Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa says his side will need a shift in mindset if they are to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns, who have dominated the league for the past eight seasons.
Pirates appear best placed to have another strong campaign, having emerged as the side most likely to challenge Sundowns after addressing the loose ends — with new player additions set to strengthen the squad this season.
The Buccaneers are returning to the CAF Champions League, but with the league title also a major priority — having missed out for over a decade — consistency will be key in achieving their targets.
Mabasa, who has been crucial for the Soweto giants over the past three seasons, believes the team needs to adopt the right mentality to overcome what has become a well-oiled Sundowns machine.

'We know we are up against a points machine, it's very rare for them to slip up in the league. Mabasa said at the premier of his sides documentary series Giants.
'That is the sort of mentality that we also have to develop as a team, we saw what happened last season, we won the first seven games and then we lost against Stellenbosch FC, and then the gap started to open up at three points.'
The Sea Robbers started strongly last season but struggled to maintain the level of consistency needed to go toe-to-toe with the Brazilians. Mabasa added that they must shut down areas of weakness and be more consistent by learning from their past failures.
'We tried to play catch up as much as possible, but unfortunately it didn't happen even though we had the games in hand but this season it's all about trying to be consistent in terms of winning as many games as possible.
'It's normal to have a loss in a season because that is when you get to see the mistakes you're making and you're able to learn and correct them, hopefully it happens in a not so important game or it's mistakes we can recover from and not ones that will be detrimental to our season like the ones we made last season.'
The Buccaneers striker didn't get as much game time as he would have liked — especially after winning the golden boot the season prior — with strong competition from teammate Evidence Makgopa limiting his minutes on the field.

Despite limited appearances, the 28-year-old made an impact when called upon and enters the new season in high spirits, hoping for more regular involvement.
Mabasa is also closing in on club legend Benedict Vilakazi's all-time top scorer mark, as he currently stands on 46 goals — just six behind Vilakazi's tally of 52 — a milestone he hopes to reach early this season.
'I am looking to have a big season,' Mabasa continued. 'I think I am10 or 11 goals away and I want to achieve that record before the AFCON starts.
'It's possible, we have five games in August, six with the MTN8, so I don't see why not. I don't see pressure, it's about speaking things into existence and into life, and they will happen.'

Cardoso hails collective effort after Coach of the Season award

"Winning this award is obviously an individual recognition of a coach but I see it in a wider perspective," Cardoso said. Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has hailed the club's collective effort following his recognition as the PSL Coach of the Season. Cardoso won the award during the League's awards ceremony on Tuesday evening. He expressed a heartfelt gratitude to his players, technical team, club management, and family. ALSO READ: Khune shares his views on Kaizer Chiefs new signings The Portuguese coach replaced Manqoba Mngqithi at the helm last December and wasted no time in stamping his authority. In 21 Betway Premiership matches, Cardoso led the Brazilians to 18 wins, one draw, and just two defeats to secure the league title in emphatic fashion. His consistency throughout the campaign saw him collect three Coach of the Month awards, as Sundowns remained dominant on their march to domestic glory. Cardoso's remarkable turnaround at Chloorkop saw him edge out strong competition from former Orlando Pirates boss José Riveiro and Stellenbosch FC's Steve Barker for the prestigious accolade. 'Winning this award is obviously an individual recognition of a coach but I see it in a wider perspective,' Cardoso told the Sundowns media team. 'It reflects the work of a big group of people alongside the coaching staff and the players who basically allow any coach to be successful and fulfil the expectations of their careers.' Despite the personal honour, the Sundowns mentor reserved special praise to his players who overcame an unconvincing start to season to defend their title. They showed resilience in fending off an early title challenge from the Buccaneers who eventually finished second. 'Mostly, I dedicate this trophy to the players, but it also means that there is the staff of the club who also allow the Coach and the players to perform,' he concluded. 'I see this award belonging to a big group of people despite me being the face of it. It's also an honour which makes the club believe that they made a good choice on the coach. 'So I'm happy and I dedicate it to the management of the club. Last but not least, I dedicate it to my family because they supported me throughout the years and they believe in me a lot. Winning this trophy is also a moment that we're all together to celebrate me and my career.' PSL Awards 2025: A night of glory for Costa but were the right winners crowned?

Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns was the big winner at the PSL awards. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Lucas Ribeiro Costa was the standout star at the 2024/25 PSL Awards, walking away with an impressive four accolades, including the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season. The Mamelodi Sundowns forward's contribution, particularly during the first half of the campaign, was instrumental in securing the club's record-extending eighth consecutive league title. Costa's performances ensured that Sundowns kept fierce rivals Orlando Pirates at bay while asserting their dominance in the Betway Premiership. In addition to the top honour, he was also named Players' Player of the Season, Goal of the Season, and Premiership Top Goal Scorer after netting 16 goals in league action. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading While there was little debate over most of Costa's accolades, the Goal of the Season award raised some eyebrows. His composed finish against the Buccaneers — where defenders looked on rather than intervening — was undoubtedly elegant. However, Fawaaz Basadien's stunning long-range strike from inside his own half arguably deserved the nod. Goals of that nature are rare in the PSL and far more difficult to execute, which could have tipped the scale in his favour. The Coach of the Season award was another hotly contested category. On paper, Miguel Cardoso appeared the logical choice, having guided Sundowns to the title. Although he only took charge midway through the campaign — replacing Manqoba Mngqithi — the impact he made was undeniable. He inherited a finely tuned side and steered them through a gruelling campaign, effectively ending the Sea Robbers' title push in the final stretch. Standing in his way was Jose Riveiro, who had a strong case of his own. Despite falling 13 points short of the title, he kept the Buccaneers competitive across all fronts. His tactical acumen and consistency were evident throughout the campaign. Still, Cardoso's success in solidifying Sundowns' grip on the league and leading them to a commanding finish was enough to tilt the balance in his favour. Pirates and Sundowns shared the spotlight on the night. Sipho Chaine edged out Ronwen Williams and Magesi FC's Elvis Chipezeze to claim Goalkeeper of the Season. Williams might have mounted a stronger challenge had injury setbacks not disrupted his campaign. Another Pirates player, Nkosinathi Sibisi, rightfully took home Defender of the Season. His leadership and consistency stood out, especially as he partnered with a rotating cast of centre-backs throughout the campaign. His experience and adaptability were vital to the club's defensive stability and fully justified the recognition. However, the most debatable decision of the night came in the Midfielder of the Season category. Makhehlene Makhaula had an excellent campaign for the Buccaneers — especially in terms of breaking up play and winning possession. Yet Teboho Mokoena arguably had the edge. Mokoena not only posted superior statistical returns but also brought balance to Sundowns' midfield. His contributions at both ends of the pitch, including set-piece delivery and goal threat, made him a more complete presence. Makhaula's work ethic was undeniable, but his limited progressive play raises questions about how the final decision was reached.

Mamelodi Sundowns set to offload expensive midfield star

Mamelodi Sundowns have ramped up efforts to trim their bloated squad as preparations intensify ahead of the new Premiership season. With a string of departures already confirmed, a source now suggests the club is finalising decisions on players whose futures remain uncertain. Among those under scrutiny is Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel, who trained with the squad during pre-season. The source revealed that the 26-year-old may not feature in the Brazilians' plans for the campaign ahead. While Sundowns have already parted ways with the likes of Sipho Mbule, Rivaldo Coetzee, and Lebohang Maboe, Esquivel's situation presents a financial complication. 'He is believed to have been on the list of the players to be released but due to the financial logistics involved, then it is believed that it will cost the club a lot, and that's why they are working on loaning him out again,' a source explained. 'They are working on downsizing, and he is believed to be one of the players that was supposed to leave.' The midfielder's contract reportedly runs until June 2027, making a permanent release financially impractical. As a result, the club is actively pursuing loan options to reduce wage obligations without taking a direct financial hit. The most likely outcome appears to be a return to Esquivel's former side Talleres Cordoba, although multiple destinations remain on the table. 'That's the possibility right now. Yes, they are looking at other options but going back to Talleres Cordoba is a possibility because they already know him,' the source added. 'But the club is believed to be looking at different options to loan him out as part of the squad downsizing this season.' Sundowns' aggressive approach to cutting their squad signals a major tactical shift. That's likely aimed at increasing squad efficiency and freeing up space for new arrivals. Esquivel's looming exit underlines the financial chess game taking place behind the scenes. As the club balances competitiveness with sustainability. Will Matias Esquivel find a new home before the window closes. Or could Mamelodi Sundowns be stuck with an expensive benchwarmer?
