Zach McKinstry picked as AL All-Star sub as Tigers tie Dodgers for most picks for Midsummer Classic

The Detroit Tigers have the best record in the majors. Now they are tied for having the most All-Stars, too.
Zach McKinstry was picked Wednesday to replace Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, who has been dealing with a rib injury. The infielder-outfielder will join Detroit second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielders Javier Báez and Riley Greene — all AL starters — and staff ace Tarik Skubal, who also is among the candidates to start the All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, Houston third baseman Isaac Paredes was picked Wednesday to replace the Guardians' José Ramírez, who had been the starting third baseman. That gives the Astros four All-Stars in Peña and pitchers Hunter Brown and Josh Hader.
The Guardians said Ramírez wanted 'to focus on recovery and preparation for the second half of the season.'
Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill also was added to the NL All-Star team Wednesday, shortly after he struck out Freddie Freeman, Andy Pages and Tommy Edman in order in the 10th inning to earn the win in the Brewers' 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Megill earned his first career All-Star selection by going 2-2 with a 2.41 ERA, 21 saves and 43 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings.
"This was the goal in the offseason," Megill said. 'Just worked my butt off for it, and here we are.'
The five All-Stars for Detroit is tied for the most with the World Series champion Dodgers, who have DH Shohei Ohtani, catcher Will Smith and first baseman Freddie Freeman starting for the NL along with pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Yamamoto is scheduled to start Sunday for Los Angeles, so Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott has been picked to replace him.
McKinstry and Paredes make four total replacements and 69 players between the two All-Star teams. The other substitution was Rays third baseman Junior Caminero for Boston's Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps.
The Tigers have been one of the surprise stories of the first half of the season. After going 86-76 and tying for second in the AL Central last season, 6 1/2 games behind the division-winning Guardians, they were off to a 59-34 start heading into Wednesday night's series finale against Tampa Bay — three games ahead of the Dodgers for the best record in the majors.
The versatile McKinstry has been a big reason why.
Along with playing every infield position besides catcher, and both corner outfield spots, McKinstry entered Wednesday hitting .283 with seven homers and 27 RBIs. The 30-year-old needs just three more homers and nine RBIs to set career highs.
Peña, who is hitting a career-best .322 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs in 82 games for the Astros, has been out since June 28 with a fractured rib. He had hoped to return by the All-Star break, but has not been cleared to resume baseball activity.
Paredes, his teammate, is headed to his second straight All-Star Game in his first season in Houston. He's hitting a career-best .255 with 19 homers and 49 RBIs for the Astros, who have a comfortable lead over Seattle in the NL West.
Ramírez was hit by a pitch in a game against Toronto on June 26 and has struggled at the plate ever since. But the seven-time All-Star was still hitting .299 with 16 homers, 44 RBIs and 24 stolen bases through 87 games for the Guardians.

Pete Alonso belts homer in second straight as he closes in on Mets' all-time home run record

Try it free Pete finally posted his first repeat in nearly two months to move ever closer to the all-time Mets home run record. Pete Alonso went yard for the second straight game after homering just once in his first 12 appearances since the All-Star break to help the Mets to a 12-6 victory Saturday over the Giants at Citi Field. Advertisement Alonso's three-run blast in the first inning was the 250th home run of his career, pulling him within two of tying Darryl Strawberry's long-standing club record of 252. Strawberry's total came in 1,109 games over eight seasons with the Mets from 1983-1990. 'It felt really special. I was just happy to help the team right there,' Alonso said. 'Honestly, I don't think about [passing Strawberry] a whole bunch. I just want to capitalize on opportunities when presented and help the team win. 4 Pete Alonso hits his 250th home run, a three-run shot in the first inning of the Mets' 12-6 win over the Giants at Citi Field on Aug. 2, 2025. JASON SZENES/ NY POST Advertisement 'I think the record is obviously something that is really special and it's meaningful, but now in the heat of it, I'm not really too focused on that or worried about it. I'm just focused on wins. We're in the thick of a playoff race right now, and I'll think of all the other stuff in the offseason, whenever I have time. Right now, this is all team-focused.' Alonso, who also doubled and walked as the Mets halted their four-game losing streak, needed 957 games to reach 250 homers. That's nearly a full season faster (157 fewer games) than Strawberry, who had his uniform number 18 retired by the Mets last season. Rockies closer Seth Halvorsen suffers elbow injury in win over Pirates

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies' win over Pittsburgh on Saturday was dampened with an elbow injury to closer Seth Halvorsen. The hard-throwing right-hander left after tossing five pitches in the ninth inning, and the initial outlook isn't encouraging. 'It don't look good,' interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. 'I'll let you know (Sunday).' Halvorsen, who leads the Rockies with 11 saves, was facing Pirates pinch hitter Spencer Horwitz to open the ninth and Colorado leading 8-4. He was ahead 0-2 in the count and then threw three straight balls, the last one at 99 mph. Immediately after that pitch he bent over and dangled his right arm, prompting Rockies head trainer Keith Duggar to jog to the mound to check on him. After a brief discussion Halvorsen left the game, with Dugan Darnell coming on to finish the 8-5 win. Schaeffer said Halvorsen wasn't experiencing problems entering Saturday's game. 'Not recently, but he was feeling something a while back, but he's been good for a while,' Schaeffer said. Halvorsen has been Colorado's main closer since the beginning of June and had converted nine of his last 10 opportunities, including his last six. Three of those have come after the All-Star break, which has helped the Rockies post a 7-6 record. Colorado, which is 30-80, is trying to avoid setting a modern era record for losses set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who were 41-121. recommended Item 1 of 3

Yankees Just Restored World Series Hopes With Long-Awaited David Bednar Trade

Yankees Just Restored World Series Hopes With Long-Awaited David Bednar Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees addressed a significant need on Thursday, swinging a deal for resurgent Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar only hours before the trade deadline. Impressively, the Yankees did it without giving up any of their true top prospects, like Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz or Carlos Lagrange. The Yankees gave up No. 8 prospect (according to MLB Pipeline) in catcher/first baseman Rafael Flores, another catcher in No. 14 Edgleen Perez, and outfielder Brian Sanchez. Bednar should instantly become the Yankees' closer, ending the carousel between Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. Following an early-season demotion to Triple-A, Bednar owns a 1.70 ERA and a 50-8 K-BB ratio in 37 innings since April 19. In Bednar, the Yankees are getting a strong and proven relief arm in what has been arguably the biggest hole in the Yankees' roster. Relievers such as Fernando Cruz, Mark Leiter Jr., and Jake Cousins have all hit the injured list this season, and the rest of a theoretically good bullpen have not met expectations. Bednar's arrival allows Weaver and Williams to finally have consistent roles. We'll see what else the Yankees have planned, because it certainly feels like they're not done. As of publication, the Pirates still hadn't traded starter Mitch Keller or reliever Dennis Santana, who spent time with the Yankees last season. Alternatively, the Yankees could fire up trade talks with the Marlins for Sandy Alcantara and/or Edward Cabrera. However, the team appears resolved not to trade No. 4 prospect Spencer Jones, who has reportedly been a top ask for Miami. The Yankees might also be tempted to talk with the Twins on reliever Griffin Jax, which would complete a very productive trade deadline for New York. Ultimately, the Yankees just unlocked a new set of paths for their entire pitching staff. Next up? Possibly moving promising starter Cam Schlittler to the bullpen with the impending return of Luis Gil on story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 31, 2025, where it first appeared.
