Impressive City show title credentials with Juve demolition
ORLANDO, Florida, June 26 (Reuters) - Manchester City produced an impressive display to thrash Juventus 5-2 and underline their title credentials at the Club World Cup on Thursday.
The only team to advance into the last 16 with three victories, they showed intent and great finishing to top Group G, exposing Juve's defensive fragility in searing heat in Orlando.
The game also saw Rodri make his first start for City since September, playing 67 minutes.
By finishing top of their group, City will likely avoid a last-16 clash against Real Madrid, who will clinch Group H if they beat RB Salzburg later on Thursday.
Juve will probably have to face the 15-times European champions, who are expected to welcome back France forward Kylian Mbappe following a bout of illness.
Juventus coach Igor Tudor: "They were better. Better team. They controlled. It was difficult to play. Then we wanted to change a little bit to the team. It was not easy to make pressing this way. They were much better."
Juventus goalscorer Teun Koopmeiners: "They had a lot of touches on the ball. First half, we stayed a little too low. When we recovered the ball it was quite difficult to come out.
Second half, they were stronger than us and they scored a couple of goals. We need to learn from it."
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola: "I liked the way we did it. It has been a long time since we had a performance like this on and off the ball. The players were committed and we are happy to beat a top side.
"This is just one game, but I think the players felt again what it was like to be a good team. The belief always comes from your performances, not your past."
Guardiola on Rodri's return to the starting lineup: "We have missed him a lot. He knows exactly what he has to do with the ball, and his personality. I didn't expect him to play as many minutes. He will be ready for the next one."

Trent Alexander-Arnold has not been at Real Madrid for long, but the England international's new team-mates have already made an impression following his move from Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that while he knew his Real Madrid team-mates were going to be world-class, he didn't expect them to be so friendly. The England international moved to Los Blancos after the La Liga giants agreed to pay Liverpool £10million to sign him a month ahead of schedule. He was initially going to move to the Spanish capital as a free agent, but Real's desire to include Alexander-Arnold in their Club World Cup squad prompted them to pay a fee to sign him earlier. In their final group match in the USA, Xabi Alonso deployed the right-back for the full 90 minutes as they beat RB Salzburg 3-0. It was the latest sign that the defender is further settling into life at the 15-time European champions. Even Alexander-Arnold, who knew the quality they'd possess having faced them five times for his boyhood club, is surprised by the way his new team-mates have taken to him. Speaking to reporters after Real overcame the Austrian side, Alexander-Arnold said: "Every player is impressing me. From when I played against Real Madrid, [I knew] all the players are world class. "But just the way the lads are; when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect. But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing. "It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform. The settlement period now is done. "It's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.' Alexander-Arnold won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup (in its previous format) and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool. Throughout his time at Anfield, he contributed 67 assists, more than any other defender in Premier League history. When he arrived at his new club, he endeared himself to his colleagues and supporters by speaking in Spanish during his unveiling. While that has gone some way to helping him make a good impression, Alexander-Arnold admits he is still struggling to get to grips with the language. He added: "Of course speaking and being a part of the conversation is harder. You work hard to try and understand what people are saying and be a part of it. "But the manager speaks to me a lot individually to make sure I understand everything that gets said. The meetings are in Spanish so he goes out his way and the staff go out the way to make sure I understand the game plan. So there's differences but it's just football.' Real progressed into the last 16 of the competition as group winners. They started the campaign with a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, before overcoming Mexican team Pachuca and then Salzburg. They face Juventus, who were demolished 5-2 by Manchester City in their final group match, in the next round on July 1.

The Portugal international, 40, has extended his stay in the Saudi Pro League after months of speculation over his future. Announcing his new deal, Ronaldo posted to social meda. 'A new chapter begins,' he wrote, 'Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together.' And despite turning 40 earlier this year, the former Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United superstar has earned a payrise. The veteran even earned a mischievous comment from David De Gea, who said: 'And playing for free,' with a laughing face and the eyes emoji. The Spaniard had good reason to poke fun given the substantial nature of Ronaldo's new package at Al-Nassr. On top of a basic £488,000-a-day pay, Ronaldo becomes a 'dream ambassador' to earn greater perks, per reports. In addition to his £178m salary, the forward is taking home a £24.5m signing bonus that will increase to £38m should he enter the second year of his deal. Bonuses are also available if he achieves the golden boot and wins the league title, worth £4m and £8m respectively. The Portuguese star has no desire to move into coaching if he can afford to make such purchases. 'It doesn't make a lot of sense to be director of a club. If I can be a club owner, why would I be a manager, sporting director or CEO?,' he told Portuguese television station Canal 11 earlier this year. 'That is a dream of mine and I am sure I'll be a club owner. And I'll tell you more. I hope to have not just one club, but several clubs.' Ronaldo revealed earlier in June that he'd received many approaches but he made the decision not to complete a transfer for the Club World Cup. "There have been a lot of contacts, I see things that make sense, others that don't, as the other guy says, you can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term," he said. "It's a decision that has practically been made on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had a lot of invitations."
