Now it's The Royle Family's turn for BBC trigger warning: Sitcom contains 'discriminatory language'

Daily Mail05-07-2025
It left fans in stitches across three critically acclaimed seasons with its slice of Manchester life, spawning some classic catchphrases.
But the fun is over for The Royle Family after the iconic sitcom became the latest show to be slapped with a BBC trigger warning.
Seven episodes have been flagged by regulators thanks to 'discriminatory language some viewers may find offensive'.
The notices, which can be seen on iPlayer, do not explain which scenes contribute towards the warnings, The Sun reports.
No episodes from series one have received the content alert but episodes one, three and six from series two, which aired in 1999, and episode one from series three, which went out in 2000, have been deemed offensive.
The latter perhaps has something to do with Anthony Royle, played by Ralf Little, describing a friend as a 'batty boy'.
Two of the five Christmas specials, from 2008 and 2009, have also been adorned with the warning.
It's not the first time the corporation has flagged the show to viewers for being potentially problematic.
In 2021, a scene where TV-obsessed protagonist Jim, played by Ricky Tomlinson, calls celebrity interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen a 'nancy boy' was highlighted.
At its peak, 12 million people watched each episode of The Royle Family with lead character Jim a fan favourite, partly for his famous catchphrase, 'my a*se'.
The show also starred Sue Johnston as his wife Barbara and Caroline Ahern as their daughter Denise Best, as well as Craig Cash, Little and Liz Smith.
The last of the series' 25 episodes was broadcast on Christmas Day 2012.
The BBC has been approached for comment.
It comes just days after the BBC also hit The Fast Show with a disclaimer.
Originally airing in the 90s, the classic stars Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson with quick-fire sketches that depicted British society at the time.
However, its infamous Suit You, Sir scenes have been hit with a 'woke' warning by BBC bosses.
The Sun revealed two episodes contain the warning, which advises viewers of 'discriminatory language' before they can play the show.
One episode from series three, that aired in December 1997, carries a scene where the tailors ask a customer if they would like to have sex with a 'she-male'.
In reply, the customer says: 'Come on you tr**nies!'
Meanwhile, an episode from the second series that originally broadcast in 1996, sees two men make advances on women.
When they're swiftly rejected, the pair declare the women are 'lesbians'.
The Fast Show aired for four series on the BBC before it was axed by bosses in 1997 after 28 episodes, which are all now available on iPlayer.
The BBC also recently hit Ricky Gervais's comedy series The Office with a similar warning.
The hit mockumentary sitcom created by comedian Gervais, 64, as well as Stephen Merchant, famously stars him as paper company boss David Brent.
Both series of the noughties programme were already labelled with a G symbol on BBC iPlayer, which flags parental guidance for younger viewers.
But nearly half of the BBC series' 14 episodes, following life at Wernham Hogg's Slough office, now also carry the additional content notice.
In series one, which aired in 2001, the first and last episodes - Downsize and Judgement - bear the alert.
Meanwhile, a whopping half of the second series, released in 2002, has been hit with trigger warnings - episodes one, three and five, named Merger, Party and Charity.
At the start of the year it was revealed how Only Fools and Horses was hit with various disclaimers around 'racial language', words that 'may offend' and 'dated attitudes and behaviours'.
Only two of seven series of the eighties hit show - which is available to watch on ITV and often reruns on digital channel U&Gold - did not have any episodes at all slapped with the warnings.

