Tenants at Moses Mabhida Stadium express optimism over R284 million refurbishments

It is business as usual, stated some tenants at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium (MMS), while major refurbishments are underway at the stadium.
The refurbishment of MMS is expected to be completed in another 30 months, costing an estimated R284 million.
Maia Magnussen, Segway Moses Mabhida manager, said she was happy about the stadium refurbishment and tourism attractions for both local and international visitors.
'I feel good about it. We have a positive feeling about everything that is happening around the stadium,' she said.
Also anticipating the changes was Jenesh Vidiasagar, Cuba Lounge group manager. He was looking forward to the proposed Sky Car attraction and a planned zipline connecting the stadium to People's Park. Vidiasagar hoped the refurbishment could be completed expeditiously. Both Cuba Lounge and Segway have been tenants at the stadium for over a decade.

'The hype around the refurbishment will bring in foot traffic to the precinct. It is certainly going to bring the stadium attractions back to life. Being an event venue, we host some star attractions, and having tourism features at the stadium is a bonus. The spin-off from these attractions would be beneficial to both business and tourism," he said.
Dumisani Thuladu, manager of Fresh Food with Thuladu, said that upon completion of the stadium refurbishment, it would add value to the retail outlets.
'The renovations have been beneficial to my business because the contractors and their employees are purchasing meals from us. So we have seen a slight spin-off from it,' he said.
The refurbishment of the MMS started on March 28, 2024, and is due to end on September 28, 2025. On May 31, 2025, the city aimed to extend the contract for 30 months due to the identified structural complications and risks.
The request for the extension of the contract to conduct emergency remedial work on the concrete and roof structure for MMS was noted at the eThekwini Community Services Committee (CSC) on July 17, subject to approval from the eThekwini council.
The municipality stated that some projects were delayed as priority was provided to foundation packages that are the backbone, while the remaining packages envisaged for completion in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 financial years.
While the renovations are underway, the tenants have not been affected in any way.
The renovation will also see the introduction of the following new features to ensure the stadium remains a premier tourist destination:

Major refurbishment set to last 30 months on the cards for Moses Mabhida Stadium
The Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban is set for a comprehensive refurbishment costing R284 million, with an expected completion date in 2027. The request for the extension of the contract to conduct emergency remedial work on the concrete and roof structure for MMS was noted at the Community Services Committee (CSC) on July 17. The CSC is a sub-committee of the city's executive committee. The refurbishment of the MMS started on March 28, 2024, and was due to end on September 28, 2025. However, the municipality stated that some projects were delayed as priority was provided to foundation packages that were the backbone, while the remaining packages envisaged for completion in 2025/2026 and 2026/ 2027 financial years. On May 31, 2025, the city aimed to extend the contract for 30 months due to the identified structural complications and risks. According to the CSC report, the extension of the current scope to complete the original work packages, but focusing on lists that were subject to further testing and were dependent on completion of the foundation packages, are: PROPOSED BUDGETS Civil: MMS structural steel painting - R19 million Electrical: sky car upgrade - R25 million Civil: infrastructure upgrade, expansion joints - R35 million Civil: infrastructure upgrade cables and canvas roof system - R135 million Lighting: upgrade - floodlight to LED - R55 million Civil: replacement of arch cladding MMS - R2 million Upgrade of audio visual system - R6 million Big swing upgrade, zipline, and adventure walk - R4 million Viewing platform - R2 million In a statement earlier this month, the municipality indicated that the refurbishment project at the MMS is progressing well. The upgrades to the stadium, which has been in operation for 15 years, have been strategically phased to minimise disruptions to scheduled activities and public access. The committee acknowledged the importance of completing the remaining work within the revised timeline and emphasised the need for close monitoring to ensure that the project meets both quality and compliance standards. The renovation will also see the introduction of the following new features to ensure the stadium remains a premier tourist destination: New Viewing Platform with 60% increase in floor area featuring a cantilevered glass floor for an 'Air Walk' experience. New Sky Car with increased travel time, which will be accessible to people with disabilities. New Big Swing with improved access to the launch platform. New Zip Line, which ends at the People's Park. Compression Ring Walk, which provides panoramic views with a sea-facing bungee jump option. The municipality stated that the refurbishment not only secured MMS as a premier venue for sports, concerts, and cultural events but also contributed to local job creation, skills development, and small business support through the procurement of services from local contractors. Despite the renovations, the stadium has successfully hosted several high-profile events, including the 2025 Nedbank Cup Final and the Toyota Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko on July 26.

No grants will be cancelled without verification and due process, says Social Development Minister Tolashe
As the Department modernises SASSA and reviews grant eligibility, Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe stresses no grant will be stopped without due process, urging beneficiaries to cooperate with the verification process. Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe stated that no social grants will be cancelled without proper verification and due process. Delivering the department's Budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, Tolashe assured Parliament that the Department remains committed to ensuring grants reach only eligible recipients. She noted that recent efforts to review beneficiaries are not about unfairly cutting people off, but about ensuring that only those eligible receive grants. 'We have not stopped or suspended any grant without due process. I wish to appeal to all beneficiaries who have received correspondence to visit SASSA offices and undergo a review process,' she said. Tolashe emphasised that the grant system is a vital social safety net, supporting over 27 million beneficiaries, including 13 million children and more than 4 million older persons. Of the department's R294 billion budget allocation, R284 billion will go directly to monthly social assistance, while SASSA receives R24.7 billion for grant administration over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework period.
