Microsoft shakes up leadership: LinkedIn CEO to oversee Office, Copilot

Microsoft is making significant changes to its leadership team, with LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky taking on additional oversight of the company's core Office products, including Word and Excel, as well as its flagship AI tool, Copilot.
According to an internal memo from CEO Satya Nadella shared with employees, the reshuffle aims to streamline leadership responsibilities and enhance focus on Microsoft's key offerings, news agency Reuters reported.
Despite his new responsibilities, Roslansky will continue to serve as CEO of LinkedIn. Under the updated structure, he will now report directly to Rajesh Jha, who leads Microsoft's Windows unit and is also responsible for overseeing Teams and other core services.
Other leadership changes
This marks the second leadership reshuffle at Microsoft in just three months. Back in March, Nadella announced a significant change by appointing a new Chief People Officer (CPO) following Kathleen Hogan's transition. Hogan, who had served as CPO since 2014, has since moved into a new role as Executive Vice-President of the Office of Strategy and Transformation, Business Insider reported.
Microsoft's free cybersecurity aid for Europe
Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it is offering a free cybersecurity programme to European governments to help bolster their defences against cyber threats, including those involving artificial intelligence, Reuters reported.
The initiative comes amid a notable increase in cyberattacks across Europe, many of which have been linked to state-backed actors from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. The programme is designed to enhance intelligence-sharing on AI-related threats and support efforts to prevent and disrupt attacks.
"If we can bring more to Europe of what we have developed in the United States, that will strengthen cybersecurity protection for more European institutions," Microsoft President Brad Smith told Reuters in an interview.
Smith also hinted at additional initiatives planned for later in the month, saying: "You're going to see other things we are doing later in the month."
Attackers are increasingly using generative AI to expand the scale and impact of their operations, from targeting critical infrastructure to disseminating disinformation. However, Smith emphasised that AI also offers significant defensive capabilities. "We don't feel that we have seen AI that has evaded our ability to detect the use of AI or the threats more broadly," Smith said.
Smith stressed the importance of ensuring that defensive AI progresses faster than offensive uses of the technology. "Our goal needs to be to keep AI advancing as a defensive tool faster than it advances as an offensive weapon," he said.

Suzuki Halts Swift Production Amid China's Rare Earth Export Curbs: Report

Last Updated: Suzuki Motor has halted production of its Swift and the consequences are particularly stark for India, where Swift has been one of the best-selling cars for years In a major jolt to the global automobile industry, Suzuki Motor has temporarily halted production of its widely popular Swift hatchback, a flagship model in India, Japan, and several other global markets. The reason? A tightening grip from China on the supply of critical rare earth elements, which has begun disrupting key industrial sectors across the world. This marks the first time a Japanese automaker has been forced to suspend vehicle production as a direct consequence of China's rare earth export restrictions, industry sources told Reuters. Production of all Swift subcompact variants, except the Swift Sport, has been on hold since May 26. While Suzuki had initially hoped to resume assembly by June 6, supply issues persisted, delaying production restart plans. The company has now announced a tentative partial resumption from June 13, with full-scale operations expected to restart after June 16. Although Suzuki has officially cited 'component shortages" without elaborating, two insiders familiar with the matter confirmed to Reuters that the root cause lies in China's decision to curb exports of rare earths and related magnets that are critical materials used in electric motors, batteries, and automotive components. Rare earth materials such as neodymium and dysprosium are essential in manufacturing magnets for electric motors and various car components. China dominates the global supply, accounting for more than 70% of rare earth production. When China announced in April that it would suspend exports of several categories of rare earths and associated magnets, alarm bells rang across sectors, from automobiles to aerospace and semiconductors to military hardware. This rare earth chokehold is not just a threat on paper. Several European auto parts plants have already paused operations. Mercedes-Benz is reportedly exploring strategies to shield itself from the looming shortfall. The disruption is also expected to impact the electric vehicle (EV) market, as lithium-ion battery production is heavily dependent on these elements. The ripple effect may slow down EV rollouts and affect pricing globally, including in India, where the EV market is still emerging and vulnerable to global supply tremors. The consequences are particularly stark for India, where the Swift has been one of the best-selling compact cars for over a decade. Suzuki's decision could cause supply gaps in India's market as well, especially if disruptions continue longer than expected. Meanwhile, auto manufacturers in India are reportedly scouting for alternatives to lithium-ion batteries and rare earth-dependent components. Japan, already reeling under the pressure, is now reportedly planning to propose stronger cooperation with the United States on building a secure rare earth supply chain. According to Nikkei Business Daily, these proposals are expected to feature prominently in upcoming trade talks between the two allies. While Suzuki's temporary suspension may appear limited in scope, analysts say it underscores a far more worrying trend; China's dominance over rare earth supplies is becoming a geopolitical lever capable of stalling industries across continents.

Stock market weekly wrap: Sensex, Nifty 50 end higher for third week. What to expect from Indian stock market next week?

Indian stock market: Indian indices - Sensex and Nifty 50 - ended the week on a higher note for third week straight on RBI's policy announcement, which took the market by surprise. After remaining range-bound for most of the week, benchmark indices surged sharply on Friday and settled near the week's high, with the Nifty closing at 25,003 and the Sensex at 82,118.99. The sectoral performance was generally favorable, with rate-sensitive sectors experiencing robust buying activity. The rally was led by realty, automobile, and banking stocks, driven by optimistic expectations for credit growth and consumer confidence. Financials and NBFCs also saw gains, supported by the anticipation that lower interest rates will improve borrowing conditions. On the other hand, IT stocks lagged behind due to ongoing global uncertainties, especially in the U.S. and European markets. Moving ahead, market participants will concentrate on important macroeconomic data for additional insights. Key high-frequency indicators like CPI inflation will be carefully observed to assess demand patterns and anticipate the central bank's future actions. Furthermore, the status of the monsoon and sowing activities will be tracked because of their impact on rural consumption. Globally, progress in trade talks and fluctuations in U.S. bond yields will remain significant factors shaping investor sentiment. According to Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, Nifty has once again approached the upper band of its prevailing consolidation range of 24,500–25,100. ' A decisive breakout above 25,200 would mark the beginning of a fresh uptrend, with potential to gradually move toward the 25,600–25,800 zone. On the downside, the 24,400–24,600 range is expected to act as a strong support zone during any corrective phase,' Mishra said. Meanwhile, speaking on Bank Nifty outlook, Mishra said, ' The banking index has finally broken above the key 56,000 mark after trading in a tight range for over a month. We now expect it to move toward the 58,000 level, making this segment crucial for broader market direction. In case of a dip, the 55,350–56,000 range is likely to provide strong support.' Market analysts maintain a positive outlook on the markets fueled by RBI's rate cut. 'With the RBI's rate cut and dovish commentary acting as strong tailwinds, we maintain our positive outlook on the markets and suggest continuing with a 'buy on dips' strategy unless the Nifty decisively breaks below 24,600. However, investors should remain selective and focus on fundamentally strong stocks in sectors such as banking, auto, and real estate, which are poised to benefit from lower interest rates. Other sectors may contribute on a rotational basis,' Mishra said. Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
