, but it's Lerena who appears to hold the best hand – including five ante-post favourites on the eight-race card.
The popular Joburg rider starts his book in Race 1 aboard the Vaughan Marshall-trained Day In Day Out, who is quoted at R5.50 a Win by Betway – third favouritism.
In Race 3, he partners Marshall's talented Time Fo Orchids – at R6.00 the Win.
The hot run for Lerena could begin in the fourth race with Red State (2.70), who will be saddled by veteran conditioner Ricky Maingard.
In the fifth, his mount is Firing On All Cylinders (R3.50) for Harold Crawford and Michelle Rix. Then it's on to Oni San (R5.50) for Marshall in a very open-looking sixth.
Paul Reeves will be giving Galloping Gav a leg up on Lovers Lane (R3.50) in the seventh and the rider completes his Cape Town sojourn on Peace Of Mind (R4.33) for Crawford and Rix in the lucky last.
Fourie takes just three rides – in Races 1, 2 and 3 – and might have a fishing outing planned for later in the afternoon.
Zackey rides seven on the card, with apparently his best chance coming in Race 3 with Dean Street from the Lucinda Woodruff yard.

Rahm is at 6.20 and third favourite is Niemann at 7.50. South Africa's Dean Burmester, who's had a good year on the LIV Golf Tour, is not a bad bet at 34.00. There are a number of other betting options available through Betway, including round leaders, winning margins and even for holes-in-one. Famous marque can change a set of tyres in two secs. Ferrari's legion of Formula 1 fans will be pleased to hear the famous marque is likely to win Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix – in the 'Fastest Pit Stop' category. Betway has Ferrari at 1.61 to execute the fastest pit stop on either of their two cars, driven by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull Racing, the team of reigning world champion Max Verstappen, are next in the odds at 4.00, with runaway 2025 constructor championship leaders McLaren at 6.50. Ferrari haven't always been the fastest in the pits, but in 2025 they've upped their game, partly thanks to machine learning. Leclerc's car had its tyres changed in two minutes flat at the Saudi and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix, and 2.04 in Monaco. The fastest stop on record was posted by McLaren, who achieved a time of 1.80 seconds at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. The previous record was held by Red Bull. Alessandro Fusaro, the No 1 mechanic for Ferrari's Formula 1 team, is the man behind the new Ferrari dominance. He has a tattoo of Guido, the tyre-changing forklift from Pixar's movie Cars, a character who is a passionate Ferrari fan and a pit crew member in the film. Meanwhile, on the actual track, will it be McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who'll come out on top or perhaps Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton or George Russell? AB de Villiers' South African team beat Australia by one run in their semi-final on Thursday, while Pakistan got a 'walk-over' after India decided not to play, because of political tensions between the nations. Will this give South Africa the edge, the fact they've played one more game and are battle-ready, or will Pakistan be fresher than their opponents? South Africa have the two top run-scorers at the tournament, namely De Villiers with 309 runs, including two hundreds and one fifty, and JJ Smuts, with 186 runs. Kamran Akmal has been Pakistan's best batter with 186 runs. On the bowling front, South Africa's Aaron Phangiso and Wayne Parnell are joint second on the wicket-takers list with nine each, two behind Australia's Peter Siddle. Saeed Ajmal has been Pakistan's most successful wicket-taker with six wickets (6/16) in one match. Next is Sohail Tanvir with six from four matches.
