Scam victim turns whistleblower: Hyderabad MBA graduate ends influencers' 'betting' innings; helps cops bust racket after losing Rs 50 lakh, friend to suicide
HYDERABAD: After losing over Rs 50 lakh and a close friend, an MBA graduate from Hyderabad has turned whistleblower helping cops' crackdown on online cricket betting. In June, the Cyberabad police filed two FIRs and arrested five online influencers for allegedly luring thousands of Telugu youth to sites promoting this illegal trade.
The FIRs were lodged based on a month-long investigation carried out by the 27-year-old who recently returned to the city from Italy. He has two master's degrees — in management and IT — and decided to take on the fraudsters after he himself fell prey to the menace. His friend, who lost Rs 60 lakh to betting, died by suicide.

'I had not only invested my own money but even borrowed funds from friends to feed my addiction,' said the whistleblower sharing how it all started in Dec 2023 when he and a friend, while browsing Instagram reels in Italy, came across advertisements offering a 'guaranteed toss-fix' for cricket matches.
'I clicked the link and joined the Telegram channel 'The Mars Toss,' he said.
There he found one of the accused, Pottavathini Deepak, offering cricket match outcomes and encouraging members to place bets through offshore websites recommended by him.
'Unable to not cope with the losses, manipulation, and lies from influencers, my friend died by suicide at his residence in Bhopal in Dec 2024,' the whistleblower said.
Shaken, the Hyderabad youth started investigating the influencers' activities. He joined their Tele g ram channels and identified patterns. 'All of them are deceitful. They convince victims that they have access to cricket teams and can fix tosses and matches,' the whistleblower told TOI.
He added: 'Occasionally, some predictions come true leading them to create reels boasting their fabricated successes. They work for various betting sites, receiving fixed monthly payments up to Rs 10 lakh depending on their social media and Telegram channel followers.
They actively promote betting websites.'
Posing as a representative of betting sites, he contacted influencers and obtained their personal details. With this evidence, he approached Miyapur inspector K Kranthi Kumar in June who directed him to cybercrime police.
'All I want is to prevent more people from falling victim to deceit. They are knowingly cheating lakhs of Telugu youth. I am grateful to Cyberabad police for acting swiftly and arresting some of the fraudsters,' the young man told TOI.
'He played a proactive role in identifying the accused and bringing their details to our notice,' said a senior police official. A few initial bets were successful, so I continued and started investing more and more money. By May 2025, when I placed the last bets, I had lost over lakh

Special PMLA court takes cognizance of ED's third prosecution complaint in HDIL-PMC Bank scam
The Special Court (PMLA) in Mumbai has recently taken cognizance of the third supplementary prosecution complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate on June 4 against eight additional accused involved in offence of money laundering in the HDIL–PMC Bank scam in connection with the fraudulent acquisition of agricultural lands in Sindhudurg district. The court on July 25 also issued process in the matter, the ED said on Friday. The latest prosecution complaint alleges the role of HDIL promoters in laundering funds and acquiring agricultural land for the proposed (but never executed) Vijaydurg Port Project. It further strengthens the case by establishing the money trail from HDIL accounts for land acquisition in Sindhudurg through benamis, the ED stated. The central agency initiated money laundering probe in the case on the basis of FIR registered against Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan, Sarang Wadhawan, promoters of HDIL group, Joy Thomas, Waryam Singh (Directors of PMC Bank), and unknown other persons under sections of IPC, 1860. The agency's probe has revealed that HDIL and its group companies availed the OD (overdraft) loans from the PMC Bank without proper documentations & mortgages. The OD limit was enhanced from time to time in order to avoid them being classified as NPA, rather the bank capitalized the interest part and enhanced the OD limit to that extent. By this manner the subject accounts of the HDIL group remained standard and hence never declared as NPA. Investigation also revealed fabrication and falsification of PMC Bank's loan accounts by replacing 44 genuine NPA loan accounts of HDIL group with 21,049 fictitious accounts to deceive RBI and depositors. The first and main prosecution complaint was filed by ED in the matter on December 16, 2019, and two supplementary prosecution complaints on March 15, 2022, and May 23, 2023, respectively. Till date, ED has provisionally attached seized assets worth over Rs 772 crore in the case and filed multiple prosecution complaints.

Drone rumours claim life in UP: Moblynches beggar mistaken for thief
Bareilly: A 50-year-old unidentified man, who was mistaken for a "drone" thief, was lynched by a mob in Bhojipura area of Bareilly district around 8.30 pm on Thursday. Police said six to eight locals were involved in the brutal assault which left the victim -- presumed to be a "mentally-ill beggar" from some other village -- unconscious with severe head injuries and bruises all over the body. Hospital authorities later declared him dead. There has been a rising paranoia of "drone theft" in several parts of UP. Villagers have been conducting night patrols armed with sticks, torches and even airguns in response to low-flying drone sightings -- some of them rumours while a few others cases of unmanned aerial vehicles operated by govt departments for surveying or welfare work. Thursday night's incident is said to be the "first such death in the state caused by drone theft rumours". "The man, who was shabbily dressed, was slapped, kicked and punched several times by the locals. He was initially allowed to go, but again stopped by the same group when he didn't reveal his identity. When they again started assaulting him, a security guard alerted cops. However, by the time local police arrived, the man was already unconscious. We're trying to collect more details about him," Bhojipura SHO, Praveen Solanki, said on Friday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A local villager said that the man -- with 'Ram' inscribed on his head -- was spotted roaming in Memaura village under Bhojipura thana on Thursday evening. Fearing a potential theft due to recent rumours that thieves were using drones to recce an area before targeting houses, villagers raised an alarm and gathered to thrash him. The merciless assault eventually saw him collapse. SP (north) Mukesh Mishra told TOI: "Four accused — Nirdesh Kumar (34), Harprasad Singh (36), Charan Singh (28) and Vikas Kumar (29) — were arrested on Friday. An FIR under BNS sections 103 (murder), 115-2 (provoke breach of peace), 352 (criminal intimidation), 126 (wrongful restraint), among others, were registered against six named and two unnamed persons." The victim's body has been kept in a mortuary, Mishra said, adding, "We'll wait for 72 hours, as per norms, for someone to turn up and claim the body. If no one comes, we will conduct his postmortem and cremate him." Last month, too, a 20-year-old man was thrashed by a mob in Bareilly's Sirauli area after being mistaken for a "done thief". He was rushed to hospital and managed to survive. Similar incidents have been reported from several villages in Ghaziabad. Locals there took matters into their own hands, and armed themselves with rods and sticks after a string of circulated videos sparked fears of burglary recces being carried out with drones. TOI extensively reported some of these incidents. Sensing a law and order issue, UP police have now launched night patrols from 11 pm to 3 am in some areas, along with awareness drives with village heads, and created a "drone register to identify legitimate drone operators". Police clarified that drone use at night has been barred entirely to prevent further panic.
