These Pocket Watches Come With Their Own Bags
Now, its new Escales Autour du Monde collection features two automaton pocket watches with landscape scenes on their dials. One displays an Amazon forest; the other shows Pont Neuf, the bridge over the Seine that is adjacent to Louis Vuitton's headquarters in Paris.
And both watches were designed to sit prominently on the exterior of a leather bag, a reproduction of a motoring bag Louis Vuitton created in the early 1900s in response to the sudden popularity of automobile travel.
The house said the bag, which looks much like a doctor's bag, was rediscovered during a search of the archives and would be created in exclusive versions for the watches' buyers. Matthieu Hegi, the artistic director of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the brand's high watchmaking division, added that buyers would also have the choice of two other bags: one that resembles Louis Vuitton's popular trunk-inspired Malle bag or a more rounded design.
The idea was to offer options to the client, said Mr. Hegi, who added that the original bag was his favorite. 'It's very unique,' he said. 'It tells a story of the past coming to the future.'
He likened the bag to the stands traditionally used to display pocket watches. 'We realized we don't need a stand — we have it,' he said of the bag.
The 50-millimeter white gold watches feature complications including a tourbillon and a minute repeater, which allows the time to be sounded by chimes. Each watch dial is ringed with a bezel of 60 baguette-cut gemstones, with the Escale en Amazonie in a green palette and the Escale au Pont-Neuf in a blue one.
To match the colors, the buyers' choice of bags and custom-made miniature storage trunks, an alternative to traditional watch boxes, will be covered in emerald green or saffron leather, colors that the house said would not be used on any other Louis Vuitton leather goods. Handcrafted gold watch chains will also be included.
The watches themselves feature 3-D-like scenes with seven automations and were created with métiers d'art techniques such as engraving and enameling.
The Escale en Amazonie depicts a wooden boat that moves from right to left. It is carrying several Louis Vuitton trunks that open and close, the entire scene observed by a monkey, a pair of parrots and a snake.
The Pont Neuf design also features a boat, a cargo barge floating on the Seine, with the historic bridge and Parisian cityscape in the background.
Mr. Hegi said he personally is a fan of pocket watches. 'I consider it the most elegant way to wear a watch,' he said. 'I like the idea of having the watch somewhere else than the wrist — either in your pocket or displayed on a bag, as we did.'

Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signs striker Geubbels from St. Gallen
PARIS (AP) — Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signed striker Willem Geubbels from Swiss team St. Gallen on a five-year contract on Sunday. Paris FC announced the signing with a video posted on X. No transfer fee was given but French sports daily L'Équipe said Geubbels cost 9 million euros ($10.5 million) with a further 2.5 million euros in eventual bonuses. The 24-year-old Geubbels came through Lyon's famed youth academy but hardly played for the club before joining Monaco. He scored one league goal there and two for Nantes before joining St. Gallen in 2023, where he scored 14 league goals last season. Paris FC has large funds at its disposal since its takeover by France's richest family, the Arnaults of luxury empire LVMH. The energy drink giant Red Bull acquired a minority stake. For the first time in 35 years two Paris-based soccer clubs are in Ligue 1. Furthermore, Paris FC has changed its home stadium since being promoted and will play at Stade Jean-Bouin, which is literally across the street from defending champion Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium. ___

Why The US Military Still Flies The Boeing 707
The role of Boeing's 707 in modern commercial aviation simply cannot be overstated. It was the first successful jet airliner outside of the Soviet Union, and by 1955, more Americans were traveling by plane than by train for the first time ever. A similar milestone was checked in 1957, when more passengers crossed the Atlantic Ocean to and from Europe on jets than by ship, even fast ships like the SS United States. The next year, the Pan Am completed its groundbreaking transatlantic flight from New York to Paris with a B707. In the end, the Boeing 707 may have been a little too successful, because its single-aisle design couldn't accommodate the massive number of passengers who suddenly flocked to air travel. Not to mention that its four engines were both fuel-thirsty and noisy compared to modern advancements at the time. The last U.S.-based airline to fly the Boeing 707 was Trans World Airline in 1983, while Iran's Saha Airlines took the last civil 707 flight anywhere on the globe in 2013. According to a Facebook post from the aviation news site Flight Drama, a total of 79 Boeing 707 jets are still flying today, albeit all for government or military organizations, not scheduled passenger flights. Presumably, that doesn't account for the KC-135 tanker variant, which still numbers in the hundreds. These aircraft, while old, are prized for their durable construction, versatility, and long cruising range. To that end, many have been updated with new engines and electronics to keep them viable. Read more: These Are The Best Engines Of All Time, According To You Budget Is Also A Factor One of the U.S. military's oldest aircraft, excepting maybe the B-52 bomber, is the aforementioned KC-135. Nicknamed the Stratotanker, this plane was developed simultaneously with the 707 platform. Indeed, the first KC-135 jets took to the skies in 1956, a year after Chevy's small-block V8 engine made its splash debut. Instead of passengers or cargo, the KC-135 carries more than 31,000 gallons of jet fuel, which it dispenses to other aircraft like fighter jets and bombers mid-air at speeds up to 125 mph. A newer Boeing product, the KC-46 Pegasus, was slated to replace the aging KC-135 en masse, but it proved problematic on multiple levels, giving the KC-135 a longer lease on life. Another Boeing 707 variant that's still in service with the U.S. military is the E-3 Sentry. As of 2022, the U.S. Air Force had a fleet of 31 E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) jets, the most recent of which was delivered in 1984. The E-3 Sentry is pretty much a flying radar station, with the ability to track ships, other planes, and missiles. In the near future, that role will fall largely to space satellites instead of airplanes. But in the meantime, the Air Force is facing budget cuts that prevent wholesale replacement of the aging E-3 Sentry with the B737-based E-7 Wedgetail as an interim measure. In a recent hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska stated, "The E-3 fleet [is] barely operational now, and ... you've got a situation where you're not going to be able to use more duct tape to hold things together," as reported by TWZ. Sunderland close to spending record with Mukiele deal
Sunderland have signed France defender Nordi Mukiele from Paris St-Germain in a deal worth £12m, taking their summer spending to around £141.5m. The 27-year-old's arrival on a four-year contract comes a day after they beat West Ham 3-0 on their return to the top flight. Mukiele, who spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, is the 12th player to sign for the Black Cats this summer. He will cost an initial 11m euros (£9.5), with a further 3m euros (£2.5m) in add-ons. "It's a new challenge and I'm happy to be here," said Mukiele. "I saw the atmosphere of the stadium, and this is something I really like. "The fans are very important in football, and especially in Sunderland. I came here to fight for them." With 21 signings in the summer of 2022 at a cost of around £142m, Nottingham Forest hold the record for the most transfers by a promoted Premier League club in one window. Sunderland's new arrivals also include former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, winger Simon Adingra from Brighton, and club-record signing Habib Diarra, who cost around £30m from Strasbourg. That outlay was balanced by high-profile sales, such as Jobe Bellingham joining Borussia Dortmund and Tom Watson moving to Brighton for a combined total in the region of £37m. Burnley have brought in 13 new faces at a cost of approximately £100m, while Leeds United have invested £73.5m on their eight signings so far. Mukiele joined PSG in 2022, where he won five trophies, and played alongside new Sunderland captain Xhaka last season at Leverkusen, where he made 24 appearances. He started his career at Stade Lavallois before spells at Montpellier and RB Leipzig, and has played 35 Champions League games. Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said Mukiele "possesses rare athletic qualities that are perfectly suited to our team in the Premier League" and has "tactical versatility" as he is able to play at centre-back and right-back.
