'High degree of suspicion established, not enough to convict': NIA court acquits all 7 accused in Malegaon blast case
Six people were killed and over 100 were injured when an explosive device strapped on a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon, a town in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008, during the holy month of Ramadan.
While pronouncing the verdict, Special Judge AK Lahoti of the NIA court observed that the prosecution has failed to bring any "cogent evidence" and therefore the accused deserved the benefit of doubt.
"Upon comprehensive evaluation, the prosecution has failed to bring any cogent evidence and the evidence is riddled with inconsistencies," the court noted.
"There can be strong suspicion but mere suspicion is not enough to punish them. The high degree of suspicion is established but not enough to convict them. Hence the court said that it has given them the benefit of doubt," the court said.
"Terrorism has no religion but conviction cannot be based on moral grounds," the court remarked.
The court passed the order after a lengthy trial in the case that spanned nearly 17 years.
Lt Col Purohit, Pragya Thakur, Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Sameer Kulkarni had been under trial in the case under the provisions the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Regarding the charges against Pragya Thakur, the court noted that the prosecution had failed to establish that the exploded bike belonged to her and observed that she had become a 'Sadhvi' and "left all material things" two years before the blast.
Serial number of the two-wheeler's chassis was not completely recovered by the forensic experts and therefore, the prosecution failed to prove that the bike in fact belonged to her, the court remarked.

Every detail behind it needs to be brought out. Research is going on...99 per cent we will shoot on real locations. We will do a recce soon," he said. Script is being developed with investigative reports According to the press note, the makers stated that the script is being developed with inputs from investigative reports, court documents, and real testimonies to ensure that the narrative remains grounded and respectful. The film is slated to go on floors by late 2025, with more details about the cast and shooting schedule expected to be revealed soon. About Malegaon blast The Malegaon blast tragedy took place on September 29, 2008 in which six people were killed and 95 others injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle detonated near a mosque in Malegaon City's Bhikku Chowk. Originally, 11 people were accused in the case; however, the court ultimately framed charges against 7, including former MP Sadhvi Pragya. The Mumbai NIA court on July 31 acquitted all seven accused of being involved in the 2008 blasts in Malegaon, with the court saying the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The 2008 Malegaon blast case was transferred to the NIA in 2011 from the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). After a 17-year-long wait and examination of hundreds of witnesses, the NIA special court acquitted all seven people accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act and all other charges. Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik passes away
Synopsis Satyapal Malik, former governor of four Indian states and a prominent Jat farmer leader, passed away at 79 in Delhi. A veteran politician, Malik held posts in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and various parties before joining the BJP. Known for his outspoken views, he served as governor during key events like the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir. ANI Satypal Malik, who served as governor of four states in five years from 2017 to 2022 and was often in the news for his controversial remarks, passed away on Tuesday. Known as a farmer leader who began his political journey in Bharatiya Kranti Dal and served as MLA in Uttar Pradesh in the 1970 before becoming a member of Lok Sabha and then the Rajya Sabha. Malik was 79. After a long stint with the parties across the political spectrum barring the Left, Malik joined the BJP and contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. A prominent farmer leader who enjoyed wide support in his Jat community, Malik was often fielded by BJP to reach out to the voters in western UP between 2004 and 2014 when the party was in the Opposition. In 2012, he was appointed as one of the national Vice Presidents of BJP. Under the Narendra Modi-led NDA government that was formed in 2014, Malik was appointed governor of Bihar in September 2017. Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh were made Union Territories and Malik served as Lieutenant Governor till October when he was made Governor of Goa. As governor of Goa he said governors usually have no real work and are known playing golf and sipping wine. After his stint as governor ended in 2022, he made several bitter remarks against Prime Minister Modi on the Pulwama terror attack of February 2019. He had several conspiracy theories about the blast that killed 40 had been ailing for some months and passed away at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in the national capital. Malik became an MLA in 1974 from Baghpat in UP from Charan Singh-led Bharatiya Kranti Dal. He was elected to Rajya Sabha for two terms in 1980 and 1986 but quit in 1989 during his second term to become a Lok Sabha member from Aligarh. His term in the Lower House ended in 1991 when the next general elections were held.A party hopper, Malik was with BKD, Janata Dal, Congress, Lok Dal, Samajwadi Party and BJP at different points in his long career.

Ramchander Rao has cautioned the people about the ruling Congress which is 'dividing people in terms of castes and communities and has conveniently buried the guarantees given before the elections to various sections of the society'. 'It is total failure of the State government as no other State has been experiencing any such shortfall. The agriculture department's lackadaisical attitude in controlling the black marketers has led to the situation where the blame is being sought to be shifted onto the Centre for the shortage though the latter has been providing subsidy worth thousands of crores. The government is playing with the lives of farmers,' he maintained. Meanwhile, party vice president G. Manohar Reddy has announced that a national flag hoisting in every house programme will be held from August 9 to August 16 where the party cadre will take out rallies hailing the role of the armed forces in 'Operation Sindoor', pay homage to the martyrs, felicitate veteran soldiers, hold photo exhibitions and will distribute the tricolour to households.
