Shapiro remains steadfast on no state money for new arenas, champions Pa. sports scene at Pocono
Associated Press
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro reaffirmed the state would provide no funding for any new sports arenas — a possibility that looms with the Eagles' lease set to expire in 2032 — and said there were conversations about bringing NASCAR to Philadelphia as he championed the state's full sports slate next year during an appearance Sunday at Pocono Raceway.
Shapiro said he would continue talking with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and the Rooney family in Pittsburgh about what — if anything — the NFL teams need when it comes to the state of their stadiums.
Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium, the home of the Steelers, opened in 2001 while Lincoln Financial Field opened in 2003 in Philadelphia's shared sports complex. The Eagles do not own the Linc. The team will need to renew its lease or build a new stadium, and Lurie said during the lead-up to the Super Bowl that he was 'torn' over the idea of replacing the stadium or staying put in the home where they raised their only two Super Bowl championship banners.
If a new stadium is proposed, it won't come with state money — just as Shapiro said he would not provide when the 76ers considered building a new arena (ownership did not ask for the funds) last year.
(The 76ers decided to partner with Comcast Spectacor, their current landlord, to build a new arena in South Philadelphia.)
'I'm very worried about the overall budget,' Shapiro said Sunday at Pocono. 'I'm very worried about the overall economic situation given the federal cuts. You want to balance investing in tourism, investing in sports, investing in great arenas and facilities, with making sure that you're also investing those dollars in things that Pennsylvanians need most.'
Shapiro, who spoke ahead of the scheduled NASCAR Cup Series race at the track, declined to get into specifics about any stadium conversations with the state's NFL owners.
'I will tell you that we want to make sure the Steelers, we want to make sure the Eagles, and all of our pro teams have outstanding places to play,' he said. 'That are welcoming for fans. That generate revenue.
'We're going to continue to dialog with them about what they need and what's possible.'
Shapiro promoted the financial impact generated for the state each year because of the NASCAR weekend at Pocono. He praised Pocono Raceway officials for its third straight sellout crowd set for Sunday. The track sold out all frontstretch seating, premium seating, suites, infield camping and the grandstand camping area. It also is the fifth consecutive year that the entire infield camping inventory has been sold out.
Pocono President Ben May said the track sold around 50,000 grandstand tickets, around 2,000 suite seats and 3,300 camping spots.
NASCAR expressed at least a cursory interest in adding to its recent string of offbeat race locations — everywhere from Mexico City to a temporary track inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — and floated the idea of holding a race inside a Philadelphia stadium, Franklin Field. The site is traditionally home to the Penn Relays and college football.
'There's some conversations,' Shapiro said. 'First and foremost, we don't want to do anything that undermines Pocono. But as Ben (says), the more NASCAR the better. The more racing, the better. The more we can turn people on in communities that haven't been to Pocono yet, to get excited about racing, and then make that trip to Pocono next year, the better. I want to see more NASCAR, more racing. I also just want to see more sports in general.'
He'll get his wish next year.
Shapiro laughed when he said he calls into sports talk radio stations as 'Josh from Juniata' and was all-in on the heavy inventory of major sports events headed to the state.
Among the events in 2026, Pennsylvania will host the baseball All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park, the World Cup at the Linc and the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club. The big year kicks off with the NFL draft in Pittsburgh next April.
'I worked my ass off to bring that to Pittsburgh, together with the Steelers,' Shapiro said. 'I'm excited for them.'

