Killer on day release stabs colleague then throws himself off iconic cathedral
Emanuele De Maria allegedly stabbed a colleague before scaling Milan's famous Duomo cathedral and hurling himself 'dozens of metres' from the Gothic landmark in front of horrified tourists
A convicted murderer on day release stabbed a colleague before plunging to his death from Milan 's iconic Duomo cathedral in front of stunned tourists.
The man, believed to be 35-year-old Emanuele De Maria, allegedly attacked the coworker - then scaled the cathedral's terraces and hurled himself from the Gothic landmark on Sunday afternoon. Local reports say De Maria fell 'dozens of metres' from the north walkway of the Duomo di Milano, landing in the busy square below just after 2pm. Tourists looked on in horror as the man 'leapt without hesitation', according to Italian newspapers Il Mattino and Ansa. He died instantly.
Authorities identified the body using an ID card found in his pocket and distinctive tattoos, reports Corriere della Sera. Officers then swiftly cordoned off the area, closed the cathedral terraces, and ushered shocked visitors away as forensic teams examined the scene.
De Maria, originally from Naples, had been serving a 14-year sentence for the 2016 murder of a 23-year-old woman in Castel Volturno. But for nearly two years, he'd been working part-time at a four-star hotel near Milan's central train station under a prison work-release scheme from Bollate prison in Milan.
The city's icnoic Duomo catherdral is one of Europe's most visited landmarks, drawing over five million visitors each year with its awe-inspiring Gothic architecture and panoramic city views.
Towering above the city with more than 130 spires and 3,400 statues, the landmark is the largest in Italy and took nearly six centuries to complete. At its heart lies the golden Madonnina statue - a symbol of Milan standing proudly above the highest spire.
De Maria's dramatic death came less than 48 hours after he allegedly stabbed coworker Hani Fouad Abdelghaffar Nasr five times outside the hotel early Saturday morning. The attack sparked a manhunt involving both State Police and Carabinieri.
Police were meanwhile also searching for 50-year-old Chamila Wijesuriya, another hotel worker who vanished on Friday. She told her husband she was heading to the gym - but CCTV later showed her entering the metro with De Maria. Her phone was later discovered dumped in a bin at a subway station.
On Sunday, her body was found in a pond in Parco Nord, a large park in northern Milan. Investigators are now piecing together De Maria's final hours and working to establish the full sequence of events.

Immigration crackdown leads to chaotic scenes as ICE touts arrests
Immigration authorities raided a popular San Diego Italian restaurant before the Friday dinner rush, arresting several kitchen workers, while community members confronted agents, according to video shared by a local CBS station. As heavily armed agents entered the restaurant, local residents screamed at them and filmed the scene. The agents wore tactical gear, including bulletproof vests emblazoned with the Homeland Security Investigations logo. "The agents fired sound grenades, flash-bang grenades, at the crowd," Pedro Rios, director of the Quaker American Friends Service Committee's U.S.-Mexico Border Program, told CBS. Todd Lyons, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told FOX News that agents were doing their law enforcement duty during the raid. "We should be supported, not being called Nazis, not being villainized," he said. Immigrants arrested at scheduled hearings Earlier last week, ICE agents were seen arresting immigrants directly after their scheduled immigration hearings at a San Antonio, Texas, courthouse - doubling down on a tactic that has caused an outcry among immigrant advocates. "Families are being targeted at their most vulnerable time - attending their scheduled immigration hearings for what they believe to be progress in their cases," according to a statement by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. The statement links to a video that appears to show ICE agents arresting a mother alongside four children inside the courthouse, including a minor with his hands zip-tied behind his back. Another video outside the same courthouse, undated but posted Friday, May 30, by advocacy group Unidos Podemos, showed the emotional scene of two mothers and a child being loaded by plainclothes agents into the narrow chamber of a vehicle outfitted to carry prisoners. The child stands on the bumper, his arms outstretched. He says in Spanish, "It's OK, Mom, I'm here. It's OK." ICE publicizes criminal arrests during crackdown ICE, which has a significant social media presence, has largely refrained from sharing emotional or chaotic arrest videos and instead posts mugshots of arrested immigrants with serious criminal records. The agency publicized its recent arrests of a Honduran man facing burglary and sexual battery charges, a convicted sex offender from El Salvador and a Venezuelan woman convicted of felonies in California and wanted on other charges in New York.

Body of British hiker, 36, found months after going missing in Italian Dolomites
The body of a British hiker who went missing in the Dolomites on New Year's Day has been found by mountain rescuers. Aziz Ziriat, 36, was last heard from on January 1 while hiking with a friend, Samuel Harris, in the Italian mountain range. Samuel, 35, was found dead just over a week after the pair went missing, his body covered in snow. Aziz's phone, bank card and glasses were found close to his friend's body. This morning (May 31) Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue teams said they have found Aziz's body, and are working to recover his remains. The friends, who both lived in London, were planning to climb a 3,000m mountain on January 1. Aziz filmed a video and shared it with family and friends on the day he disappeared, in which he said: 'Happy New Year! Woken up to some delightful sunshine, blue skies. 'There has not been a cloud in the sky since we got here, which is slightly unnerving but also quite jokes. 'I want to attack this today, get up into some of the 3,000 bits which are up yonder. 'Looking forward to a day scampering, we are not taking our packs today, for the last two days lugging up this God-forsaken valley, another day frolicking before schlepping over to the next valley.' But their families raised the alarm after they both missed their flight back to the UK on January 6. The Italian authorities began a search of the mountain, but their efforts were hampered by heavy snow and strong winds. They found Samuel's body on January 8 at the base of the Care Alto peak and suggested he may have fallen from rocks above. Rescuers traced their steps by tracking their mobile phones and managed to find both of their backpacks – but they found no trace of Aziz. Friends and family described Aziz and Samuel as experienced hikers and climbers who have faced harsh conditions before. Speaking soon after Samuel's body was found, his friend and business partner Spencer Jones paid tribute, saying: 'To say I am devastated would be an understatement, and I have no words to fully describe how I am feeling at the moment. 'The search is ongoing for our good friend Aziz Ziriat, so for now, I want to focus on Sam. 'He was an amazing friend of 23 years, ever since our school days. 'He was probably the most knowledgeable person I have ever known, and building the business with him has been an incredible journey.'
