MPs across party lines in parliamentary panel support forward-looking policy for Bangladesh
At a special interaction between four leading experts and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, MPs cutting across party lines displayed a desire to 'move ahead' with India's relation with Bangladesh, it has been learnt.
The Hindu had earlier reported that the interaction between the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor-led parliamentary committee and four experts was scheduled for Friday (June 27, 2025) afternoon, where the MPs were expected to be briefed on the latest developments in Dhaka and what India can do to recover the lost ground.
'All Members of Parliament displayed pathos and understanding of the issues between India and Bangladesh and there was a real desire among the MPs to mend the bilateral ties and take things forward,' said a source on condition of anonymity about the interaction between the four experts — former National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon, former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das, Lieutenant-General Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd) and Dean of School of International Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University Amitabh Mattoo.

The Hindu has learnt that the interaction went on for two and a half hours, as the MPs wanted to hear all the suggestions for repairing the ties that nosedived after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in a public agitation in August 2024. 'It was a general understanding that Bangladesh is connected through common culture and language and that it should not be viewed as a hostile neighbour like Pakistan,' said a source giving a hint about the discussion that took place in the meeting.
The MPs also opined that India should carry out a soft launch of cultural diplomacy involving West Bengal to soften some of the harsh exchanges between the two sides. Bangladesh has recently made a move in that direction with a meeting between its High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata last Monday (June 23, 2025).
'West Bengal and Bangladesh are connected through a common language and culture, the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore and Nazrul Islam and this vital link should be utilised for para-diplomacy between New Delhi and Dhaka through public events and interactions,' said a source privy to the discussion held by the Standing Committee.
The MPs also raised questions about the China factor in Bangladesh, illegal immigration from Bangladesh to India, and the trilateral meeting between the foreign office officials of Bangladesh, Pakistan and China that was held in Kunming on June 19, 2025.

CM to throw open PJR flyover today; traffic woes set to ease
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will inaugurate Shilpa layout stage-II flyover named after the senior Congress leader late P Janardhan Reddy (PJR), connecting Outer Ring Road (ORR) and Kondapur on Saturday. The flyover was built under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) at a cost of Rs 182.72 crore. It is 1.2 km long and 24 meters wide with six lanes. Its specialty is that it is a third-level structure built on two existing flyovers. Below is the Gachibowli Junction flyover, above it is the Shilpa layout phase one flyover and now the phase two flyover, is being built on top of it. The traffic woes of commuters will be solved. Once the flyover is opened to the public, the traffic issues for entering the ORR from Kondapur will be alleviated, benefiting those heading to the IT corridor as well. The congestion at the Gachibowli junction will significantly reduce, resulting in considerable time saving for motorists. Also, motorists can reach Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad directly from Kondapur via Gachibowli without any traffic jams. On Friday, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, Serilingampally MLA Arekapudi Gandhi, and senior engineers conducted a detailed inspection of the flyover site and the adjoining public meeting venue. The commissioner stated that the construction of this flyover will effectively resolve traffic issues for those traveling to the Financial District, Madhapur, and Shamshabad. According to officials, the vehicular traffic would get relief at Gachibowli Junction by creating free movement of traffic from ORR towards Kondapur and vice-versa. It will also provide better connectivity between Hi-tech City and Financial district. As SRDP is laying a big foundation for infrastructure development in Hyderabad, the 23rd flyover will be made available through the project. Out of the total 42 works undertaken through SRDP, 37 works have been completed with this flyover, officials added. Moreover, the GHMC informed the railway officials to finalize the railway segment of the Falaknuma and Shastripuram ROBs projects within the next 2-3 months. Upon the completion of these two ROBs, 39 SRDP projects will also be finished. This will allow motorists to navigate the area without any traffic interruptions.

Neither ran a parallel campaign nor indulged in factionalism: Ashu after AICC accepts his resignation
A day after the Congress leadership accepted his resignation as the working president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), Bharat Bhushan Ashu said he neither ran a parallel campaign nor indulged in factionalism. He, however, admitted 'a breakdown in coordination'. 'I take my share of responsibility for failing to bridge the divide.' In a statement, Ashu said, 'My resignation was an act of taking moral responsibility for the defeat, and not any admission of guilt. I will continue to serve the Congress, but my fight for truth will continue.' The recent rumblings in the Punjab Congress have occurred after its candidate, Ashu, lost the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll to the ruling AAP by over 10,000 votes. Throughout the campaign, the rift between Ashu and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring was visible to all. Ashu-led faction, including former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, MLAs Pargat Singh and Raja Gurjeet Singh, extensively campaigned for him but 'excluded' Warring, leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and other supporters. While Warring maintained that Ashu never 'invited' or asked him to campaign, Ashu said, 'I never stopped anyone from campaigning.' Ashu also inducted two local leaders from other parties — Karan Warring and Kamaljit Karwal — into the Congress allegedly against Warring's wishes. I have always believed that if a resignation can help the Congress reflect, reset and reorganise, it should never be withheld. My resignation — now accepted by the high command — is an act of responsibility, not an admission of guilt. The Ludhiana West by-election result was disappointing. But reducing it to the actions of a few individuals is not only politically inaccurate, it is also internally damaging.' Claiming that he never indulged in any indiscipline, Ashu wrote, 'I neither ran a parallel campaign nor indulged in factionalism. Those who worked closely with me know the sincerity of my effort. Yes, there was a breakdown in coordination — and I accept my share of the responsibility for not being able to bridge that divide, despite trying.' Raising several questions on some of his party colleagues, he wrote further, 'This moment must not become one of blame, it must become one of course correction. We must ask: Why did the voter disengage? Why were proxies used to unsettle the campaign? Why did some treat this election as a platform to settle personal scores rather than serve the party?' Ashu, who spent over a year in jail after being arrested in an alleged corruption case after AAP came to power, wrote that even during his toughest legal battles, he 'stood alone but never against the party'. 'I have served the Congress with loyalty and conviction for over two decades — never seeking comfort, only duty. Even during the most difficult times, when I faced personal and legal battles, I stood firm, alone if needed, but never against the party. I paid the price for standing by the Congress when others benefited, and I did it with my head held high. And even now, I remain where I've always been: on the ground, with the people,' he wrote. The rift between Ashu and Warring deepened during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when the party chose Warring to contest the Ludhiana seat, sidelining Ashu, who had recently been released on bail from an alleged corruption case, which was later quashed by the High Court. Warring went on to win the election. 'Punjab needs a Congress that is united in spirit, clear in direction, and strong in purpose. I sincerely hope the coming days bring reflection, not retribution, and that justice within the party is guided by values, not convenience. The fight for truth, for workers, and Punjab continues — and I will remain part of it,' Ashu added.
