Former NITI Aayog CEO Kant praises Debrigarh as model for community-led ecotourism
Kant engaged with community members involved in the ecotourism initiative and praised the grassroots-driven model that has transformed the lives of over 85 forest-dependent families, who are actively involved in activities such as jungle safaris, Hirakud cruise, trekking, kayaking and storytelling sessions on wildlife.
Notably, each community member earns between Rs 13,000 and Rs 15,000 per month and 40 per cent of the workforce comprises women including female safari drivers and eco-guides. The sanctuary boasts of 20 tourist cottages, including six stargazing rooms with glass roofs, offering a unique overnight experience in nature.
'The DFO has done a commendable job in Debrigarh. I have seen almost every eco-tourism project in India, but the best one has been implemented here. The participation of the local community is the most impressive initiative. Considering the infrastructure development taking place in this area, it is necessary to increase the green cover here. If the efforts continue in this direction, Sambalpur can become the greenest district of India,' Kant said after the visit.
He also shared his appreciation of Debrigarh's ecotourism initiative on social media platform X. 'I visited the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha today and was delighted to see the wonderful work done in terms of community participation. This is by far the best example of local community operating and managing the entire Ecotourism project. The credit goes entirely to a young lady Forest Service officer Anshu Pragyan Das for driving this. Amazing work!' he said in his post.
Kant was accompanied by RDC (Northern Division) Sachin Ramchandra Jadhav, Sambalpur collector Siddheswar Baliram Bondar, Bargarh collector Aditya Goyal, SP Prahalad Sahai Meena and divisional forest officer (DFO), wildlife Anshu Pragyan Das. Notably, Debrigarh ecotourism recorded its highest-ever revenue of Rs 5.11 crore in 2024-25.

One tunnel under Bharatmala Pariyojana completed in Koraput
1 2 Koraput: One of the two state-of-the-art tunnels under construction in Koraput as part of the greenfield six-lane Raipur-Visakhapatnam economic corridor has been completed, marking a significant milestone in the ambitious Rs 16,000-crore Bharatmala Pariyojana project. The completed tunnel spanning 3.43 km and connecting Baraja to Kandili, is one of Odisha's first three-lane tunnels with a 16-metre diameter, said Venkat Rao, project director, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Koraput. The second tunnel, stretching 2.87 km between Kurli and Ampavalli under Sunki panchayat, is expected to be completed by Dec 2025. "These tunnels are built using the most advanced technology in the country and are equipped with ventilators, modern lighting, safety systems, high-resolution surveillance cameras, footpath and traffic signages among others to ensure commuter safety," Rao added. Official sources said out of the 124-km stretch passing through Koraput district over 90 per cent of which is already complete, the tunnel segment is integral to ensuring smooth travel across the hilly terrain. Once completed, travel time from Koraput to Visakhapatnam will drop from seven hours to under two, and Koraput to Raipur from 10 hours to under four. Officials said the entire Koraput segment is on track for completion by Jan 2026. Beyond Koraput, the highway will traverse 116 km through Nabarangpur district at an estimated cost of Rs 3,159 crore. Other portions include 125 km in Chhattisgarh and 100 km in Andhra Pradesh. To enhance commuter convenience, world-class wayside amenities are being developed every 50 km, including food courts, restaurants, fuel stations, vehicle repair shops, 24x7 medical clinics, EV charging points, and hygienic restrooms.

CM lays foundation stone for ‘Gaurav Udyan'
1 2 Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday unveiled the foundation stone of the 'Deshratna Dr Rajendra Prasad Bihar Gaurav Udyan', also known as the Waste-to-Wonder Theme Park, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 14.98 crore. Before the foundation stone ceremony, the CM paid floral tributes at the memorial site of Deshratna Dr Rajendra Prasad. While laying the foundation stone, Nitish asked the official to ensure that the Waste-to-Wonder Theme Park is constructed near the memorial site of India's first President Dr Rajendra Prasad, in a well-planned manner. "This park will greatly benefit the local community. On one side of the theme park is the memorial site of Dr Rajendra Prasad and on the other side is the J P Ganga Path, making the view quite scenic," Nitish said. "It is noteworthy that the urban development and housing department has approved the construction of the theme park on 10 acres of land between the memorial site of Dr Rajendra Prasad and the J P Ganga Path, at a cost of Rs 14.98 crore. This park will showcase various elements of Bihar's proud history and culture. The theme park will feature inspiring stories of Bihar's great personalities such as Aryabhata, Chanakya, Emperor Ashoka, Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan and Dashrath Manjhi," a communique issued from the chief minister's office (CMO) said. "The theme park will also display the state's architectural heritage, including Nalanda, Vikramshila, religious stupas, temples and mausoleums. Additionally, there will be arrangements for food and drink for tourists and the construction of a playground. Moreover, a grand memorial complex will be built at the current memorial site of Dr Rajendra Prasad in his honor," the communique said. Land conversion hurdles stall RR MoUs grounding
Jaipur: The tourism department Wednesday held a meeting with the MoU holders of the Rising Rajasthan investment summit to address their difficulties and fast-track the grounding of projects. The department invited around 100 investors who already have land in their possession but were unable to implement the projects. Many investors at the event, whom TOI spoke with, said that land conversion has become a major hurdle even though they are eager to set up these projects and not lose business opportunities. "I have been waiting for the past seven months to get my land conversion approval despite having all the required documents," said an MoU holder from Bhilwara who is setting up a 350-room hotel with an investment of around Rs 80 crore. Similarly, a young entrepreneur who signed an MoU to set up an entertainment park in Bear is also facing land conversion issues. "We have land, but we cannot get it converted. The project has been stuck for over six months," the investor said. Out of the 1,600-add MoU holders who proposed setting up tourism units, 140 have land in their possession. Yadav said the priority is to get these projects cleared first, which they want to achieve before September. He said he has also written to the district collectors to speed up approval processes. During the Rising Rajasthan investment summit, the tourism department signed over 1,600 MoUs worth Rs 1.38 lakh crore.
