Jaden Smith Touts New Louis Vuitton Mini Trunk for LVMH Prize Cocktail Party at Paris Fashion Week

Jaden Smith touted one of Louis Vuitton's new mini trunks at an LVMH Prize cocktail party in Paris on Wednesday. The annual grant supports up-and-coming designers in the fashion industry. At the event, Smith sported a slate gray shirt jacket with a flared hemline and button closures. Sheer pleated pants and leather boots completed his look, along with a pair of cat-eye frames. The new Petite Malle — a miniature version of Vuitton's signature trunks — features a trompe-l'oeil design made to look like three trunks in one. Ghesquière originally debuted the design as part of his fall 2014 collection for Vuitton. The version Smith carries is a direct reference to the first Petite Malle, a design etched with small 'Xs.' Founded in 1854, Louis Vuitton built its business on trunks. It wasn't until the 1910s that the label began designing handbags. Designer Louis Vuitton reinvented trunks with his flat-topped design. Introduced in 1858, the rectangular canvas chests were stackable, unlike their rounded predecessors. He also created the 'unpickable' tumbler lock. Previously, many locks were able to be cracked by burglars, but Vuitton and his son, Georges, created a single lock system with two spring buckles. The design is still used in Louis Vuitton trunks today. Last month, LVMH revealed 20 semifinalists for its annual grant program. 'We are seeing several compelling trends among emerging designers from all over the world, from a renewed interest in tailoring, to handcrafted embellishments and bold occasion dressing,' Delphine Arnault, a board member of the luxury conglomerate, said at the time. Twenty designers are competing for a grand prize of 400,000 euros and mentorship by LVMH in areas including sustainable development, communication, copyright and corporate legal aspects, marketing, manufacturing and the financial management of a brand.
