Metsi's joins a crowded Columbus Italian scene
Our dining scene is getting another upscale Italian option — can it separate itself from the pack?
Dining the news: Last week, chef BJ Lieberman gave Columbus a sneak peek of his new concept, Metsi's, a "wood-fired Italian" restaurant in the Short North.
Lieberman is a James Beard nominee and one of our most visible chefs, helming Chapman's Eat Market and Ginger Rabbit.
The intrigue: He also opened Hiraeth, a short-lived fine dining concept at 36 E. Lincoln St. centered around its wood-fired oven.
A year after Hiraeth closed, Metsi's is taking over the space.
Yes, but: Chapman's hosted the preview, so we can't report on the vibes.
What I ate: A six-course prix fixe menu ($75).
The meal started with sourdough focaccia with a whipped ricotta dip and a Caesar salad.
For mains, guests shared two "dueling pastas" — cacio e pepe and amatriciana — and individually portioned osso bucco with polenta.
For dessert: tiramisu.
Best bites: Everything was tasty, but at this price point, I was slightly disappointed to be more excited by the starters than the pastas at an Italian restaurant.
The osso bucco, however, was fantastic and probably my highlight.
And they made a killer tiramisu.
The big picture: Metsi's joins a crowded Central Ohio Italian scene.
Columbus loves classics like Martini, Moretti's, Marcella's and Basi, as well as newer options like Speck, Cento and Pelino's.
💭 My thought bubble: During its short life, Hiraeth was easily my favorite Columbus restaurant.
📆 What's next: Metsi's aims to open in June.

A ‘White Lotus'-Inspired Coastal Italian Stunner Opens Inside the Thompson Palm Springs
Celebrity-drawing restaurateurs Marissa and Matt Hermer open their next restaurant, Bar Issi on June 6 inside the Thompson Hotel in Palm Springs, their first expansion outside of Los Angeles. With a similar color palette of Italian reds, blues, greens, and earth tones, Bar Issi's maximalist style, courtesy of Tom Parker of Fettle Design, is poised to become a beloved part of Palm Springs' dining scene. According to Marissa Hermer, the look and feel were inspired by the wildly popular Season 2 of HBO's the White Lotus , which took place on a luxe Sicilian resort, as well as San Luis Obispo's iconic overdesigned Madonna Inn with its floor-to-ceiling patterns and textures. Bar Issi's original inspiration comes from the short-lived Issima that opened as an indoor-outdoor ground-floor restaurant inside the West Hollywood La Peer hotel, serving chic pastas, pizza, and wood-fired seasonal produce. In October 2024, the Hermers also opened French Mediterranean restaurant Chez Mia in the old Ago space on Melrose, cementing their status in West Hollywood (Olivetta is undergoing renovations, while their first restaurant, the Draycott, closed at the end of 2024). Issima eventually morphed into Charbel Hayek's Ladyhawk, and the Hermers brought the Issima concept over to the desert, where it somehow feels more lived in. The 180-seat space joins the eastern Mediterranean-inflected Lola Rose Grand Mezze and Hall Napa Valley Tasting Room on the Thompson property. Marissa says she always prefers to serve the 'kind of food I like to eat,' with old money coastal Italian fare intersected with Californian sensibility. Everything is shareable, unfussy, and tasty — never too challenging but also a few steps beyond the basic. Hamachi carpaccio comes with truffle, yuzu, and ponzu, while a Sun Gold tomato gazpacho arrives just in time for Palm Springs' sweltering months. Squash blossoms filled with feta cheese and ricotta provide a warm appetizer while shrimp linguini with Calabrian chile gets a bright spritz of lemon. Wood-fired pizza ranges classic pepperoni with 24-month Parmesan and roasted mushrooms with fontina, taleggio, and thyme. Easy mains include lamb chops, roasted salmon with peas and yogurt, or citrus-marinated skirt steak. Given it's the second time the Hermers have occupied a hotel space, Bar Issi's versatile menu and fun-first approach should play well with its key location in Downtown Palm Springs, which already boasts a vibrant nightlife scene. Though located nowhere near an actual coastline, Bar Issi's escapist ambience and party-like atmosphere fit the bill for the Thompson Hotel. Bar Issi is open 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sunday 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner. Friday to Sunday, it'll serve brunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. with bar happy hour in between brunch and dinner. It'll be located inside the Thompson Hotel Palm Springs at 410 N. Beckham scores a winner with the royal circle
David Beckham looks set to be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, but the ex-footballer has already become a very visible part of the royal circle. It can feel sometimes, in football terms, as if Beckham has been man-marking the royals, as he's become an ever-present at royal occasions. The Chelsea Flower Show, a Buckingham Palace state banquet, an Italian dinner at Highgrove, charity events, have all seen the Beckhams in the line-up of guests to meet the royals. Last month, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, wore a dress designed by Victoria Beckham at a British Fashion Council event. There is an independent honours committee that considers who should get awards such as knighthoods, rather than the royals. But if he becomes "Sir David", the ceremony won't be the first time he'll have met the royals. There is already a close relationship. At the recent Chelsea Flower Show, a conversation between the King and Queen and Beckham seemed to hint at birthday gifts being exchanged. "Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses," Queen Camilla seemed to be saying about this flowering relationship. It's not just roses he's cultivating, as David Beckham has some new shared passions with the royals, a long way from his days as a footballer. He swapped "bee-keeping tips" with King Charles at a meeting at his Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire last year. His iconic sporting status is strong enough to attract public attention and he's supported many different causes. For an air ambulance fundraiser last year, it was Beckham that Prince William asked to help successfully raise £15m. "I had to hide my excitement a little bit," said Beckham afterwards about being asked to get involved. It was once considered important to keep honours a secret until they were officially announced, but details of this award seems to have emerged early, even though there is no official confirmation from the Cabinet Office, the government department that oversees honours. The news of "Sir David" might raise concerns among other sports, who will be looking out for their own stars in next week's honours. Rugby league authorities and supporters have complained that their sport has never had a single knighthood or damehood in 130 years. There have also been challenges about whether top honours are being given to the most deserving. But in terms of David Beckham's long wait for a knighthood - if they thought it was all over, it is now.
