NBA stars to turn filmmakers at summer league fest with Kevin Garnett, Mark Wahlberg and Deon Taylor

The NBA Summer League is giving athletes another shot that takes place behind the camera. With assists from Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett and Hollywood power players Mark Wahlberg and Deon Taylor, the league is bringing back the NBA Summer League Film Festival starting July 17 in Las Vegas.
The three-day festival will bring big-screen storytelling through 34 selected projects, spotlighting stories produced by NBA stars past and present including Nikola Jokic, Luguentz Dort, Tony Allen, Nate Robinson, Cole Anthony, Keyon Dooling and Udonis Haslem.
'We have a ton of NBA players who own production companies,' said Garnett, who won NBA championship with the Boston Celtics. He co-founded the production company Content King Studios.
"So the SLFF is a great opportunity to get together to share our projects, give each other our flowers for doing the work, and provide an opportunity to get projects financed and even sold,' Garnett said.
The second annual film festival will take place at the Strip View Pavilion inside the Thomas & Mack Center, the longtime home of NBA Summer League, which was co-founded in 2004 by Warren LeGarie and Albert Hall.
'I've always been a big hoops fan so it's amazing to see NBA players bring these incredible stories to life,' said Wahlberg, who has the production company Unrealistic Ideas.
Deon and Roxanne Avent Taylor of Hidden Empire Film Group were brought on to help athletes explore the art of filmmaking and sharpen their acting chops.
'Today's athletes are more than players. They're storytellers, creators, and global influencers," said Deon Taylor, director of 'Black and Blue,' 'The Intruder, 'Meet the Blacks' and 'Fatale.' This marks another sports-driven venture for Hidden Empire, which teamed up with Skydance Sports and the NFL in March to host film training sessions for more than 20 current and former NFL players.
Taylor called the collaboration with Garnett, Wahlberg, Hall and the NBA a "culture shift." He said the festival would help athletes to control their narrative through film, television and other media platforms.
'Together, we're redefining where sports, art, and culture collide,' Taylor said.
The festival will feature the premiere of 'UNLV: Kings of Vegas,' showcasing the untold story of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. The documentary will include interviews with popular figures ranging from Snoop Dogg, Chuck D and Jimmy Kimmel. It's produced by former UNLV stars Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon and Greg Anthony along with Damien Big Percy Roderick and Hidden Empire Film Group.
Along with screenings, the festival will host various private events including a tipoff viewing of 'Tony Allen: The Grindfather' and a wrap party.
'The SLFF team is passionate about amplifying these amazing films and filmmakers who are producing all forms of content at NBA Summer League,' Hall said. 'Because of all the talented filmmakers who submitted films this year, we believe the 2025 SLFF is poised to take on a life of its own and grow the second weekend of the Summer League.'

The Lakers will fittingly honor Riley against their long-time rival, the Boston Celtics. Riley coached the Lakers from from 1981 to 1990 during the team's "Showtime" era and won four NBA championships (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988). He led the Lakers through one of the most dynamic eras for any team in NBA history. With Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar leading an exciting roster with a groundbreaking fast-break offense, the Lakers went 533-194 (.733) in Riley's tenure and added 102 playoff victories over nine seasons. The Lakers won at least 50 games in each of his nine seasons as coach and they won at least 60 games in five straight seasons. He was named NBA Coach of the Year with the Lakers in 1989-90. He played for Los Angeles from 1970 to 1975, and was a team broadcaster before becoming Paul Westhead's assistant in 1979. Riley was part of the 1971=72 team that won a league-record 33 straight games and won the NBA championship. ADVERTISEMENT The 80-year-old Riley also coached the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat. He won another championship as coach with the Heat in 2006 and now serves as their team president. Just last season, the Heat named the court in their downtown arena after Riley in a ceremony attended by many of his former players. Riley will become the eighth Lakers luminary to be honored with a statue in Star Plaza, which has become a popular tourist attraction for fans of the globally popular franchise. OKC Thunder lead NBA in national TV games for 2025-26 regular season
This shouldn't be a surprise, but the Oklahoma City Thunder are in high demand. After the league dropped its 2025-26 regular season schedule, the NBA champions will be featured on the big stage pretty frequently. The Thunder will have 34 games on national television. That's tied with the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks for most appearances in the 2025-26 regular season. Not bad company to share with, as the other three are large market NBA mega-brands. It'll be a new broadcast era for the NBA. The league's national TV games will be aired on ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock and Amazon Prime. It's been quite the ascension for the Thunder. They had one of the greatest seasons ever. They capped off a historic 68-14 regular-season record by bringing home the Larry O'Brien trophy last year. After collecting the MVP and NBA Finals MVP trophies, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now a household name. He's one of the league's best players. Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren help round out arguably the best star trio. After all three signed contract extensions this offseason, expect the Thunder to remain in the national spotlight for a while. That type of success comes with notoriety. The NBA maxed out the number of national TV games in which the Thunder in. Even if they're a small market. After being left out of both days, OKC will be part of the Opening Night and Christmas slate. The Thunder will kick off the new NBA on NBC era on Oct. 21's Opening Night. As is tradition, they will unveil their championship banner and hand out their rings before they square off against the Houston Rockets and Kevin Durant.

The Timberwolves are set to be featured on national television 28 times. Only the world champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the flagship franchises of the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks have more nights on the national stage. All four have 34 national games. Edwards has taken big steps in each of his first five seasons, culminating last year with averages of 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and an NBA-leading 320 3-pointers made. He was named to the All-NBA second team, launched a signature shoe with Adidas that was one of the best sellers on the market, and has a dynamic game and personality that have made him a main attraction on social media and the talk shows that drive discussion about the league. And he just turned 24. As the league and its television partners look for the next star to promote as LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant enter their golden years, Edwards and the Timberwolves have shot right to the top of the list. The Trail Blazers are in rebuild mode but added Jrue Holiday to a team that was one of the best in the league on defense over the second half of last season. The Timberwolves have been known to start slow and take teams that are not among the favorites lightly, so this will be an important game to watch. 10/26: IND After opening the season with two on the road, the Wolves get a Sunday game at Target Center for their home debut. The Indiana Pacers would be considered a much tougher out with star Tyrese Haliburton, who is out for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon in the NBA Finals. But the Wolves know full well how dangerous a short-handed Pacers team can be. Obi Toppin looms large. Their sluggish starts to the season usually happen on the road. They have won nine straight home openers and 12 of the last 13. 11/26: @ OKC 12/19: vs. OKC 1/29: vs. OKC 3/15: @ OKC Even with the Western Conference expected to be incredibly competitive, the Thunder will be the heavy favorites. Everyone is back from their title-winning team. They are young and ready to roll. The Wolves have a bad taste in their mouths from how the Western Conference finals ended. After a narrow loss at home in Game 4 that could have evened the series, Minnesota went to Oklahoma City and laid down in Game 5. Winning in the regular season won't settle that score, but OKC is the measuring stick. All four games are nationally televised, showing the anticipation that is building for this matchup. 12/23: vs. NYK Karl-Anthony Towns will make his lone trip back to Minnesota just before Christmas. Last year he received a standing ovation in pregame introductions, then put up 34 points and 20 rebounds in a Knicks romp. He will have a new coach this year in Mike Brown, who replaces the fired Tom Thibodeau. Advertisement 2/9: vs. ATL Nickeil Alexander-Walker became a fan favorite during his time in Minnesota, blossoming from a fringe NBA player into one of the most valuable bench pieces in the league.
