Woman sentenced to 30 days in crash that killed Northmont senior, injured 5
Kelsey R. Minor, 20, was ordered to serve 30 days in the Montgomery County Jail and spend five years on probation, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office.
She also must complete 500 hours of community service and had her driver's license suspended for three years.
If she violates the terms of her probation, Minor will face nine months to three years in prison.
Minor pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular homicide on May 8. Three counts of vehicular assault were dismissed.
The prosecution sought the maximum sentence of three years and a lifetime suspension of her driver's license.
In a sentencing memo Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Matthew DeRosa noted Minor was driving 74 miles per hour on Salem Avenue in a 35 miles per hour zone.
A blood draw at the hospital also showed Minor had alcohol in her blood, according to the memo.
"Her actions constitute the worst form of the offense," DeRosa wrote. "A sentence of 36 months and lifetime license suspension is the only way to protect the community from future criminal acts of defendant and deter her from further criminal action."
The defense sought community control sanctions, noting she had no driving violations prior to and after the crash.
Attorney Anthony A. Abboud wrote Minor's decisions that night have haunted her.
"Kelsey struggled to grapple with the loss of her friend due to her actions that night," a sentencing memo read. "She has carried guilt, remorse and regret to this day. Kelsey understood her choices that night not only impacted her life, but her family's life, her friend's life and most importantly the family of Christopher Gwynne."
Minor wrote a letter to Judge Steven K. Dankof saying there isn't a day she doesn't think of the crash.
"I never would intentionally hurt anyone," she wrote. "Losing Chris has caused so much pain, depression, regret. I would never want anyone to go through the pain his family and mine have gone through.
Around 1:30 a.m. on April 30, 2023, Minor was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt on Salem Avenue near Harvard Boulevard when she lost control, according to a crash report.
The car began to spin and went off the right side of the road before hitting an RTA pole.
Minor had five passengers in the car, including four people in the back row.
Chris Gwynne, 19, of Englewood, was in the middle of the back seat, and died at the scene.
Minor and the other four passengers were transported to Miami Valley Hospital with injuries.

Michigan man sentenced to 58 years for sexual assault of a minor
A Branch County, Michigan, man will spend at least 58 years in prison for the sexual assault of a minor, the Michigan Attorney General's Office said. Alex New, 55, was convicted in June on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The 55-year-old was sentenced earlier this week to 25 to 50 years in prison for each count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and 8 to 15 years for second-degree criminal sexual conduct. New was initially charged by Branch County prosecutors in 2016, but left the state and eluded law enforcement until he was found in Florida and extradited to Branch County in June 2024 as part of Operation Survivor Justice. New was extradited as part of Operation Survivor Justice, which is a partnership with the Michigan Attorney General's Office, county prosecutors and the U.S. Marshals to find, arrest, and return to Michigan fugitives with outstanding criminal sexual assault warrants. "Operation Survivor Justice continues to be a vital partnership, ensuring those who commit sexual assault face the consequences of their actions," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. "I commend the courage of the survivor in coming forward, and I am grateful to the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the prosecutors in my office for their work securing this significant sentence." After serving his prison sentence, New will be subject to lifetime electronic monitoring.

Allegheny County man charged in connection with sexual assault of a minor
An East Deer Township man has been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a minor. The Allegheny Valley Police Department responded to a 911 call for a report of a sexual assault involving a 12-year-old female just after 10 p.m. on July 28. Allegheny Valley police determined that the alleged assault occurred on a walking trail near the Allegheny River. The Allegheny County Police Department's General Investigations Unit was subsequently requested to initiate an investigation. Detectives learned the female victim and a second juvenile female were walking along the trail and looking for an exit when they encountered a group of people along the riverbank. Witnesses say an adult man, later identified as 40-year-old Brian Ball, offered to escort the girls off the trail, adding that Ball allegedly offered the girls marijuana before sexually assaulting the 12-year-old victim multiple times along the trail. "It's very disturbing. It makes me want to not go down there anymore," said resident Emily Hughes. Hughes lives near the recreational trail in East Deer Township. She says she takes her young daughter on a walk here almost every day. When she found out a 12-year-old was allegedly assaulted near the river, she was shocked. "It's quiet around here. You wouldn't believe it," Hughes said. "You never know anymore." After the incident was reported, detectives began surveilling the trail and conducted multiple interviews to identify Ball. Ball is facing multiple charges, including indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, indecent exposure and unlawful contact with a minor. "Nowadays, it's happening in our backyards. It's scary," neighbor Marie Espen said. He is currently in the Allegheny County Jail and due in court later this month.
