Orlando Pirates-Saleng saga reaches new low: It's officially over?

Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi believes the Monnapule Saleng saga played a role in the club's Champions League and Nedbank Cup failure.
'What I think almost ruined things was the Saleng matter,' he said. 'If we didn't have that issue, I think we'd be talking a different story because you'd know we have depth on the left and on the right.'
'Right now, if [Mohau] Nkota isn't playing, I don't know who is supposed to be in that position.'
The 27-year-old has caused a string among the Orlando Pirates ranks since disappearing in early December over salary demands the club were unwilling to pay. Saleng hasn't played for the Soweto giants since, prompting speculation of an offseason exit, which seems all but certain.
Lekgwathi doesn't see depth as being Orlando Pirates' peril this season, saying, 'I think we have depth in the squad; In previous seasons, I have complained about the number of players in each position, but now you can see it.'
'For example, the defenders, Tapelo [Xoki] came in, he did good, when he's out [Nkosinathi] Sibisi is there, and now [Mbekezeli] Mbokazi is bossing the backline, and we still have the likes of [Olisa] Ndah and [Innocent] Maela on the bench. I think there is competition and a healthy one at that in all the positions.

New coach says Orlando Pirates star needed love

Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng appears to be in a happy space. He's smiling, confident, and back in the Betway Premiership spotlight. The new surroundings have done wonders for a player once weighed down by uncertainty. At Orbit College, Saleng has rediscovered that spark. The loaned Orlando Pirates winger, whose career seemed stuck in limbo just months ago, is said to be looking like the player who lit up the league not so long ago. Kaizer Chiefs news: Goalkeeper and R1 million cash Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng during his last game under his former coach Jose Riveiro in the CAF Champions League. Image: Goal 'With Saleng, we're just giving him the love and making sure that he fully enjoys the game again,' Orbit College coach Pogiso Makhoye told FARPost . 'So we are ensuring he's surrounded by happiness, and I think the boy is enjoying the game. Kaizer Chiefs updates: New full back and winger 'I can say he's feeling loved again, and everyone is just making things easy for him to accommodate him. I can say, come the start of the season, you are going to see the difference because he's happy,' concluded Makhoye. Tshegofatso Mabasa exit rumours grow as Orlando Pirates struggle without star striker

Left out Orlando Pirates' top goalscorer for the last two seasons, Tshegofatso Mabasa, was absent from the squad in their league loss to Sekhukhune United on Saturday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Orlando Pirates are facing the real possibility of losing star striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, with clubs across the continent circling. Despite being Pirates' top goalscorer for the last two seasons, Mabasa has not made the matchday squad for any of the club's games so far this season. After leaving him out of the league opener against Sekhukhune United, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou explained that he was left out due to a selection decision. In his place, 22-year-old Boitumelo Radiopane was selected to start, with 23-year-old Yanela Mbuthuma playing off the bench. The absence of Mabasa has led to struggles for Pirates. They were beaten 1-0 by Sekhukhune last weekend and lost 2-1 to Marumo Gallants on Tuesday, increasing the pressure on the new coach. Next Stay Close ✕ These early setbacks have coincided with speculation over Mabasa's future, with his agent, Gary Cassisa, confirming there is interest in the 28-year-old. "Yes, there has been interest from Mas Fez," said Cassisa. For a side already short on goals, losing their most reliable finisher could prove disastrous. 'But Tshegofatso Mabasa remains committed to Orlando Pirates only. He is closing in on the club's all-time leading goalscorer record and would like to make history with the Soweto giants," said the agent, as quoted by Soccer Laduma. With the club taking on Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals of the MTN8 this weekend, Pirates will need to be at their best as they look to win the competition for a fourth straight season. Whether Mabasa is involved remains to be seen. Pirates' fate in the MTN8 could hinge on how they cope without their talisman. If Mabasa is absent, Ouaddou will need his squad to step up and find new ways to create and convert chances. The clash with Sundowns will not only test the team's depth and resilience but could also set the tone for how Pirates navigate a season shadowed by uncertainty over one of their most influential players.
