Young man (24) accused of bridge attack held Algerian in headlock during stabbing, court told

A young man allegedly held an Algerian national in a headlock in Dublin city centre on Monday while a second attacker stabbed and critically injured him, a court heard. Abdul Kouadria (24), with an address at Gardiner Street, Dublin 1 and previously of Richmond Road, Dublin 3, was refused bail by Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court on Thursday. Advertisement The Irish-Algerian accused was charged with assault causing harm to the man who remains in intensive care at the Mater Hospital after he suffered life-threatening injuries at Rosie Hackett Bridge, Eden Quay, Dublin 1 on Monday afternoon. Objecting to bail, Detective Garda Sean Dineen cited the seriousness of the case and submitted that the accused was a flight risk. He mentioned that Mr Kouadria had been born in Ireland but mainly lived outside the country and returned about three years ago. He said there was an altercation at 4.30pm on Monday, and according to onlookers, the accused and the injured man "were engaged in a scuffle on the bridge." It was alleged Mr Kouadria "placed him in a headlock and dragged him on the ground," and another man approached. Advertisement It was unclear who brought the knife to the scene, but witnesses purportedly saw the second alleged attacker stab the man using several stabbing and slashing motions. The detective said the Garda position was that the critical injuries were a result of a "joint enterprise assault", inflicted by the accused and a second male. It was alleged that Mr Kouadria took the man's jumper and walked off. His runners have been seized and subject to analysis, and Garda divers recovered the knife from the Liffey and it will be examined. Advertisement CCTV evidence has been harvested, the court heard. Detective Garda Dineen said that while Mr Kouadria was born in Ireland, he had only lived here since 2023. Defence solicitor Kelly Breen said the case was at a very early stage, and the evidence could be subject to cross-examination in the correct forum. In exchanges with Detective Garda Dineen, she said her client was not alleged to have been brandishing the knife in the CCTV footage. Advertisement He replied: "No, but he holds the injured party in a headlock while the second male stabs the injured party." The solicitor accepted that Mr Kouadria had been abroad, adding that he had been in Saudi Arabia, where his father lived. She submitted that her client had a presumption of innocence and bail, and although the charge was very serious, strict conditions could be imposed. The court heard there were issues over his residence, and the detective said the accused used a Dublin 9 address but had been accessing homeless services at Gardiner Street. The solicitor asked the court to consider fixing bail, subject to him offering a permanent address, obeying a curfew, surrendering travel documents, and providing a contact phone number. Advertisement Judge Finan highlighted that the accused enjoyed the presumption of innocence. However, she held that Detective Garda Dineen made a very cogent application, and she refused to grant bail. The accused, who did not address the court, was remanded in custody to appear again next week while gardaí seek directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions. On Wednesday, a 31-year-old man accused of inflicting severe knife slashing wounds during the same incident was also denied bail. Adel Attal, from Algeria but living in Ireland for two years, and with an address in State accommodation on Henry Street, Mallow, Co Cork, was charged with assault causing harm and brandishing a knife as a weapon during the incident. His application to be released revealed that the injured man suffered serious stab wounds to his stomach, back, and legs, requiring emergency surgery.

Man arrested after electric bike, pedestrian and car collision leaves teen dead in Sheffield

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 16-year-old boy died following a collision between an electric bike, a pedestrian and a car in Sheffield, police have said. Emergency services responded shortly after 4.50pm on Wednesday to reports of an accident in Staniforth Road in the Darnall area of Sheffield. Police have said it is understood that a grey Audi drove towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider. The car continued to travel following the crash with the electric bike and was further involved in a collision with a pedestrian. The driver of the Audi failed to stop at the scene. A 16-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital. Despite emergency treatment, he died as a result of his injuries. The boy's family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. An 18-year-old man, who was the rider of the electric bike, remains in hospital with serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening. A 20-year-old man in Kent has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody. Senior Investigating Officer in the case, Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood, said: "This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life. Our thoughts are with the boy's loved ones, and we remain focused on securing justice for them. "We know that this incident will have caused concern in the local community, and we have a team of detectives working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded. We are also keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time of the incident."

Hospital apologises for shortcomings in care which led to death of woman and her unborn baby

Tipperary University Hospital has apologised to the family of a young mother for the shortcomings in care which led to her death and that of her unborn baby. Caroline Kavanagh was 22 weeks pregnant with her second child, a baby boy, when she first presented at the Clonmel hospital's emergency department with chest pain. Advertisement The family's counsel, Dr John O'Mahony SC, told the High Court the 37-year old woman was misdiagnosed and her heart attack symptoms were not identified or addressed and she was discharged home. Dr O'Mahony said it was a 'heartbreaking and extremely sad case' where the young mother five days later was found unresponsive in bed at her Kilmallock, Co Limerick, home and later pronounced dead. 'Her mother came to her home and found her daughter motionless in bed. Caroline had died and the baby she was carrying died with his mother,' Dr O'Mahony told the court. Outside the High Court, Caroline Kavanagh's family said it had been a ten year long battle for justice and even though they now had the long awaited apology from the HSE and hospital it will not bring back Caroline or the unborn baby boy who was to be known as TJ. Advertisement Dr O'Mahony, instructed by solicitor Ciaran O'Keeffe, said at the hospital there was a misdiagnosis and a mistaken belief that an elevated level of the protein Troponin in the blood was due to pregnancy when in reality it can point to cardiovascular issues. The letter of apology was read to the court as Caroline's 74-year-old mother, Margaret Kavanagh, of Cashel, Co Tipperary, settled a High Court action against the HSE over her daughter's death on February 11th, 2015. The letter from the interim hospital manager, Ailish Delaney, expressed 'profound sympathy and condolences' to Mrs Kavanagh on the loss of Caroline and her unborn child. It added: 'The management and staff of the hospital apologise sincerely for the shortcomings in the care which was provided to Caroline and which led to her tragic death. The hospital wishes to acknowledge the heartache and distress suffered by her family because of her premature passing and to express our sincere sympathy and regret.' Advertisement A breach of duty was admitted by the HSE in the case. At the time of her death, Ms Kavanagh's daughter, Megan, was only nine months old. Outside court, Margaret Kavanagh said it had taken the family 10 years to get justice for Caroline. 'While we acknowledge the apology from the HSE, as a family we believe that if the past mistakes that were made had had been corrected we would not be here today.' Advertisement She said even though the family now has the apology, it will not bring back Caroline or the unborn baby who was going to be called Thomas James or TJ. She said Caroline had been so looking forward to the birth of her second child. 'She was a great mother, daughter, sister and just a great person,' she said. Clutching a picture of her daughter she wears in a pendant around her neck, Mrs Kavanagh said while the family had now got justice, it had taken so long. Advertisement 'Why are there all these mistakes? We are in the 21st Century and we seem to be going backwards,' she said. Mrs Kavanagh, who was accompanied to court by Caroline's sister Claire, said she hoped that no family in the future will have to go through 'the pain and loss we have experienced in the last 10 years.' World Nine hurt as turbulence forces Ryanair plane into... Read More In the proceedings, it was claimed that the correct diagnosis of acute heart attack was not made and Caroline Kavanagh was not offered appropriate cardiac care to significantly improve her chances of survival when she attended the hospital on February 6th, 2015. She ultimately died of the complications of heart attack on February 11th, 2015. It was claimed substandard care had been provided to Ms Kavanagh and she did not have an echocardiogram. She had been started on cardioprotective medication on admission to hospital but these were stopped on discharge. Noting the settlement and the division of the statutory €35,000 mental distress payment, Mr Justice Paul Coffey extended his deepest sympathy to the Kavanagh family.