Alex Jones confirms return of her The One Show co-host after lengthy break

The One Show host Alex Jones confirmed the return of her co-host after a lengthy absence from the BBC programme. Alex Jones has disclosed that one of her previous co-presenters is making a comeback to The One Show next week. ‌ At the end of Friday's (August 1) programme, the Welsh host, who recently provided an update to her followers, i nformed BBC audiences that Ronan Keating was returning to the iconic green sofa following an extended absence. ‌ As the episode ended she announced to viewers: "That's all we've got time for tonight! a big thank you to our guests. ‌ "Now, Ronan Keating is back with me on Monday, with guest's Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Ade Edmondson and Helen George." The revelation follows the Boyzone singer's disclosure back in 2023 that he would be presenting fewer programmes owing to his musical obligations, reports Wales Online. In a statement released at the time, Ronan explained: "I'll be doing less shows this year due to my performing and recording schedule but I'm still very much part of the family." ‌ Meanwhile in the episode, presenters Alex and Clara Amfo admitted they felt anxious about one specific guest they would be interviewing. As Friday's programme began, BBC viewers witnessed Clara and Alex reveal who would be appearing later in the show. ‌ Initially they mentioned Vicky McClure would be performing live later in the programme with Jon McClure's band Reverend and the Makers. Nevertheless, it was actor Sam Claflin who left the pair feeling nervous about welcoming him onto the programme. ‌ Clara said: "We're equally excited by somebody else who knows a thing or two about rock'n'roll, actor Sam Claflin blew us away in Daisy Jones and The Six. "Honestly, myself and Al were obsessed with this show, we're a bit worried that he's going to be scared of us later, but we carry on!" Despite this, it appeared Sam was entirely comfortable whilst chatting to the duo, as they discussed his part in the Amazon Prime programme. ‌ Playing Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones and The Six, Clara didn't hesitate to enquire whether viewers might anticipate another series. The star responded: "I can't speak for everyone, I can speak for myself. I think we'd love to. It's just not in my hands! It's not my decision unfortunately. "I think getting six actors together with our schedules-obviously, if we were a band, our schedules would be aligned. "But, we're all actors, we all have families, we're all from different parts of the world. The desire is there, but it's out of my hands." The One Show is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Actress is a dead ringer for Rita Ora after makeover can you guess who it is?

An actress looked a dead ringer for Rita Ora after a recent makeover as she posed for a photoshoot on Thursday. Modelling her own line of clothing on the streets of Manchester, she wore a cream blazer with a daring plunge neckline. She teamed the piece with matching shorts and added a pair of stiletto heels to complete her outfit. Mirroring Rita, she accessorised with some tinted, oversized, square sunglasses. Known for her role in a popular soap, this actress has also starred on a number of reality TV shows and competitions. Can you guess who it is? It's Chelsee Healy! The Hollyoaks actress, who plays Goldie McQueen on the Channel 4 soap, has also starred on Waterloo Road. Earlier this year, she competed on Dancing On Ice but became the first celebrity to be eliminated from the programme after being voted off in a skate-off against Comedian Josh Jones. Just four days before she was eliminated from the show, Eddie Rainford, the father of her daughter pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug between November 2022 and September 2023. In June, Chelsee watched on at Manchester Crown Court as he was warned he's facing jail for his role in a 'wholesale' drug-dealing operation. She had attempted to keep his full identity hidden on social media, only referring to her now ex-partner - who is dad of her 15-month-old daughter Cookie - as Eddie. The actress even hinted at a troubling time away from the cameras during her exit from Dancing On Ice, remarking: 'There has been a lot going on with me that I have been struggling with.' A source told The Sun: 'What Chelsee was desperately coping with while on the show was that her partner, the father of her youngest daughter, was in court for drug-dealing and has been sent to prison on remand.' While a separate insider informed the publication that the soap star was no longer in a relationship with Eddie. In March last year, Chelsee dropped a huge hint that they had secretly got married. The Hollyoaks star made reference to having a 'husband' as she shared a snap of a meal that had been cooked for her. She shared the picture of the plate of food and wrote: 'Sticky chilli steak coconut rice home made by the husband.' The actress - who plays Goldie McQueen on the Channel 4 soap - made no further elaboration of her comment. Chelsee's ex-partner was pictured for the first time after her co-star shared a snap - after she had previously kept the identity of her man under wraps. However, her Hollyoaks co-star Richard Blackwood gave the game away as he shared a series of snaps from Chelsee's baby shower - with one of them including Chelsea cuddling up to Eddie. Weeks before she'd given birth, Chelsee shared a picture of herself with Eddie, but she was posed in front of him, shielding his identity. Chelsee has since happily shown Eddie's face on her social media, with a snap on her Instagram showing herself and Eddie in matching cream outfits while holding their baby daughter Cookie - whom they welcomed in December 2023. Speaking about her decision not to publicly disclose the baby's father in summer she told Closer Magazine: 'This is the most supportive relationship I've ever been in. 'My friends and family love him, and he's the first bloke I've introduced Coco to, which says a lot. 'I knew he was The One within three to four months. I've kissed a few frogs, but he's definitely marriage material.' She added: 'In some past relationships I've never felt safe, they felt toxic and a little bit abusive, but with him it's completely different. I just want someone who brings me peace and is drama-free and this feels right. He's six years younger but has a mature head on his shoulders.' Chelsee also has an older daughter Coco, seven, from her relationship with ex Jack Malloy.