The Action Network: Great American Getaway 400 odds, picks, predictions
The NASCAR Cup Series is at the 'Tricky Triangle' this week for The Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway (2:00 p.m. ET, Prime Video). Pocono is a 2.5-mile, triangle-shaped track with three different radius corners, each with varying degrees of (relatively flat) banking, and three different straightaway lengths. In geometry class, we called that a scalene triangle, and with three differently priced manufacturers for this race, I'll be scaling that scalene definition to the betting world. Advertisement When we examine track history and practice times, one manufacturer stands out with a few undervalued drivers, so I'll take the lot of them for the win. Let's dive in and check out our Great American Getaway 400 odds, picks and predictions for Pocono. NASCAR at Pocono Best Bet As I do every race, I take a close look at my practice FLAGS metric to identify which drivers stand out and if there are any trends in the FLAGS data. As it turns out, there was a pretty clear trend right off the bat. Each of the top-four drivers in my group-adjusted FLAGS was piloting a Ford, with Ryan Blaney leading Chris Buescher, Austin Cindric, and Brad Keselowski until we reached the first non-Ford, William Byron. Advertisement The Blue Ovals also boast a relatively strong recent track history, with Blaney winning this race a year ago and setting the most fastest laps, while Buescher and Keselowski racked up the second- and fifth-most fastest laps. Ford as a whole took home 71 of the 117 (60.7%) fastest laps, including four of the top five drivers, with Josh Berry grabbing 13 fastest laps. In addition, Cindric claimed four fastest laps, so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that he ended up in the top four in FLAGS. Berry is also undervalued in my model, because there's no way to account for a car not completing any representative at-speed laps, with Berry having a diffuser issue costing him pace in practice and forcing him to miss qualifying. Even with Berry undervalued in my model, it still shows Ford having a 32.6% chance of winning this race, which translates to implied odds of +207. Advertisement If we bump Berry up a bit, this wager likely shows value at close to 2-to-1. However, as always, I like to leave some wiggle room for model error, so I'm comfortable with this down to around +220. FanDuel is offering this at +260, which is a healthy deviation from my model's number. Ford looked fantastic on the long run, so if you're tailing me on this, we're probably rooting for a healthy green flag run to end this race, rather than some late-race restarts where Chevy showed plenty of speed on the short run. The Bet: Ford Winning Manufacturer (+260, FanDuel | Bet to +220)

Chase Briscoe holds off Denny Hamlin to win at Pocono Raceway on fuel mileage
With sublime fuel conservation, Chase Briscoe held off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin to win at Pocono Raceway and lock into the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Briscoe made his final pit stop on Lap 119 of 160 and stretched the fuel tank of his No. 19 Toyota to a 0.682-second victory despite concern by crew chief James Small that the fuel fill was too short. It's the third career victory in NASCAR's premier series for Briscoe but his first since joining JGR this season. 'To finally deliver a win is just an awesome feeling,' Briscoe told Marty Snider on Prime. Hamlin, who pitted a lap later and stopped longer to have more fuel, finished second on the 2.5-mile track in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, followed by Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher and Chase Elliott. Joe Hunter Nemechek, Kyle Larson, Ryan Preece, Brad Keselowski and Austin Cindric rounded out the top 10 as the 400-mile race finished on a 30-lap run under green. It was a rough day for 23XI Racing, which occupied the last two places in the finishing order because of brake problems for Bubba Wallace (36th) and Riley Herbst (37th). Both drivers hit the wall after suffering tire problems related to the brakes. Wallace was able to drive his No. 23 Toyota to the garage and then made a brisk walk to the care center after exiting. His playoff hopes took a major hit after he entered Pocono just above the cutline with 10 races remaining in the regular season. Teammate Tyler Reddick also encountered mechanical problems before the end of Stage 2, falling three laps down and outside the top 30 for repairs. Stage 1 winner: Hamlin Stage 2 winner: Briscoe Next up: Saturday, June 28, 7 p.m. ET at Atlanta Motor Speedway on TNT. WILL BE UPDATED

Rams news: Tutu Atwell, Hawaii karaoke and other stories for Cardinals fans
A look at what has been going on with the Cardinals' NFC West rival Rams. We have made it through another week in the NFL offseason, and that means we will check in with the Arizona Cardinals' NFC West rivals. What is new with the LA Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks? Here are a few stories about the Rams from the last week that Cardinals fans should know. Tutu time? The Rams cut receiver Cooper Kupp and saw Demarcus Robinson leave in free agency. Former second-round draft pick Tutu Atwell now has the opportunity to take over as the Rams' No. 3 receiver. Head coach Sean McVay believes that Atwell is "ready to ascend." Rookie TE compared to Rams star The Rams drafted tight end Terrance Ferguson in the second round. He is the highest-drafted tight end by the Rams ever. He was compared to one of the Rams' greats from the past, Ernie Conwell. Rams concerned about LT Alaric Jackson The Rams re-signed Jackson but he has blood clots in his legs for the second time. This leaves the Rams with "some question marks" about whether he will be ready to play in September. They signed former Cardinals first-round pick D.J. Humphries soon after they learned of Jackson's condition. Karaoke in Hawaii The Rams held their minicamp in Maui last week. Apparently, they had a little fun, which included some karaoke singing. Stafford can move up all-time lists Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is 10th all-time in both career passing yards and career touchdown passes. By the end of 2025, he could move up three spots in passing yards and, with a special season, two in touchdown passes.
